Eli, great question. i know everyone that owns a 360(including myself), wants to hear that there is a tremendous difference, but in my mind there is not. the 360 "double clutches" when you down shift, that's about it. the 355 felt more durable, ie..when you hit the gas on the 360 on an uphill, you fry the clutch plate. when you punch it from a dead stop, you fry the clutch plate. also, where you have the PIS set effects it a lot. I have mine at 4.3, which is very tight. the 355 was more predictable and a lot less fickle....easier. i think that the 99-01 clutch/ECU system is crap, and i have 6000 reasons($), to back that up. also, my buddy has the same car in a US version. same problems(his were worse), and his top won't close. |

Noel, do you feel a big difference in between the 355 and the 360 F1 gear box and how so? |

Noel If you leave your car in the garage this issue really doesn't come up... |

Noel, Glad to hear the car is back to normal...BTW, I didn't realise the ECU was only $1300, that's a pretty worthwhile upgrade. Jason |

Though not exactly the same, my '02 Maser wasn't driving smoothly with its Cambiocorsa as I thought it should. They adjusted the PIS, and now it drives great. To bad this isn't a driver adjustable feature, b/c you could tune it to your exact preference (more slip is apparently smoother, less slip is better for the clutch). |

This is a follow up post to other posts of the many of us that have had problems with our clutches. If you have and F1 clutch you probably alreay know all(most)of this. Intially my F1 started going into neutral on it's own on an up shift. With time it got more frequent. I took it to the dealer and spent the lion's portion of $5k, to replace the clutch, throw out barring, corona ring(from 3 prong to six), and some other related stuff. I picked up the car and almost immediately I noticed that all was NOT well. The car reved too high before engaging the the clutch(there was too much slip), and I could smell the clutch burning. It turns out that the PIS(point of intial slip)is set by the ECU(electronic control unit), and in the version 1 of the ECU(for 1999 to 2001), it sets automatically. The ECU had the PIS set at 5.8(the highest/most slip). The version 1 ECU cannot be set manually, it's only self setting, so it couldn't be fixed and I was set to fry another clutch. Solution: The new, version 2 ECU($1300)that is OEM on 2002 models and newer). Now the clutch can be set anywhere between 4.0 and 5.8, I set mine at 4.3. the difference is tremendous and very noticeable. The other advantage of the V2 ECU is that as the clutch normally wears, you can set it to tighten up if you like...basically, it's way better. So in summary; if your 99 to 01 clutch blows up, you need a new clutch and maybe and new ECU(and possibly fly wheel). Also, I'd like to thank fellow F-chatter Jason Fraser, who was very helpful with giving me advise on what to do. He is very knowledgeable, and cool....thanks dude |
