Stewart, a lot of people paid a hundred grand and more for a 308 in the height of the market in mid 1989. And then....the bubble burst ! |

Buy a GTS that they modified for the Magnum PI. show. The seat tracks were removed and the floor was cut out under the seat. That was the only way they could get Tom Selleck's ugly big head under the windscreen frame. He just sat in the car and smiled most of the time. Any spirited driving was done by a stunt driver. Tom could not get his feet around the pedals to do anything but cruise in and out of the driveway ! |

Thanks Sam, but at 6foot 3 you need the headroom to wear a helmet and sit in the car. I will likely have to build some top with a buble to get into that car. Ordered my seat already and the racing harness only need the car now...;-Q |

Thanks everyone for your input. The feeling seems to be either 1. Keep it if you do the work yourself or 2. Sell it and get a model in better condition. I am sincerely being pulled both ways. This is my first Ferrari and it will always have a special place in my heart. Prior to this I had a Jag**r E Type V12. While the Jag was fun there is nothing like this 308. Also, when others were taking the engine apart and jetting the carbs, I was the one that trouble shot the electrical system. What does that mean? Well if it involves the changing of the cam belts or the removal of the engine or some other kind of heavy duty engine work then I will not be doing it. I gave up when I tourqued the heads on the Jag to tight. Also, I do not own or have a friend that owns a paint shop so I will be paying full price for the paint job. So, I decided to pursue it this way: I will start looking to see what the current prices are for a 4 valve or another 2 valve in good condition. Remember I drive it so it does not have to be perfect. Also, I have a couple of body shops giving me estimates on the paint job. The engine work I will just budget at 10 Grand and be happy if it is less. So depending on the price, I may be able to sell it add a few bucks and get a Ferrari in better condition. The only downside is that I know the quirks in this one but I will have a learning curve with the new one. Thanks for everyones response and I will check back to see if there are any more! |

Not sure if this will help you or not. I paid about $21,000 for my '79 308GTB back in 1999 knowing that it needed a paint job and UNKNOWN engine condition (yes I was a dumb ass :-) Got it a new paint job - and engine work. As of now I have more than $50K in it - my car is worth maybe 30K?? And I am not done yet. I think I will be the first a-hole in Ferrari history to spend a hundred grand on a 308. What should I have done differently? Yes, spend the $50K and get a 328 with a nice paint. Hope that helps. |

Mitch; if you decide to sell your car let me know. I will actually be in Chicago for an extended weekend with my wife from the 14th to the 17th of September. I'd love to look at your car I am looking for a pure Track car, something where the engine gets the extra power and the rest will be stripped. Body parts will be painted for advertising purposes. Your car sound like it will be just the thing I would be looking at. It king of hurts me to buy a $20K car and then strip it and still have to do the engine. |

I agree with Peter. A lot of the fun in owning a ferrari is being able to do maintenance/repair yourself. Just straightened out the grille on my GTS. Spent 2 hours removing and replacing, then another hour staring at the car and admiring my work. I'd fix your "i" car and enjoy it. Any other car you might buy will also have something to fix as well. |

Tough question. They are indeed wonderful cars. However, I think you should keep it and let Nick breath on it mildly, and you would be floored with what he does with 2 valves. If you do want to sell it, please let me know. OK? Email me: [email protected] [email protected] -Mitchel |

With all your car needs there is no way you can repair it and come out ahead. I purchased my car in similar condition as yours and have spent over $20,000 on repairs not including my labor. I now have a $40,000 car worth $30,000 at best. Sell it and purchase another. |

I bought my car knowing it would need tons of work done to it. Thank goodness I got it cheap enough. I figured, even all of the money I put into it, but by doing all the work MYSELF, I'm still coming out ahead of the game. Not that I would sell it, damn, I've gone this far to make it perfect, I'm going to enjoy it. Plus, there is my pride and satisfaction that I did all of this. But that's just me. Ever since I was a little kid, no matter what I had, I always took it apart and put it back together. Back then, model cars, right now, real cars. As much as I had fun driving it last year, I'm still having fun working on it. All depends if you have the time and skills to do this. If you can, go for it. Its hard to describe the feeling you get when you step back and look at the hard work you did and it looks awesome. |

I would put it on ebay with an honest description of it and sell it for the highest possible price and then buy another one with the help from one of our experts. That will save you a lot of headache. |

OK, I have a question for everyone. I own a 1980 308GTSi red/tan 41K. This car is a true driver. Because I changed jobs it has essentially sat in the garage for 3 years (oil changed and started regularly). I bought this car as the second owner in 1988 and have loved it ever since. Here is my dilema: 1. Do I have the work done to get it back into "running condition" or 2. Do I purchase another. The work that is needed is as follows: Non working passenger window Front bumper has deep scratch in the rubber Door sills are showing paint bubbles and the fenders have the usual rock marks(may need full paint job) Engine tune up (may be time for the major work but I have replaced the belts twice) Fuel system needs cleaning maybe a few injectors Fast idle switch needs replacing Oil pressure is a little low after warm up (I can hear those valves a ticking) Interior is in OK condition (This is a driver) This is a great and reliable car. No cats/Ansa exhaust. Never been hit. No EGR. New tires. I live in Chicago and would love to find someplace other than Continental Motors (installed the clutch wrong) or Lake Forest Sportscar (Did not charge the AC correctly) to work on my car. I figure for the paint job and engine work I will probably spend about $15,000-$20,000 but maybe I am to high on my estimates. From what I see of prices, I could get a lower mileage well documented 308 or toss a little more and get a 308QV and not spend the money to fix up the current 308. I like the 308's. So my questions: 1. Should I fix it? 2. Should I buy another? 3. Know of a good paint shop in the Chicago area? 4. Know of a good mechanic in the Chicago area? or 5. Throw caution to the wind and send my car to Nick Scianna and have it redone from top to bottom(just joking and probably cost prohibitive). Your thoughts would be appreciated. I am sure there are others at this point. What do you think? |
