AS Gerald said. I had actually seen the advertisment in FML for months. However the ad did not go into much detail and for whatever reason I never inquired about the car. I seemed to talk to everyone who had a Daytona for sale but Mark. Then suddenly my E-type sold, some business expansion efforts began paying dividends and I was seriously looking for a Daytona. I had met Gerald about 10 years ago when considering starting an automotive focused fine art print business (an idea ultimatly abandoned as too risky). I decided to give Gerald a call to talk Daytonas a bit knowing he literally "wrote the book" on them. He suggested an early Euro car had some distinct advantages such as less weight over the nose and overall. He also suggested I call Mark as he knew this car and it was very nice.... and of coarse local. I did. Mark and I met.... I was floored by the condition and history of the car and by Marks fanatical upkeep and maintenance routine. The rest is history.

Let me make a little side comment. Gerald did not in any way "push" this car. He simply told me he knew it was nice and that Mark took good care of it. I do not know Gerald well and had not spoken to him in many years since our first meeting. However I can tell you he is a very gracious and generous individual with his time. 10 years ago when I met him, I was some young kid with dreams of riches who was begging for information about a particular Ferrari GTO. Gerald invited me to his home/office, devoted an amazing amount of time to showing me around and teaching me about that car and Ferrari history in general. His archives and knowledge simply blew me away and his active effort to help me with no motivation other than just being a nice guy left a lasting impression. He even took me for a thrilling ride in his AMAZING Tojeiro racecar! Gerald is part of the reason my passion for Ferraris grew stronger at a time when I did not have two nickels to rub together!

Richard: Your Dino is gorgeous! If you have not parted with it yet, why not drive it up this weekend and we can take them both out for some fun! I have never driven a 246.... if you have never driven a Daytona perhaps there is a bit of seat time trading to be done! In any event I would love to show you the car and spend some time playing with it. Heck, thats what I will be doing anyhow!

Gerald.... are you going to the party/swapmeet that TRutlands is having next month? I would love to get a picture of you with my car.

Car was Dr. Mark Gronsbell's S/N 12775 and has been advertised in the Ferrari Market Letter since July 2002.

Hey Terry,

I think I have sold my Dino and I am on my next quest for another vintage Ferrari in pristine condition. I can't believe you bought that here in Atlanta. Was that Arthur Montgomery's Daytona? How did you find it?? Would love to see it. I am in Buckhead off W. Paces.

Coachie... The battery is an Optima. The PO put this in because its sealed and will never leak, plus its over 800 CCA. HE also installed the cut off switch. The battery hold down is a custom setup to fit the physically smaller battery but still attach to the factory points. It would not be a big deal to put together. I have all the factory battery hold down parts and stuff, but like the safty of a sealed unit. No leaky nasty battery crap... Then again you know I'm not a concours show car kinda guy. My car also has a remote Halon fire system installed.

When you can ID a weekend that looks good for you, let me know! I'm sure if we plan a week or two in advance we can get a decent number of guys together.

Looking at your photos Terry, i wondered what type of battery you have> I noticed you are able to install the battery holder and the quick battery disconnect...I need one of those. As for the ride...let me finish with my second son's wedding, vacation at the beach etc...then we will discuss...

No chance to get photos with my Miura and the Daytona together. My Miura has a steady leak in the header tank...so it'll be a while before I get it back on the road. However, I had THE most amazing ride and drive in Terry's Daytona! First of all it's a nearly perfect example...probably a 1- on the SCM scale. The car handles like a dream, has no perceptible rattles or shakes and really pulls. I downshifted from fifth to fourth floored it and went from 75mph to 110 mph in no time. All the while, the engine is breathing and singing its powerfully sweet note! What a great ride! Two thumbs up on the excitement meter! Thanks, Terry.

Terry,
Congrats. If you remove the seats (4 allen bolts each) you can access the four trim screws that hold the console down. Removing the console allows access to the parking brake pawl. They are a bit difficult to find, but a Fiat 124 Spider handbrake is the same so you can boneyard this part for next to nothing and use the parts. It's an easy fix.

The bumper question regarding the silver car is a result of the USA specs I believe. The bumper height on USA cars in front is lower than the Euros.

I don't know. I kind of like the patina of a hammered on knockoff. I look at the dents in the ones on my MK-IV and think of the people who put them there. Carrol Smith, Phil Remmington, Max Kelly, Charlie Agaipou...

I have the spinners too and not the nuts. The problem with the 9"=ers is that the wheel is so deep that you cannot reach the spinners very well. The wrench tool comes with two extentions, one for the nut and one for the spinner.

Personally I would (and do) refrain from using any hammer on knockoffs. There are several forms of wrenches that will work on eared knockoffs. The one I use on my 1953 race car is a bit clumsy to carry around in the car, being almost three feet long, so a proper (NOT lead) hammer is carried for emergencies.

The euro cars have knockoff spinners with ears that you do "Knock Off" with a hammer. The US cars have wheel nuts which take a wrench. Spinner type knock offs were outlawed in the US in 67 but some euro cars slipped in. Look at the pics of my P4 and you'll see how big those knockoff ears got. The lead hammer which comes with a car with knockoffs can mar the knockoffs whereas the Snap on dead blow won't.

Well... crazy or not, Ive realised a childhood dream and bought a Daytona! I picked it up today.

Its a Euro 1969 365GTB/4. Ferrari red with black interior. It was the 51st Daytona built. SN 12775.

The car has lived here in Atlanta since 1975 with the same owner. I got all books and records including the factory build sheets and all maintenance receipts for 25+ years. It had a complete engine rebuild 12K miles ago. Its got factory competition pistons, ported and polished heads, comp. spec cams, lightened flywheel, and tons of other machining work that was done. Everything was balanced to within a gram. Its got updated ignition with optical pickups and twin MSD boxes. It has the Euro headers and exhaust. Prior owner claims it should be good for 400hp. I sure cant argue from how it drives! The transaxle was totally rebuilt 1000 miles ago including new clutch and the entire braking system is less than 500 miles old. Its got stainless exhaust, 7.5" front and 9" rear campy wheels with AVS intermediates. Pirkle paint is awesome, interior has been all redone, its GORGEOUS!!!

This thing pulls like a freight train! The torque is amazing. At about 3000 rpm it begins to wail and pull hard. By 4000 is really pulling, shoving you back into the seat. Just when your really getting impressed with the power and torque.... you hit 5500rpm and it gets CRAZY. I LOVE driving this thing!

I can honestly say at this point its everything I always dreamed of!

I also pulled too hard on the emergency brake... and i believe it skipped a notch on the ratchet. The brake is now dragging and making a horrible noise when driving at low speed. Anyhow, Ill get that fixed this evening and tomorrow its to the mountains I go!!!!

See seperate post on Atlanta area Mountain Drive for Saturday!
