Mitch,
the service is the same between the two.

The answer without getting into the technical changes that Mitch pointed out, is simple engineering updates. This is what happens every 5-6 years in all cars. A 3L MB engine in 995 is not the same 3L they put in today.

The major significan difference is the valves went from 4 valves to 5 valves and they now have hydraulic lifters instead of shims.

Well lets see:

..............348 355 car
power.....320 380 HP
torque.....248 256 TQ
gears.........5 ...6 speeds
service.....15 ..30 Kmiles

More power, longer intervals between major services, faster. Essentially the same (but updated) body, chassis, suspension with a new interior. Why would they keep the old one in production?
