And depending on what you do with the clutch during a missed shift, the clutch disc can explode into a million pieces, ha! I got a free Saab 9000 turbo because the previous owner did this. He didn't want to pay for the repairs and just gave it over to the shop owned by my friend. He gave it to me for the cost of a clutch kit and flywheel resurface and we put it back together and it was fine. But when we saw what happened to the clutch we had quite a laugh. The transmission lost its first gear synchro but other than needing to come to a stop before engaging 1st, the car was otherwise fine. I gave it to my little brother eventually and he is still driving it today. I can imagine that would be an expensive repair on a 550! |

Mark: The listed redline for the 550 is : 7700 (575's has been lowered to 7250 on account of the larger displacement); the fuel cut is marked at 8500. That said, OEM tachometers are notoriously innacurate. Also, an occasional misshift isn't neccessarily going to granade your motors, it's prolonged exposure to excessive revs that can unfurl a valve spring, bend a rod, or spin a rod bearing; again, I said not neccessarily, but you could still drop a valve even on one misshift. It's a case by case thing, I don't think you came critically close to fubar-ing your motor, but weren't far off. It would be a good time to perfect slow upshifts. PS- Just dynoed my friends "race motor", and it made power all the way up to 9700rpm. |

Isn't that why these cars have a rev limiter? If that is not deactivated, why would you do harm to the engine? (Not advocating this, just asking). Also, the coolant hoses in that car are, to my knowledge, prone to go. Dunno why. I had a minor leak in the one under the plenum which made for real trouble until the mechanic yanked the plenum off and replaced the hose. Cost of hose. 2.00 Mechanic time -priceless |

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what the survivable rev limit on a 550 engine would likely be. I saw 8,500 on mine due to "driver error" when I missed a shift in the heat of battle. I felt like a complete idiot, but fortunately the engine is fine. One of the coolant hoses was another matter. The tech at Shelton told me it was "an impressive sight" as the hose completely split from end to end! The hoses are original(1999 550. Just wondered how close I really came to emptying my wallet?!!! |
