I owned a 95 M3, it was a great car. I presently do not own a BMW but a new 525 is on order. With regards to M3 vs Ferrari check out the July 01' issue of the Roundel which has the BMW car club magazine. Its titled Hudson valley Showdown, new e36 M3,vs 360 modena, new 911, and the AMG CLK 55. To make a long story short check out this link:

ChristianK, I'm not sure what Ferrari site you're on, but FerrariChat.com gets more users, more postings, and more hits every week vs. the last. I might not comment on the quality of some of these bickerings, I mean postings. ;)

Guy's we need to relax a bit. When I drive my TR or my ML430 to BMW NA, I get little jabs, but we are all car nuts. The reason there is Coke and Pepsi, Mickey D's and BK is because people have diffrent likes and dislikes. The M3 is a great car, fast, and a reasonable price / HP ratio. Many people think that our loved Prancing Horses are mechanicly crap vs. a Porsche, but we love them.

We need to be more supportive of our Ferrari brothers / sisters regardless if they have a GT4 or a 550, or drive a MB or F150 as there primary car. We all have our reasons for what we drive or where we live, so let's keep the good comments in, and the not so nice out.

Martin, as most others have stated...congrats on your new purchase and enjoy in good health! Part of the beauty of exotic cars is that they are often times as unique as their owners and although they may not appeal to everyone, the true enthusiast will respect and appreciate another's choice - even if it's different from their own. Cheers!

I know nobody asked....but I thought that's what "chat" as all about!

I will attack anybody anywhere if I get a personal comment to my postings. If you think that's funny to do that than you are at the same stage as a school kind bullying another. Bullying does not have anyhting to do with fun, if you think so than you haven't learned the lessons of life. There is too much bullying here at ferrarichat and that's why it's getting less and less postings.
Just my 2 cents.

Aren't we just a little bit tooooooo sensitive? I don't think my comment about "sour grapes" warrants an attack on my children, grandchildren or my mental health!!
Time I believe for you to examine your over-reaction.
End of discussion from my end.Remember a sense of humor gets one thru life more smoothly.

Trust me guys, the E46 M3 will be retailing for $35k plus in three years.

I was actually cheating on my BMW with the Ferrari, but was glad to hear that the Ferrari doesn't mind me driving around with others. The Ferrari is too intense for me more than a couple days a week. It's great to have such an understanding red head.

ChristianK, maybe you'll be in a better mood today, I think you would of even taken a compliment wrong yesterday. I do think the high prices of the E36 M3 around 1999-2000 were a combination of the economy and the new E46 not being out yet. However, I'll take bets now that the retail price of the E46 M3 will be more than $30k after 3 years. My point about HP was... you're getting more car for relatively the same amount of money. The US version of the E36 M3 only had about 240 hp and competed with a different class of cars than it does now at 330 hp, but for only a little more money.

Also, I agree about the Euro market being a completely different animal. Where else can you get 348's in the 30's and 355's in the 70's?
Martin (Miami348ts)

Rob, I am sorry but your estimate has to be totally off. It really does not matter what HP these cars have to make a resale value. BMW has and will suffer from decrease in value. Look at my 840. The car is great, fast, 300HP, technically as advanced as any car for the early 90s and yet this $80K new machine I can not get rid of for $25 or find somebody that will offer less for that matter.
20-25% loss in the first 3 years is wishfull thinking on any car for that matter, even a Ferrari. The 360 will lose that in the first 3 years.
Now the TR holding value within the 3 years is likely not to happen as well. Depending on the model year.Yours looks like a 87-88 which will likely hold value within 5-10%. Definetely the better deal, I agree.

Hey, if there are no guys buying the cars new, we will not be able to pick them up a few years from now for considerable less and laugh all the way to the Bank, right?

No need for stupid comments. Martin, if you have the need spending all your money on stupid cars (that's what you mentioned in an earlier post), then you have either a health (mental) problem or you are just the loneliest guy in the world (without kids and grandchildren). Don't get personal with me - following Herberts footsteps. I never said that the M3 is a bad car, I have probably owned more BMW than most of you guys incl. 750, 850, 635, 325, 328, M3 (96 Euro) and right now I have a 99 540i. Rob, residual value does not have anything to do with HP, maybe the guys in the US pay that kind of money but in Germany and Canada that's what it is. USD 52 K new and USD 42 K after 3 years???? A new M3 goes for about 50 grand, CPI shows about 30 grand (retail - wholesale is maybe 25 = 50 % as mentioned) for a 1998 M3 Coupe in good conditon (3 years, right?). Rob, don't get confused about .net pricing one year ago - the world was different then. Right now consumer spending and confidence in the US is decreasing, I sure would not be that optimistic about the future (economy wise) in the USA.
Always open for friendly comments,
Christian

ChristianK, the E36 M3's held their value better than that. For a year between when they stopped making new ones and the E46 hadn't come out yet, they were actually selling for more than orginally new. With the E46 out now, the E36's have really come down in price. I would think a new M3 will run $52k with everything and then you could sell it for about $43-45k in 3 years. Remember, this new one isn't the tamed down 230 hp one like the last. This new one rockets 5 people decked out in leather luxury with navagational computer to 60 miles an hour in under 5 seconds.

OK, maybe the new M3 is a fantastic car but they ain't cheap. All prices in CAD. Cost new about CAD 80 K. Maintenance costs in 3 years= 0. Residual value in 3 years= CAD 40 to 45. Cost per year= CAD 8,500 to 10,000. MY TR is cheaper! Maintenance cost in 3 years per year about CAD 3,000 to 5,000 (incl. timing belts at the dealer. Value today = value in 3 years.

Congratulations....definitely one of my favorite autmobiles. Do you plan on doing any upgrades to the car. This is what my M3 may look like in the future: http://www.supercars.net/SDBQ?y=2001&m=BMW%20AC%20Schnitzer&o=E46%20S3%20Sport Oh well, wishful thinking. Will probably order one for myself next year...if this stupid economy would pick itself back up. BTW - anyone need an unemployed computer programmer (Lotus Notes) :-)

Congrat's Martin;

BMW North America is my current client and the garage is just packed with the new M3's. They are just fantastic to look at and drive. I had a few miles on the Garden State Pkwy that one of the guy's gave me a run for my money with his M3 vs. my TR. I am waiting to drive the new Z8 that's been parked in the garage, but that may take abit of convincing.

Oh, I'm sorry, I've been a little out of the BMW loop. I heard a little about that at the American Le Mans here in Dallas when we met one of the drivers and the American M brand manager.

Rob,

I was referring to the SMGII (Sequential "M" Gearbox, second generation) version which began production in August. Here's more info: http://www.bmw.com/bmwe/products/special/ . Click on the red SMGII icon.

The E46 M3's have been around many months now, you mean the hundreds that have been delivered in America were not USA versions? They've been delivered at US dealers.
Viken Bedrossian (Vikenb)
Posted on Wednesday, August 29, 2001 - 6:00 pm:

Congrats, Martin. That wouldn't be an SMGII version now would it? The US versions were only to go in production this month.

Please do tell your experiences once you put some miles on the M3.

congrats, BMW is my daily driver, I've been tempted to trade up to the E46 M3, but I don't know how my Ferrari would react to a faster car in the garage. kinda like bringing home to your wife a better looking girlfriend... dang, I forgot, Jennie has been monitoring my posts on here.

Am I allowed on the Ferrari chat to announce the delivery of my 01 M3 red/black?
After perhaps 30-40 new car purchases I still got excited as can be driving away from the BMW showroom!
