Don, Minor dents can usually be removed by any number of paintless dent repair places. Of course, chips need to be touched up. Assuming it is red or black, I would say around 40K would be fair, but 38K should not be insulting. You are looking at another major service in 2 years or less. You may want to have a good, experienced detailer look at it to get an opinion as to whether or not $500 spent on a touch up and wet sand would make it look great again. Dave |

Dave, Clutch replaced in 2001, and major service with belts & tensioner in 2000. Most records available and most work done by Ferrari dealer or independent shops. Car has not been a garage queen. Is it relatively easy and inexpensive to remove dings from doors and quarterpanels? Seems to be strong mechanically, good interior, but one area of paint a little cloudy and the dings are obvious. Any feels for price on car like this one? I've heard $40K, others say much less? |

I have an 86 328 GTS and my dad has an 87 328 GTS. I wouldn't say an 86 is more troublesome than an 87. Well, hard to say because neither has many problems. Service issues are directly related to maintenance quality. When I got my 328, i looked mainly for service records. As Martin said, not all major services are the same. Mine cost me almost $6000 in Sept 2000. I wanted a car to drive, so I wasn't _as_ concerned with cosmetics, but a requirement was original paint. Service history to make sure the car didn't sit for extended periods of time and a pre-purchase inspection is key. I have every record for my car and have all services on a spreadsheet with mileage and date. I can quickly generate a graph and look at the usage slope. Being able to do that was important to me when buying. Good luck Don! James Giang Hoang ps. I most likely will be selling my car soon *sigh* and hope the future owner buys the car for the same reasons as I did and can appreciate it as I do. |

There were a couple of recalls for early 328's, one replacing oil lines I believe and another changing suspension forks to heavier duty ones. Overall, however, the early ones don't really have any more bugs. There is more info in the Forza 328 buyers guide. If you buy an early one, it's nice to get receipts for the recalls. Regarding the car you are looking at, it sounds cosmetically weak and 30K cars should still be really good. Are there good records documenting the mileage? Also, did the service include tensioners and cam seals? Water pump rebuild? Has clutch ever been replaced? Dave |

Don, I just bought a 87 328 GTS in Dec. 02, red/black, 41,000 miles very good shape, paid $40,000. I have heard that the 86 was the first year for the USA verision, and that it had a few bugs ???. Not a lot of problems, but worth looking at the 87 or 88 unless you can geat deal on the 86 John |

below $40K. In fact look closely on the 30K invoice. I have seen some strange things lately on 30K services. In fact I have a flyer here from Shelton Ferrari saying the 30K for a 355 costs $3500. They do not however change the pullies and tensioners and that is what needs replacement more than the belts. I rather buy a car without the service and discount the car over a car that had it done and I have to question if it was done right.

I have been looking for a very nice 328 GTS for some time. I have seen a few lower priced cars that need major service or have poor paint/dings etc. I did see one 1986 with about 30K miles that is mechanically excellent, service/belts recently completed, but with a few door dings and fair to average paint. What do you think such a car may be worth in today's market? Thanks |
