Hi Kristoffer,

www.LeMans.org is indeed the official Le Mans site.

The last couple of years there were also a couple of Lehmann Volkswagen tubo's running in the LMP 675 class.

There are basically 3 LMP classes:

LMP 900 - Le Mans Prototypes 900 KG. These are the contenders for the overall win. Open cockpit.

LMP 675 - Le Mans Prototypes 675 KG. More or less the "middle of the pack". Open cockpit.

LMP GTP - Le Mans / GT Prototypes. Same as LMP 900 but closed cockpit. The Bentleys (aka Audi R8C) are the only ones running in this class.

If you're "into" Le Mans, take a look at my website at www.ExperienceLeMans.com

Best regards,
Jack

The Audis and Bentleys are turbocharged, and last time I checked, they run in the LMP class (GTP class for Bentley, but then again, they're the only ones there).

Thanks for the info Jack. What does LMP stand for and do you have a link to the official site?

Kristoffer,

I was just joking bebause you mentioned the Le Mans car and the closed designs...

Le Mans cars actually pull about the same lateral G force as F1 cars but are of course tuned in a different way as they have to last 12 times as long as a F1 car.

There are actually turbo-ed Le mans cars but they don't run in the LMP class.

As for adjustable wings and fans, I don't believe that there is ANY racing series that allows for that.

Mark, I believe that the NHRA type drag racing was faced with the same over-techno racing some years ago. With all the available technology, the driver was just there to steer! In astronaut terms, just "spam in a can"!!! I think the dragster guys outlawed alot of that computer techno stuff to keep the driver's existance more viable.

Do they have turbos in Le Mans? I thought they had like 500-600 hp:s. With turbo wouldnt they have like 1500 or so? They are not allowed fans to create vacuum (nearly) under the car as far as I know. And adjustable wings, is that ok? If this was the case along with the turbo I see no reason why the Le Mans cars shouldnt make much better lap times than F1:s.

>>>It would be nice if they were allowed lets say: adjustable wings, fans, turbo and had the closed car design.

Almost sounds like a Le Mans car...

Perhaps so. But I hope these changes will come. Sometimes I feel like it would be cool if they trashed the regulations completely though. Formula 1 should have the best cars around. Cars that are totally uncompromised. Like it is now the le mans cars are superior to F1 cars in some meaings. It would be nice if they were allowed lets say: adjustable wings, fans, turbo and had the closed car design.

Uh... it was actually the team bosses that more or less forced the FIA to withdraw these as they felt they had too little time....

I was hoping that they would get rid of the stability control and other gimmics. They were supposed to after 1 of july. But FIA changed their minds and withdrew the new regulations. It could have been more fun racing.

Yep

if it wasn't for a few trees overhanging some of the tracks and affecting GPS signals the drivers would no longer be required!!!!

I'm joking of course but in reality the technology is there to turn it in to a larger version of slot racing

Not only do the new f1 cars have an auto mode, they have a mode that you can program the exact/best shift points on the track and upshifts and/or downshifts at the same place every lap.

Collin, true but with the speeds they approach and the lack of slicks...they are hard as balls as I understand, to keep in control on turns at the limit.

Actually Matt, that's yesterday's technology. They shift up by keeping their foot on the throttle. F1 cars are currently using auto trannies, with the paddle shifts in place as a backup.

Seems as though this takes some of the "skill" out of the race, does it not? Kind of like having a electric tennis racket to hit the ball for you, you just have to be in the right place on the court to hit it. ???

All you have to do is push a button. One to shift up one to shift down. It shifts the gears VERY quickly

I've always wondered this. I saw qualifying at Austria this a.m. on TV. It showed some video from the driver's perspective, I could hear the gears changing, but didn't notice the driver doing anything to change them. Can someone explain this to me?
