The point about each make of helmet being shaped differently is a good one. For years I had Shoei helmets for the Ducatis and whatnot and then one got totalled in an accident (did its job!). The insurance guy said I needn't get the same helmet as a replacement so I went to the shop and tried on a bunch and found that in reality, I didn't have a "Shoei head". I had an "Arai head"! I'll never go back. This may be less critical for wearing in a hard-top car but in a convertible or race car I'm sure the wind acts on you similarly to on a motorcycle and fit becomes very important. So does the weight of the helmet. The lighter they are, the more they tend to cost but our brains are worth it. Lots of options for venting, and some have removable liners for washing and some don't or are difficult to remove. |

Yes: William Countachxx is 100% correct. If all the "plain" foot soldiers / Storm Troopers (cannon fodder) for laser beams drive Ferrari's than the VIP officials from the dark side have to be seen in something else ie.... The Emperor and Darth Vader ( William Countachxx implied this when he suggested driving as "Darth" to a Star Trek convention ~ not me ) must drive Black Lamborghini's. Can't drive the same thing as the foot soldiers. And one more thing. I can prove this to you. All the big wigs ride in big ships in Star Wars. Remember the Super Star Destroyer that costed hundreds of billions of dollars for the interstellar tax payers? Hey if you are in charge of a big ship you have to have some super sexy fast wheels when you got your hot girl next to you. And NO a modified Supra will not cut it with a hot girl that knows her cars. So cool. Ralph Ralph |

While I have a Simpson Super Shark for racing, and use it for tracking the 355, I think an open face is better suited for FCA track events. One, they allow a greater field of view. Two, they allow easier conversation with a passenger or instructor. Three, they will not feel so claustrophobic. Four, in a car with a windshield there is no need for a face shield; in fact, it may impede your vision. Its especially important with novice track drivers to feel comfortable so you can fully focus your concentration outside of the cockpit. The last thing you need is to be concerned about your helmet while driving.

Go to a retail shop, and try on helmets. Settle for nothing less than full-face SA2000 rating (if the shop is at a track, that should be all they carry.) MOST IMPORTANT THING is to find a helmet that fits you!!! If you get a headache 5minuites into every session, racing won't be muhc fun. Helmet fit is a very personal thing, thus there is no replacement for trying them on in a store repeatedly. Best! Ben.

Crawford et al., What do you think about the Ferrari Challenge helmet of Bieffe? Is it really worth around 370 with shipping although it is "only" an open face helmet? It is offered at the Ferrari Owners Site and officially used by most pilots of the Ferrari 360 Challenge. It meets FIA standards as well but seems pretty expensive (as all items on the Owners Site) to me. On the other hand I definitely have no clue about prices, standards etc... Con saluti cordialissimi, Jens Haller |

Crawford -- welcome back to the Ferrari fold! It's been too long. I've got a Bell M3 (full face) and a Bell Mag 4 (open face). Love them both. The open face is fine in the 308/328 even with the targa off. RacerWholesale.com is having a sale on full face GForce helmets SA2000 for just $189. Great deal if they fit you. When do you get the car? We'll have to get together for a summer drive some Saturday. Check out the regional website at www.fca-se.com or the Alabama website at www.fca-se.org. At the Alabama site, you can also see the custom paint job I put on my helmet (link at bottom of the main page). Mike |

Yea the Golden Years Star Trek is the best. Auxillary Power will always get you out of any problems. You know that in the 23rd Century Capt Kirk is going to have a hot girlfriend and a hot Italian Exotic Car in Iowa. Ralph |

Dr.Strangelove, that picture is a classic! I love early star trek as well. For the next star wars movie, you gotta drive to the theatre and camp out with your ferrari in that helmet |

Also a good way to not let gawkers bother you. That is better than wearing safety glasses with side shields. I am going to the store tomorrow. Ralph |

I was just having fun. I LOVE Star Trek # 1 ( especially golden years ) and Star Wars. Try posing the helmut in a white Lamborghini Countach. The track-wanna-be Ferrari boys are going to love that one. & please don't start a 400+ thread on that one. I am not the best comic but no negative comments please. Ralph |

I wonder what would go through someone's mind when he/she sees a storm trooper driving a F-car. My first thought would be 'Holy cr*p, a storm trooper got more royalties than Mark Hamill'. Priceless picture. |

Whart be very wary of wearing a bike helmet in a car. They are actually quite different. Bike helmets are designed to take one blow and literally break to pieces in the inside. Bike helmets are not safe for car tracking. Get yourself a helmet specific for cars. Protect that noggin' of yours. |

I know that different manufacturer helmets tend to "fit" differently, size notwithstanding. I really, truly hate the SHOEI (sp?) helmet i bought for the car; it fits right, its pretty tight, but it is heavy, claustrophic, etc. I could never get used to it. On the other hand, my Arai rx 7 whatever, for the bike, is supremely comfortable, got used to it immediately, its lite, i can breath in the thing, etc. Now, is it just that i bought a better quality bike helmet than a car helmet (the Sho cost close to 400, the Arai was more), or is this simply a function of the different nature of the helmets, fireproofing in the car helmet, etc.? |

Helmet: most important thing--fit! It must fit on your head, snuggly without any chance of coming off or rotating. The strap must be able to hold said helmet on your head wihtout pinching off you neck. Every head is different size/shape. Some helmet brands fit some head shapes, other brands other shapes. Do not buy a used helmet. Do not buy your first helmet through the 'mail'. Second most important thing: Specifications: most run groups require at least M95 that is a motorcycle helmet to Snell Certification standard 1995. If you get 'interested' you should spring for a SA00 helmet. SA means special application (i.e. car racing) 2000 standard. Motorcycle helmets are designed for one big bonk, and long periods of scraping followed by another lesser bonk. SA helmets are designed to withstance having your noggin bounce off various interior components several times, and protect you from flying debris, and are fire resistant. Face shield is thicker. The technology is similar, but the execution is different. {{I wear a motorcycle helmet on my bike, and a SA helmet in the F355}}

Getting a Yellow '86 328GTS, so maybe a closed face helmet would be the ticket... |

Crawford, congrats! I am trying to get my wife to come with me to a track event, to see if she would like it! Yes, that sort of helmet sounds just fine. Are you getting a closed-roof car? If so, go with open face helmets--you'll be MUCH cooler. But if the car is a convertible, then get closed face helmets. What kind of car are you getting, by the way?

Music to my ears :-) I've tracked cars before but am no Emerson Andretti... my wife Laney has owned several muscle cars (including a Shelby Mustang) but has never raced (on a track). What should a couple of no-vice novices be looking for in the way of headgear? It would be for the occasional track event and/or driving school. Would a $250 Bell (SA 00) be good enough? |
