Dale - I have regular AAA towing and they will send a flat bed at no additional charge if you request it. They are good about it and don't want to damage your car. Did so twice with the P-Car.

Doody - Excellent point about the canister...I was surprised when I got my 355 that it had a 18 month shelf life. Reg canister from Pep Boys fits perfectly into stock holder in tool kit.

DALE:

interesting - of course there's one of those little compressor thingies. i don't have one of those, which basically renders my can of fix-a-flat 100% useless, huh? :-)

i don't know about the AAA thing re: flatbeds, but unless you're in eastpalookaville, one of their contract shops must have a flatbed. certainly nobody at AAA wants your car totalled being towed - that's not in their best interest. maybe they might charge a tad extra - whatever.

CHRIS:

stop yelling, dude :-).

i have not actually taken one of my wheels off and stuffed it into the boot. however, what i did do was measure it all carefully with a measuring tape just before i took those photos this afternoon (due to the comment made about there being no place to put the busted tire in the 3XX in question). i see no logical reason why you wouldn't be able to get one of the rear wheels into the trunk - because of the subtantially-sized well that the spare and the jack kit and fix-a-flat are in. it's possible that the wheel wouldn't fit fully-inflated, but once the tire was deflated (why else would you be putting the spare on?) i don't see any reason why it wouldn't fit.

though as much of a sport as i am, i'm not going to test it out for the board ;)

DOODY, HAVE YOU ACTUALLY TRIED TO PUT A FULL SIZE WHEEL AND TIRE FROM A MARANELLO INTO THE TRUNK? I WAS VERY MUCH UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT IT DID NOT FIT

WHILE HAVING A SPARE TIRE IN YOUR 550 MARANELLO MAY SEEM NICE, I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHERE ONE IS TO PUT THE DAMAGED WHEEL AND TIRE SINCE IT DOES NOT FIT INTO THE TRUNK SPACE, AND WHO IS REALLY GOING TO THROW IT ON THE PASS. SEAT, OR REAR SHELF?

Wow, Mr. Doody, thanks much. All my car has is the fix-a-flat stuff and, I think, an air pump. (The car is still at FOH getting the leather dash redone so I can't look.)If the optional kit includes all this stuff, then maybe the price isn't so bad.

Also, it has been a long time since I used AAA. Can you specify that only a flatbed can be used to haul your car? I ain't gonna let Bubba hook up my Ferrari to his tow truck. No how, no way.

here's the actual front-side of the tire out of the car:
Upload

the stock mounted, fully-inflated rear car tire is about 27" in diameter. this temporary tire is just over 24" inflated. it looks like a rear, stock, fully-inflated tire and wheel will fit in the trunk of the 550 - and presumably you wouldn't be putting it in there if it were fully inflated --- it'll absolutely fit deflated.

it's a 125/80R17:

here's the jack kit - do cars without the spare tire option come with this - or do they just come with the fix-a-flat and toolkit?
Upload

remember that the fix-a-flat has a shelf life of < 18 months. open yours up and check it - the canister probably has a clearly marked expiration date. no clue how accurate that is, but i'm guessing a can of fix-a-flat at the local auto store don't cost that much - worth replacing regularly.

let's just end the speculation :-).

here's a nice empty trunk:

here's the tire cover removed:

that's the tool kit "inside" the wheel.

here's the bird's eye view:

that's the can of fix-a-flat, which is sitting on top of the jack kit (cf.).

If it is anything like the 360 the optional spare is a "dummy" spare and the damaged wheel/tire will not fit in the trunk.

my 550 was ordered with the spare. it doesn't just slap in there - it's a different trunk bottom decking as best i can tell. the tools are setup to fit in the wheel under the wheel cover.

i don't expect it's ever been used, and i don't expect i'll ever use it either. as far as i'm concerned AAA and fix-a-flat are the shiznit and this thing is just a waste of space in my trunk :-)

I think that the Factory spare is one of those "space saver" tires. There is a space for it in the middle of the "trunk," which means not much. thx

If it is meant for temp use then do you need a wheel that matches? Why not buy an cheap aftermarket wheel with a narrow width to fit front or rear? Is there a compartment for the wheel when not in use?

Dale, get one off of ebay and save a ton over what the dealer wants.

Actually, my concern is more for sidewall damage via a rock. Fix-a-flat works fine for slow leaks. According to FOH, Ferrari will not recommend run flat tires (maybe cause the sidewalls are too tough?). Our back roads in Texas tend to be somewhat funky. Thus, the concern. thx

it will be front width, and if you have to put it on the back, its only intended to get you to a 'licensed ferrari dealer/workshop' anyway......the can of flat fixer does essentially the same thing unless you plan to go to the sahara (its been done with a 512m).

Hmmm, don't know. It's whatever Ferrari sells so I assume that it works on either front or back. I'll have to check. thx

Hopefully, I will be picking up my 1998-550 on Saturday. I'm thinking about ordering the optional spare wheel. I like to drive in offbeat and out of the way places, and the idea of not having any spare makes me nervous. What do you think? Is it worth it ($1,500 from the dealer) or should I just get over it. Anybody have an idea where I can get a used one? thx
