By Matthias Gafni - Vallejo Times-Herald

With speeds exceeding 100 mph and at times passing cars from the shoulder, about 200 contestants in the Gumbal13000 rally -a modern day "Cannonball Run" -raced their Ferraris, Porsches and BMWs through Solano County on Thursday night. Solano Highway Patrol Officers arrested three entrants and cited four others shortly after they left San Francisco's Fairmont Hotel en-route to Miami in the six-day road race.
The fifth annual rally, a mixture of horsepower and hedonism, consists of wealthy men and women racing their exotic sports cars -which included Lamborghinis, McLarens, Bentleys and an extremely rare and fast Koenigsegg.
Almost overshadowing the race are the late-night parties and chicanery provided by the entrants many of whom are supermodels, sporting heroes and Hollywood stars, according to one entrant's Web site.
The racers will make stops in Las Vegas, Tucson, San Antonio and New Orleans, before finishing 3,000 miles away in Miami Beach on Tuesday. The first leg began Thursday at 8 p.m. The group traveled across the Golden Gate Bridge, north on Highway 101, east across the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, then east on I-80.
Calls began flooding into the CHP call center when the cars exited the Carquinez Bridge and entered Vallejo. Ten separate logs entries were recorded by dispatch from 8:29 to 8:48 p.m. in Solano County, said CHP officer Chuck Monroe.
"'There were so many calls they thought they had 10 separate (incidents), when it was really only one," he said. "And that was only Solano County, so that gives you an idea of the number of calls involved."
Officers called in a CHP plane to help communicate with patrol cars, who set up in the Vacaville area.
Around 9 p.m., the vehicles were met by CHP officers in a five-mile I-80 stretch from Cherry Hill Road to Midway Road, Monroe said.

Officers witnessed high-speed lane changes and shoulder passes by three drivers and the trio were arrested on reckless driving charges.
Arrested and charged with one count of reckless driving in Solano were: Michael J. Ross, 42, of Surriton, England; Simon Hamill, 25, of Antrim, Ireland; and Robert Kenworthy, 30, of London. Their three cars impounded were, respectively, a 2000 BMW Z8, a 2003 Mercedes Benz SL500, and a 2002 Porsche 911. All three men were booked into Solano County Jail, quickly posted bail and recovered their vehicles around 2 a.m. from tow, companies, officials said.
Four other cars received citations in Solano: a 1999 Ferrari 550, 2003 Jaguar S-Type, 2002 Porsche 911 and 1996 Honda Prelude.
"I don't know how that got involved," Monroe laughed, referring to the not-so-extravagant Honda sedan.
All the cars involved had racing numbers painted on the exteriors and one stopped car had a personalized plate "indicating the Gumball rally," Monroe said.
Two contestants were arrested in Marin County earlier. Suresh Senthirajah, of Palo Alto, was driving a 1993 BMW 325 and Christopher Taylor, of Marina del Rey, was driving a 2002 BMW M3. Both were charged with reckless driving.
Solano officers had only brief warning of the race from dispatchers, Monroe said.
"From my understanding it's run as an underground race and only the participants are aware of the route, for obvious reasons," he said.
After Solano's contact with the entrants they radioed to other CHP departments to the east to warn them of the approaching vehicles. None of those departments, from Yolo County to the Nevada border, said they had any contact with racers. '
In 2001, the Gumbal13000 received notoriety when MTV's "Jackass" television crew followed the contestants from London to Moscow and back.
The event was formed in 1999 when organizer Maximillion Cooper, a 30-year-old Londoner, led 50 of his friends from London to Italy, resting at castles and palaces along the way.
Last year, Cooper sent revelers from New York to the Playboy Mansion in Beverly Hills.
The cross-country trek, inspired by the 1970s Burt Reynolds film "Cannonball Run," costs about $12,000 to enter.

Hummm!!!!
