gnarly

<jargon> /nar'lee/
Both obscure and hairy. "Yow! - the tuned assembler implementation of BitBlt is really
gnarly!" From a similar but less specific usage in surfer slang.

Humm?? You may be right, that was many moons ago, and I used that word quite often. You could be right.

Senna, I agree. I do not think that Bryant or James would judge someone for the way they were dressed. It is pretty casual down their

I bought my car from FOB and dealt with James and he was a terrific guy. I still call him up whenever I have questions. Bryant also was very helpful and treated me well. I don't think those two guys judge people by their appearance.

I go into Tonkin when I have to kill an hour or so on my visits to Portland. Real decent people.

One day the sales manager asked if he could help with anything. I replied, "No, just passing time, waiting for my other half." He said, "That's OK. I've had guys come in and kick tires for 10 years before they bought anything." I kind of got a chuckle out of that.

Never bought, but Tonkin was good to me a few weeks ago. Greg showed me around and told me about the cars and then opened the gift shop accross the parking lot in the pouring rain so I could buy a few nick nacks.

Another postive vote for Ron Tonkin. I have purchased two cars from them, a used 360 and a new Maserati. I would bend over backwards to try to purchase my next auto from them before looking elsewhere (of course, I am local so I have motivations to keep the relationship up).

I can't say enough good things about Greg Theis, although all of the sales guys are nice.

I would highly recommend them. As a bonus, their pricing has always seemed fair.

They should not judge you by the money in your pocket either.

DIkran saved my butt during the 2002 annual meet at LA cus my 512Tr had a loose hose clamp that no 1 found that would have screwed my whole week. They took my car in although they were very busy & saved my butt.

Thanks Dikran :-)

I have had only very positive experiences with FBH. I have purchased a used 355 and a new 360 from James; I have always found he and Bryant to be very helpful. Most people (many very affluent) coming in thier showroom are dressed very casually so I would be surprised if they judged them on the basis of what they were wearing. James is really a fabulous guy and I have known him for four years.

They moved the service center to the west side last year so they could expand the showroom and include Maserati. Previously it held four cars, now it can hold 12 to 15. They have a great selection of used vehicles if you want to stop by and check them out. I'm sure they won't mind.

Bryant is a great guy and gave me a test drive in a 575 two weeks ago. The F1 was very smooth and the torque on that thing is amazing. I also drove a Maserati F1 at the same time and the torque compared to my 360 was impressive. I can't wait for the 420 Modena.

The service center is now much easier to get to because it is now near the 405 freeway instead of in Beverly Hills, which is tough to get in and out of. Dikran has always treated me right and saved me a lot of money by getting things covered under warranty. He is always very helpful and they will go out of thier way for you. He and David have worked on all three of my cars and been great. They just updated the shifter brain in my 2001 to the latest version after it couldn't be adjusted properly.

My second Ferrari was bought from Ferrari of Atlanta and FBH recieved it for me and checked it out at no cost.

I think that they ask very realistic prices for thier cars and seek to move them at market value rather than ask very high prices like some others in Beverly Hills.

I am sorry that others may have not have had as positive an experince but I can only give these guys the highest recommendation.

I had a good customer experience with them on a white 88.5 Testarossa P.P.I. Dikhran looked at the car in late 2002. The car was not as described by the seller.

However one of the service administrators went above and beyond IMHO. He tried calling a few
local dealers while I waited, to see if there might be another car for me to look at.

They also did not run the compression check after they felt the car had a few issues. This saved
a few dollars.

Yet I have another good and bad story from an F
dealer from a different state. Go figure ?
I like the story about being dressed the wrong
way when looking for a car. My dad purchased
a new Merc a few years ago in a white undershirt.

From first contact to service, Ron Tonkin in Portland, OR is first class.....I've purchased two automobiles from them. I live in Seattle about 5 minutes from FoSeattle and they treat me like crap so I went down to Tonkin and bought autos from them. I just spent some time speaking with their service manager concerning my 360 and they were always polite and knowledgable! For sales ask for Greg.....He is an up and up guy and will bend over backwards to take care of you before and after the sale! And I mean that 100%

The only F Car dealerships I would ever deal with again in the future are Ron Tonkin and Steve Harris Imports in SLC.

Good Luck. And remember ask for Greg at Ron Tonkin!

Ron Tonkin is certainly a reputable dealer. I've never bought a car from them but I've used their service department off and on for years (they used to have an excellent service manager, but he quit recently which has me exploring alternatives).

I have chatted with their sales guys, and they've been pleasant enough. Of course, they know me so that doesn't mean much.

Overall, I haven't heard anything bad about them.

Bought my first one thru FOBh, and the car was impeccable, the price OK, details left to the east coast dealer who handled the transaction on my behalf. When i shipped my 550 to LA a few years ago, they acted as the receiving depot, called me as soon as the car arrived, had it washed and ready to go; ditto, when i came back from a 5 day drive up and down the coast:- they handled the arrangements with Hores-less Carriage. So, no problem. On Ron T., never bought a car from them, but called about a couple over the years. Only dealt at the saleman level:-pleasant enough. Big Ron's got a shitload of sweet F cars that he has plucked from every vintage over the years;unfortunately, not for sale as far as i know. Isn't FOBh still a "factory" store?

I can't really tell you about FBH the way I'd like to, because Rob's software would substitute my choice words with red dots!!!!

Bart,
Don't feel bad, they treat you like sh*t regardless of what you wear and how deep your pocket is. I went to their service dept. on 3 seperate occasions (within the space of a month). I spoke with the same service shop manager (Dihkran...Yeah buddy, I remember your fricking name) & everytime he asked me who I was (in a flip/condescending manner) & had I ever brought my car into them before. It's not like my Modena isn't memorable...It has British license plates on it, in the middle of California!. He either has a serious case of Alzheimers, or he was being a wise ass. As for the way I dress...well, the third visit I was in a 3 piece suit. FOBH's loss...My problem turned out to be a juicy clutch replacement, so the $5000 job went down the road to Autogallery...I've never been back to them since. You'll find similar sales stories on this site ....Scott, Hope this helps to answer your question!!

I spoke to James about a red 355B. The one huge negative I have about them is that none of their cars have the major belt service done.... Any opinions on Ron Tonkin in Portland would help...

I purchased my 550 about a year ago. I visited every dealer in Southern California. I will not to any business with Ferrari of Beverly Hills. Because I drive a dog as my every day car and dress very casual, they treated me like scum. They judge me by my appearance and not by the money in my pocket. I even had my wife with me during one of my visits.
Anyone who does not give my wife good service does not get my money.

FoBH now has their parts & service department across town, not with their showroom.

Scott, I spoke to Bryant at FOB. He was a good person to talk to. The other person is James. I bought another car at FOD, but I have not heard any bad stories. Curious, which car are you looking at??

I am looking for your experience with these two dealers. Both have cars that I will be looking at and I would to know if they are reputable dealers. Also, who should I speak to at these dealers??

Thanks,

Scott
