BMC and K&N are virtually identical and let more stuff in than a conventional paper filter if not cleaned and properly oiled routinely. They are great for 40 hour race motors, but for street you may be better off with the paper. If you're worried about performance, change the stock filter in half the recommended service interval time.

My 550 seems plenty powerful with the OEM filters, IMO, and I track the heck out of it.

Mark, IMO, the intake restrictions on your engine do not come from these filters. They come from the circuitous trip the air take from the hood scoop to the intake manifold and from the diameter of the mass airflow sensors. That's why this 3,800 lb car (without the driver) will ONLY do 0-60 in 4.3 seconds, per the factory. LOL!

I've heard from various sources that K&N was known to let too much through. It will "dirty" your engine.

Consequently a lot of people I know have gone with BMC air filters. They have an excellent track record, although I don't know for what cars they have application. They do for Ferrari, I just don't know what models.

Disclaimer following... I don't have any interest in BMC blah blah blah...

William, you have some pretty kick ass machinery, so I'm sure you've done your research. Maybe my sources are wrong.

Cheers

Yes. I had them installed on virtually every F car i've owned. Most noticeable improvement was on the boxer. I've used K&N's.

I am picking up a 550 on Thursday. Does anyone have personal experience with either K&N or other low restriction filters on the 550? Any suggestions are appreciated.
