Frankly, you just can't go wrong with any of the F-car engines. They are all intoxicating, though some in different ways. I hope to own one of each so I can savor each one!

There are horizontally opposed flat 12s
There are 180 degree flat V12s

There are not horizontally opposed flat V12s. It is a distinction that has to do with the way throws on the crankshaft are arranged. The V12s have two connecting rods on a throw (think Ferrari), the HO engines have a single conrod on each throw (think Porsche)

V-12 or V-8; If you're in love w/ both, just get one of each. How about carbureted vs. injected, 12's vs. 8's?? etc??

I love the V8 because its easier to find parts for. Besides 80% of the public thinks its a V12 anyhow until you open the hood.

Loved my 355s more than you can imagine, love my 550 more than you can imagine. They're very different cars, not better or worse, just different. Best plan is to have at least one of each!!

I hate to say it because I do love my 360, but the power of the 12 is intoxicating, Especially up front as in the Maranellos.

If I could have any Ferrari it would be a twelve, nothing wrong with the 8, but I think 12's are just a little more what Ferrari is. Right Frankie? Of course Frankie wants one of those Dino GTO's as listed in his profile.

The V8s are consistently faster around the track. The V12s cost more to maintain, and you get less performance. What am I missing?

And so would the V8s if they had 4.4 or 5 litres of displacement.

Even though I own an F355, a V12 spinning at 8000 RPMs still out 'sings' an 8 spinning at 8000 RPMs. Too bad Ferrari doesn't put 110 HP/liter tune on the V12s like they do on the V8's.

Dan, while that may be true for those models, in general, engine up front is a safer package for road cars.

The 12's have tons of torque, and you can't beat the sound of the 8's..

If you looking for top speed with less strain to the engine, I can assume the 12 is the way to go....

Sad safety remark here, but a front engine is much more dangerous in a frontal impact. The engine pushes back into the cabin and mangles your legs. As an example when tested the BMW Z3 vs the Boxster by the European NCAP tests, the Boxster was much safter in a frontal impact. On a rear engined car, the whole front is crumple zone.

But of course if you spin in a mid/rear engined car and go off the road backwards... having driven a 911 I know want a rear end slide feels like :-)

What would be cool, would be if ferrari were to make a smaller car again with a small displacement 12 cyl that of course revs it's a$$ off. That's what ferrari is missing. It doesn't have to go 200 mph, just be fun as hell, and outhandle everything. Something that when opened up full bore sounds like an indy car. That car would sell like mad. I guess it would be a modern day 250 gt.

8s are modern? 12s are smoother than 8s. 8s are easier to make. 12s are smoother to the touch.

This topic has been bashed to death on an earlier thread ... somebody hopefully has the time to find it :-) hehe.

12s are for those that want to dream about the glorious 250 series days ... GT, GTOs, LMs, Testarossa, etc. A huge part of Ferrari heritage.

v10s are for Schumacher wannabies ...

v8s are for those that are more into current performance and modern technology.

As for the 4s they are for the really, really wealth collectors and the v6s are somewhere in the middle (Engine heritage is impecable and looks and handling and oooooh!!!, how I would love to own one).

BTW Lampredi also built a twin that was going to replace the F1 500s (4 cylinders) that Ascari won 2 championships in ... but this was canned (probably by Enzo) ... Lampredi was getting way too excited about simplicity and torque. Lets face it the 500 4 cylinders were one of the most successful ever Ferraris so he was right on the money.

I have always liked having a big mass in front of me. Personal safely. Physics.

Smooth is a 6. 12 is much smoother.

If it came out of the factory at Maranello its a Ferrari in my opinion...Dino badges or not...Front end 12 or rear 12. 8 or 6.

As far as front to rear, just look at the styles of the decades. How many 50s/60s road cars had rear engines? In the 80s, it was popular among many exotics to have a rear mounted 12 (such as the boxer or TR). I dont think any is more Ferrari than the other, just different eras of design.

Ferrari made many cars: some with 4's, 6's, 8's, and 12's. 12's are pretty cool too.

What about rear engine vs. front engine? What do you think is better, or more ferrari, the front 12 or the rear 12?

Cant beat the sound of a nice 12. However, gas mileage hurts but then again who really cares about that. Its a Ferrari not a hybrid car. Most people say that 12s are a more traditional Ferrari engine (although they did race 4's and 8's in the 50s and 60s too) so you cant beat that heritage either.
