I've been thinking of this topic for quite some time now. Justifying my habit? That all of this time that I spent working on my car, to take this thing that has been neglected for years before me and to turn the key and breathe new life into it, to stand back and say: "I did it", is all the justification in the world to me. Besides, it keeps me outta the bars on Friday night (Lord knows I've done too much of that before and done some stupid stuff... I know better now). |

Martin I've been thinking about a 308 club racer for awhile now. It would be sweet. Strip it down, totally deck it out with Nick Scianna's stuff (make it like 350hp). And just love it up and down. Sell off the mag rims and other stuff that you can and use that money towards racing stuff. You could do a wide body kit for good rear tires with slicks. That Italian Design place has a whole lot about that. Get a 2 valve car injected car and twin turbo it, it's a better value than a 4 valve would be to strip down. Someday I'll do this when I can afford it, although by the time I can I'll be talking about stripping down a 360 since it'll be awhile. It's better to invest now I think since I'm young, but it is tempting with the 308 prices being lower than ever. |

Hey Mark; I'll buy your car if it is cheap. Need a 308 as a club racer. |

I would hate to think you spent that much money to have it sorted and then give it up. From the sounds of it, you should get 8 good years with no problems now. |

My 308 runs great, I was test driving it after installing Nick's Krank Vent kit (which seems to work great based on my 2 mile test drive). My car had over $8k receipts including belts, water pump, all major work, 90% of which had to be redone! But for $10k worth of unexpected rework, I too would feel this is a great car, but at some point one has to say enough is enough! But then again, if it's just a relay .... |

Ferraris should NEVER be considered as investments. If you made money on it it's just a happy bonus. |

99.9% of Ferraris are not an investment! I'm sorry you've had problems with yours. The #1 advice to anyone buying is buy a good one up front, unless you want to spend the time and money. I think the ROI on maintenance is about -80%. Let the previous owner get stuck with that, not you. I know you must be frustrated and think all Ferraris are like yours, but out of 20 owners I keep in close touch with, all just do standard maintenance and it never breaks down on them. Non standard maintenance items should only be about $100 to $1,000 a year for the 308 series. |

I can't justify any longer. Having owned my first, and last, Ferrari (1982 308 GTSi)for 5 months now. I have put over $12k into it in that time span on top of about $10k by seller in previous 18 months (of which I re-did abot $8k). Last night it died on me, I am pretty sure it is fuel pump relay, will be replacing all Bosch ..113 relays on board. Then I'm going to sell at a tremendous loss of my investment....Runs like a champ, just took it from Colorado to Las Vegas and back, but I think Yahoo stock would be a better investment.... |

I guess if you justify that you do not have to justify, you are justifying after all to not have to justify, which proves that justifying not to justify is really justifying and unjustified? hmm. |

Gheez, I though that BobD meant that as a joke... You guys really get into this. Justifying not justifying... I tried that BobD and my wife just flat out laughed at me. They she tried to convince me of the investment value of a Diamond ear ring! I got your post, don't worry! |

Exactly - if you have to find a reason to justify buying a Ferrari - then why bother ? |

I am approaching 50 and one day maybe have to join the viagra crowd. Every time I drive my Ferrari I come home and visit my wife. She loves that I am able to leave the stress on the road. I feel 19 when I drive my 348. That's justification enough. Dan |

Heck-my justification is that I'm 67yrs old so half my life is over!!! But I feel 21yrs old behind that 360. |

Robert hit the nail right on the head. We work hard for these cars. And you are damn right we deserve them. My Ferrari is my therapy, and its a whole lot cheaper than any shrink I know!! |

My justification is I wake up every morning, go to work, Monday through Friday 9-5......I deserve this Ferrari. I need no other reason. |

I've had a seriously crappy day, so I'm leaving my office, going home, and taking my Ferrari out for a haul ass ride. When I'm done I'll have a sh*t eating grin on my face. That's all the justification I need. |

Justifying a Ferrari is like having to justify Beethoven or Michelangelo |

Looking back.... I've already GAINED 30% on the purchase of my 328. I bought it in '99 when stock values were peaking. Some people thought I was crazy for "dumping" money into a Ferrari. Had I put that same $$$ into the market, I would have lost 30% by now, maybe more. The price of my 328 has remained stable. Damn, I should have bought a few more! BTW, this is a great way to justify the $4K cost of major belt service.... tell your wife this story just before you break the news to her. :-) |
