Yes, it's called Mach Go! Go! Go! in Japan. The hero's name was originally Go and was changed to Speed Racer in the US. That replicar looks seriously bad ass! What's under the hood? A V-12? Looks very authentic. Does it have the front buzz saws and the jump springs? |

Mach Go Go Go was the original name of the show if I'm not mistaken. From what I've read, the Mach 5 is based on the designs of Bertone which looks more like a Lamborghini style to me. just my .02 yen There is a DJ in Dallas (Russ Martin) that owns a Mach 5. How cool is that? It's based on a vette chassis with a fiberglass body kit. Go figure.

Yes indeed, I think the Mach 5 (Makku Go in Japanese) was heavily inspired by the 1958 250 TR. Even the storyline seems to refer to that period, with road races and rallies and the racing attire worn and used by the characters. A classic Japanese animation (forget about the '90s sequel). There's a Japanese racing team in the Japan GT Championship (JGTC) that uses the Mach 5 colors as their racing livery, I believe it's one of the GT300 cars. Check out the pics at www.jgtc.net. (It's not a Ferrari BTW).

Just bought the Special Edition Speed Racer DVD with the first 11 episodes. The cover even has "rubber tire" look to it! The Mach 5 looks like a modified '58 Testa Rossa. Do you think the TR inspired them? I remember watching Speed Racer as a kid. Great racing!! |
