I will look at the yellow Spyder tomorrow, although I really don't want a yellow car.

TomD,

Transfer of the title is tricky. You can't claim ownership easily without both title and car. Unless you know(or get to know) the person very well and trust them, you need to take measures to protect yourself. You will always want to view the title before buying to look for liens but even that's not foolproof.

No deposit without seeing the car.

I will not give a deposit before I can
look at the car. The only reason to
give a deposit IMHO is if the seller is
well known throughout the particular
auto community and the car is going to
move immediately ( ie... a very rare
desirable collector auto ). Well I
unfortunately am not in the market
for a car like that. Wife does not
want to live in a trailor with a big
TV four children with a very expensive
car.

I cannot imagine doing that when purchasing
from a private seller. I can maybe
understand a deposit with a dealer.
Most dealers (not all) will probably not be
happy to give your deposit back either.

But just shooting a few thousand to hold
a car with a private seller is probably
not wise. You may sit awhile before
you get your deposit returned or worse.
Of course every story is different.

I told the two sellers that I would be
looking at the car within four/five days
after we agreed on the price. I did not
ask them to hold the car for two weeks
or the like. I know some buyers are
comfortable buying cars without looking
at them. There is also a difference
between buying a car without looking it
over from a dealer/broker/friend you trust
vs ebay.

not sure I would go for that color combo :-) BTW, I notice he requires a check before title is sent, does everyone do this? When I got my car the owner sent the title (kept possesion of car) and then I sent the check. Once he got the check then the car was shipped

You could always go for this one if you like that yellow/red combo:

Because I didn,t give a deposit on the first car, I offered to send a deposit out today for the second car. The seller accepted a higher offer (although I don't think a deposit has been given). We didn't agree on price until last night... I'll just keep trying...

Buying a car like this is not always fun.

I had a guy "accept" my offer only to be
told two days later that someone else
is going to give the asking price; if
they decide to purchase. I can wait in
line now or purchase now for 3K more !

Another one told me to fly out to S.D.,
Cali and arrange for a P.P.I. with F of
S.D. I arranged everything and told
him I would be there within four days
after we agreed on the price. I called
back the next day after working on
everything ( airline, rental car, P.P.I.,
car carrier, insurance etc... ) ~ Oh I
was ""going"" to call you back - The car
is already sold !@

Don't let it get you down. Hang in there.
Your perfect car that you want is out there.

for starters, look at the 23 or so berlinettas shown in the car experience website. And, look at FML. Then, start using the phone, getting info, etc. In a couple days, you should know of every 355 in the US (oh, yeah, Hemmings, too which you can also access on line). Buying from an authorized dealer will usually cost more, but you'll get more coverage if something goes wrong.

For the second time in two weeks, after striking a deal on a car, I have just found out that the seller has accepted another offer. It seems like this just isn't meant to be..... I am looking for a 95 or 96 355, preferably a Berlinetta. Quality and service history are very important to me. Please send any ideas or leads you have my way...

Thanks,

Scott
