In 1996, certain significant improvements have been made to the 456. 456s produced after that year are generally thought to be reliable and silky smooth. At least, this has been my experience.

And then came the 456M, which of course introduced even further improvements that were sufficient enough to earn the use of the additional letter "M" - meaning "modification".

456 prices have already dropped considerably, I think its easy to find 1 under $100k. Once 460s are plentiful they will likely drop some more

I am also considering buying a preowned 456. I think the prices will drop with the introduction of th 460. I am just trying to decide what year to buy. Anyone know of a good source on the diferences between the different year 456. How has the car changed since its introduction.

Taek-Ho Kwon,
Be careful with your decision to wait.. In comparing the 355 and 360 situation, keep in mind that the prices of the 355 with the paddle shifters are what went up.. Those that couldn't wait to experience the 360's due to the waiting list is what drove those prices up..

This is clearly not the situation with the 456 and the 460.. I do see that the 456 prices have dropped.. I don't think it will make a big change in price when the 460 is introduced.

For my part, I would look around to see what is the current trend.

Why is Bentley coming out with the Continental GT?

What is Rolls Royce's answer?

Why is Aston Martin introducing its new model?

Why is Mercedes producing the AMG SL55, E55, etc?

Look at Audi, what are its plans?

Porsche is even pushing out the Cayenne.

The trend? High-performance machines, but with luxury, grace, prestige and usability to match. There is a niche market for it. The top manufacturers are gunning for it, too.

When the trend becomes the norm, what will it do to the prices of 456? Will it increase demand to push prices up, or will it increase supply to drive prices down?

Now that is the question.

And while I'm on the subject, I rather suspect that the difference between the 456 and the 460 will mirror that between the 355 and 360; the 460 will look more modern, have better ergonomics, dynamics and an updated interior. It will also have lost its sheer prettiness and a lot of its character in the process. There will be those who will prefer the more modern car and those who don't. I will take a look at the 460, but not until it's at least a year old, since one aspect that will remain is massive depreciation in the first 12-18 months.

Hmmm. I'm with Noel. If a model hasn't finished depreciating, the logical answer is ALWAYS to wait. However, if you want something reasonably modern and follow this to its logical conclusion, you will be forever waiting. You just don't know what's round the corner. I work on a 1 yr horizon, in that if it's going to suit my lifestyle for a year I'll do it. At the end of that time, you make the choice to keep, trade or sell.

I'm looking at F355s at the moment, and I'd be better off pricewise if I bought in Winter. Stuff that.

I'm not concerned about the renovations because she already got that going. We have a "car reserve fund" in a separate bank account. I just want to buy as much as possible with as little as possible obviously.

I think I'll probably hold off. Especially since it looks like the 456 that is worth the money is a 456M which are the later models anyway.

Cheers

Though it may not be old enough to be a 'classic' yet, the 456 will surely one day be considered a benchmark Ferrari.

However, I don't think it'll happen for at least a decade, the car is still "too new" to really be appricated.

Much as I support buying it if you at all can now, prices are likely to drop I would guess.

PS: forget about it after you have kids, better act now! :-)

Best!
Ben.

If you are single, all I can say is buy,
buy, buy. Just wait until she wants to
renovate a perfectly good house. Women
love to change things. Do not delay.

I say wait, cause if you look at the prices of 355's now they are coming down. I have seen some high milage 456's in the high $80K's, but not many.

"get what you want, when you want it." :-)

Noel, unfortunately my what you want list is very long and I'm thinking of starting a family within the next year or so if all goes well.

Kids are expensive, so a lot of my play money has been redirected to their financial security, even though they're not even born yet. Every penny counts!

Long story short, I can't afford it.

I would think that in a value vs. time chart it's almost always better to wait. but ferrari's are not always the most sensible purchase anyway..who cares, if you can afford it, get what you want, when you want it.

If I want to be economical and wait for my 456 purchase, should I purchase soon or wait for the 460 to come out and start selling.

I read in a thread sometime ago that 355 prices went up when the 360 came out. But then again that was because of the short supply of 360. In comparison I don't think 460s will have that sort of supply/demand situation. Will the 456 prices become depressed then?

I would not consider a 460 yet because from the spy shots I've seen they are simply not nearly as good looking as the current 456.
