Hey everyone, I had the same problem with my 84 308 QV. I thought the car was overheating, then all of a sudden the gauge needle would drop a whole hash mark on the gauge!? I think it has something to do with a bad sending unit, or a bad sending cable? Does it have a cable that can go bad?? Anyway, I went through the entire cooling system, and the gauge still reads high sometimes. I am running water wetter. Mainly the car runs at 180F all the time now. When I am in traffic, it slowly moves up. I watch the darn temp gauge more than the speedo!! |

Gauges can fail, but not as much as sending units can. Veglia/Borletti gauges are very expensive. Sending units are cheap. If you change to a different manufacturer gauge, replace the sending unit as well (they'll more than likely use different resistance values for operating the gauge). |

I have an 82 euro 308 gtbi, I too have the same problem with the guage...I did a post several weeks ago...I thought it was running hot...kept checking the radiator for temp, the engine and the overflow...I tapped on the guage and it dropped back to 90c......The water wetter is a wonderful product...it dropped my temp to around 80-85c in just a few miles of usage. It is manufactured by Redline and can be purchased at around 7.95 a bottle from about any speedshop.(drag cars use it) I would say to buy 2 bottles and use a bottle and a half...do not overfill tank and leave the proper airspace..it will mix well with coolant unlike some other coolant additives. I have been told on the temp guage to clean the terminals behind the guage because they get dirty, I plan to replace the guage with a VDO in the farenheit scale anyways...it is a close match for around 40.00 versus the 180. price tag of the factory....... |

I have used water wetter and if you hit the Redline web page they will list any dealers in your area. Im not sure if it works that much better than good mix of water/antifreeze. To get the best results they say use 40% antifreeze/water then add one bottle of the substance. Ideally they recom water and 1 bottle of water wetter to get the best results. Overall it probably does have some effect but we tend not to see that temp difference in an analog gauge. If you run at 220 normally with a 50-50 mix adding the product should make it 212. Not too sure on your temp reading prob. Check the usual connections and grounds for your instrument panel. |

I was driving my 1985 308 QV Euro in stop and go traffic yesterday and my water temp gauge was almost maxed at 205(euro) when I finaly made it to the freeway, the temp suddenly came down to the mid 90's. When I tapped on the gauge it went up to 205, tapped again and mid 90's where it stayed. The car was running like a top. Is this a problem anyone has seen before? Also, I have read posts about water wetter. Is this a good product and if so, where can I obtain? Thanks Mike |
