Ross
If you are a serious buyer a serious seller will allow you to test drive almost anything. I'm not talking about abusing them but a drive that will give you an idea as to what you're getting into.
It's much like that high school cheerleader. The dreams you had about her were often better then the dates.
That said for me I love them all but they are quite different. The 275 was a great thrill to drive but it took a lot of concentration and grunt to do it. In the winter you had to stuff cardboard in the radiator to get the oil up to temp. It pulled up to 7000 in fifth (170MPH+/-) but fouled into a mess in traffic. I love the classics but I'm stuck in the 60ies. Not that that's a bad place to be stuck.
Best
Jim

jim, you are very right, and i wish i could drive them. having had a few different types of cars and some other driving opportunities, i can imagine some of what you are suggesting. however, this is sort of a mental exercise at this point, and is more along the lines of which one would be better to get first (while fully intending to get both at some stage).
in your case, which gave you more of a thrill, your older classics, or your higher tech racing machinery? (and don't answer: your classic racing machinery, cause thats too easy ;) ]

I wouldn't suggest "Closing you eyes and picking."
Before I bought either of these cars I'd drive them. They are quite different and IMHO it's a HUGE mistake to buy anything based souly on what you "think" you'd like to own...

You used the right word; "conundrum". Close your eyes and pick. But personally I would go for the F40.

on my list of cars to own before i die, are the 275gtb and the f40. currently these cars are more/less the same price at around the $250k level. so given that i continue to work hard every day to get closer to that moment when i have sufficient 'toy' money (so i should be there within 5 years), what should i get first?
i keep going round and round on this in my head. first thinking that i should get the f40 while i am still young enough to want to take it to the track. but then i think that f40 prices may come off some over the next 10 years but 275gtb prices may gain as people look for unusual investments, so therefore i should get that one.
i know this is all notional but its good to have goals......
