Tom, It's a pretty involved story; but here goes nothing: The carfax indicates a total of three owners starting in NJ when new and ending in TX with a wholesaler; whom Ken is assisting. The only person knowledgeable about the car is the owner prior to the wholesaler. That owner, a Lexus dealer, attempted to sell the car on e-bay, irregularities ensued and the ridiculous reserve wasn't reached. So the dealer sold to the wholesaler at auction and there went the paper trail. Neither the wholesaler or Ken (never spoke to seller, only Ken) could come up with service history. The wholesaler thinks he has a premium car (must be the low mileage) but I know that the car had it's 30k done by a Lexus dealership tech - Still following - and there aren't receipts for that. The wheels are flaking badly, none of the hood shocks work, one is missing, and that's what I know prior to a PPI. I provided the entire known Mondial sales history since last November to establish a fair price, but the wholesaler wants about what my local FNA dealer wants for a Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet in similar condition with impeccable paperwork and service history.

THe real shame is that my wife is in Dallas as I write. She had hoped to look at the car, but this crazy wholesaler and lack of paperwork thing makes that a moot point. I tried, but this one is beyond me. Ken seems like a nice guy. I'm just sorry he's stuck between the sleazeball selling the car and anyone interested. Even Ken said that he thinks the car will go to auction and end up being "flipped" until some dealer sticks it to a sucker.

My search continues.

Ken, thank you for all your assistance. It's regrettable that the seller is unable to provide you and I with the service history to justify the exhorbitant price they are asking. Considering the apparent defects and the seller's intransigence about negotiating either repairs or cost, there's just no way I can pursue this car. I do appreciate all of your efforts on my behalf. I wish we could have made a deal. I wish you the best of luck selling the car!

Thanks to Dave and Norman for your comments on the Euro Mondials. EPA / DOT certification was "allegedly" done but I will follow-up on this. Ken, I love the photos! Is your cigarette lighter missing? It looks like the third cylindrical slot is empty....Thanks, John

Regarding the euro model question, the biggest issue is documentation. It is critical that it have the EPA & DOT paperwork in order. In addition, that the paper work is real( which should also be verified!). Calif emmissions is a whole other issue. This is a subject that you need to consult with someone who is intimately familiar with what it takes to comply in Calif. As mentioned previously, it could be an expensive venture to meet requirements. Also keep in mind, that it is possible for a car to have been certified, then have the emmissions removed, and put back to euro configuration.

This is the car I had mentioned. I finally got pic's to post. The car when not being driven has been on a lift in the owners garage for the last 7 years. I drove the car today and it ran very smooth and not to mention it looks fantastic. It is 94 degrees outside here today and the A/C great. The car has not had any paint work at all, it is original. The only thing that I could see wrong was the finish has come off in places on the wheels. It also had a full service 2 years and 1k miles ago. If anyone is interested you can E-mail me at [email protected]. Upload

John,
You should probably talk to some local mechanics familiar with certifying euro models in your area. If I were you, I would be reluctant to buy a car that was not previously ceretified in CA. Otherwise, it could be expensive. Besides adding cats, you might need a new ignition module and or fuel system module. The addition of a potential 10HP would be hard to even notice in the Mondial.

Hello, just joined the chat today. Does anyone have advice (pros or con) about buying or owning a Euro-version of the Mondail? For instance, I have heard they don't have c.converters (which gives them an extra 10 hp), but I wonder if that makes it harder to smog-certify in CA? Metric wheels, etc. Any other ideas? Thanks.

I, too, am interested in a 3.2 Mondy. I sent you a private email but am posting here as a back up. Would love to learn more; am dead serious about the right car. I would also welcome any info or leads on well maintained 3.2 Mondial coupes for sale, as well as any tales of the ownership experience, from other readers and posters. Thanks!

Ken,
I sent you an e-mail direct last night. Things that I am real interested in are: service history, minor issues with the car, location, and where I might get a PPI? If you have pics, inspection reports or other info, they would be much appreciated.

Ken,

I've seen them go with more mileage for low to mid 20's. I'm actually in the market for a Modial 3.2. Perhaps we can talk?

I'm helping a friend sell his Red-Tan 87 Mondial coupe with 17K miles on it. It has all books and records and has not had any paint work at all. It is in really good condition. Can anyone tell me what it's worth? Also a major service has recently been completed. I'll get pics. if anyone is interested. Thanks.
