James thanks for the historcal explanation ! They probably use those 5 spokes wheels when the car is racing and put the wire wheels back on when the car is being displayed at a concours . |

Great pic James. I am in a running battle with my wife over whether I can put my track-scarred Ducati in the living room or not. I can't blame her entirely as she did already agree to a couple of wind-tunnel scale models hanging from the walls. |

Thanks to both of you for posting. People tend to forget what real race cars look like a race...

It is also interesting to note the differences of the before (Andrew's pictures-start of rally) and after (Mine-end of rally) pictures. |

These pictures are superb. Thanks for posting them, Ken and Andrew! Any more? I would love to see them all. That blue 250 SWB is simply exquisite. My heart starts pounding just looking at that picture. Ferrari got so many styling elements just right so long ago--what a treat! |

I do have more. If demand is there I'll put them up. Have to scan, resize, etc. Pain in the b*tt. Thank god the semester is over. I see Andrew's pictures are clearer.

Andrew In 64/65 the tires got to the point(Grip wise) that they could actually bend wire wheels. One of the first to realize this was Carrol Shelby and he replaced the Borani's on the GT40's with mag Halibrand and the GT40's began winning races. Ferrari switched to mags on his race cars but at a later date than Shelby. That's one reason the Cobra's won the championship for Ford/Shelby. |

I see what you mean James . Do you think its possible they considered the borranis too fragile to race ? |

Andrew I would think slotted mags like the ones on the 275GTB would be more period correct if one felt the Boranis were too fragile. It is great to see these cars being used! Best Jim |

Yep the Borranis wire wheels were OEM's on the LM but i think those are more appropriate for racing and this car is used in the Ferrari Historical challenge. |

They look like Daytona or 512BB1 wheels & street tires. As I recall, wire wheels were the OEM kit for the 250 LM, weren't they? |
