Jeff,

other main differences of the 355 engine are:

- lighter crankshaft
- titanium conrods
- different (lighter?) pistons - 5 valves
- Bosch Motronic 2.7 / 5.2 with eight
single throttlebodys

Regards

Bernd

Dr. S There is an altinator upgrade. It was done standard in one year.
I never head problems with mine. Replace the waterpump at 30K Miles when you have the engine out for service. Dumb design with a plastic wheel instead of metal.
Engine is super strong. Yes, in the configuration of the 348 it was discontinued. Blocks remained the same for decades. I believe though the 355 has a different block now. The 348 still has the same of the 308s or so. I am not entirely sure bout that though.

my 348 spider has run 50.ooo km without any problems. a friend of mine has run a rental 348 spider with different unexperienced drivers every week and it ran 170.000 km without mayor problems.
but dont forget the cambelts and service.

Well, yes, the 355 does have an additional valve per cylinder. There for the name 355 3.5 litre, 5 valves per cylinder. This is why I say the HEADs are different. Does anyone else know the differences in addition to the heads and the belts? (of course the .1 litre too........)

The 348 motor has a repuration for being very robust. The car is riddled with electrical shortcomings but the motor has an excellent reputation. The 355 motor has a lot more power and that, no doubt was the cause for replacemnt.

My understanding is that the differences in the engine itself and the engine of the 355 are few. The HEADS though, well that's a different story. Also, the 355 has two cam belts, the 348 only one...........

For what it is worth (I've only put just over a 1000 miles on mine so far) mine has performed flawlessly. It is a low miles engine as well (9300 miles).

Does anyone know why the engine in the 348 was discontinued when the 355 came out? Any known problems in the 348 engine
