If you do a "google" search you will find a couple Shell websites that give a lot of technical details on the two products. They ARE different, made for different applications, Helix for cars, Rotella T synthetic for trucks. As you can see from the bottle, Rotella T synthetic is perfectly fine (and recommended) for passenger cars as well. I am presently using the Rotella T product in my 328 GTS as I picked up a bunch of it at Wal Mart on sale for $2.89 a bottle. I prefer synthetics, but use whatever happens to be on sale....when there is no sale, I prefer to use Mobil 1. I know some of the Ferrari dealers have used Rotella T synthetic when there have been shortages of Helix...So it can't be all that bad. To each their own....but I would think that Mobil 1 is entirely the equal to the Shell Helix product. That's what I would use in your 550 and 355. Me? I will continue to use whatever synthetic is on sale, they seem to be "good enough" for my sh*t box 328. :-) |

in another thread, someone opined that Shell had stopped making the Helix Ultra 5W40 synthetic that is spe'd for many F-cars. at WalMart today i found Shell Rotella T SAE 5W-40 Synthetic (API Service CH-4/SL). $4.92 by the quart. they also stocked it in a big container (gallon? didn't get the price on that). anybody know anything about this stuff? is it appropriate for the f-cars? how is it different than the spec'd (unobtanium) Helixe Ultra? tia, doody. |
