Charles,

I'm looking into lifts as well. I think I will get set up once the rains come again. You're right for the price you can get a nice lift and fill out your tool chest.

It's awesome that it's you daily, I drive a Dodge 3500 diesel about 50k mi. a year. I'd much rather do it in a Ferrari. I don't find mine impractical, in fact the last few nights it's gotten me to the grocery store and back. Seem that I keep forgetting something. :-)

What about the people that don't ask the question. You know...those people that stare when you get out of the car, they're dying to ask you a million questions but don't.

No Phillip what I said was "Let's face it, unless you have a brand new Ferrari you probably got it fairly cheap." That is a far cry from what you said I said!

They're cool cars. Very, very fast, very unique, and a handful at 160+. I understand the Speed 6 engine that TVR has been focusing on has some reliability issues, although I keep hearing it's been fixed.

Recently, TVR's build quality has improved greatly. If anyone has an interest and is planning to visit England or Malaysia, I recommend a factory visit. You can also rent TVRs in England. But please be aware, it rains a lot there, and a 4 second car without traction control or ABS is a lethal weapon.

Vince I see what your saying but I don't view my car as a luxury. It is my primary transportation and as far as cost is concerned I do most of the work on it myself. I am even considering buying one of those garage car lifts so I can do the engine out service myself. For the cost of one major you can own the lift and buy most of the parts. Something to think about!

Hey, I didn't say that I concurred with Charles, I was just paraphrasing him.

CHARLES SAID, that he paid 45K for his car and that he felt that unless you owned a new F-Car that you would want people to think it is worth more.

Sheesh, it is 3 day weekend, I am off to lake Tahoe. See you guys!

I have told people how much the car cost. Even if it the same price as an SUV it still is very hard for most people to justify a Ferrari, most definitely a luxury. Some people want to know if they could own one though they find them very impractical (I dsagree), some of us just NEED one.

The "Can I drive it?" question is tough one too. Sometimes I answer with a big smile and say: "In your dreams." or I say "I'f YOU're driving then what do I do?"

I haven't really kept the price a secret, so I like to keep some of the mystery that comes with owning one of these cars. Plus it's my car. :-) I am generous with everything else, but I am not ready to let somebody else drive it.

When asked what I do for a living, I tell the truth: "I'm unemployed."

That really confuses the hell out of them.

My financial affairs are none of anyone else's business. It doesn't matter whether it cost 50 cents or a few hundred thou or millions - it's rude to ask the price.

Right Charles! Well I don't have that problem. I don't have a wife and I don't get 'it' anyway so the situation is quite simplified.
Ernie, I was actually asked 'Did you buy it knew?'. I answered that the car was 25 years old and I wasn't rich then like I am now, (tongue in cheek)
When asked what I do for a living I usually answer, 'I punch a time clock just like you.' I usually get a surprised look at that one like he's thinking, '......then why don't I have one?'

"How much was it?" That has to be the biggest pain in the ass question. All they wanna know is are you rich. Some of the numb nut questions are. 'Did you buy it brand new?', or 'How much are your payments?'. Then they still don't stop with the questions. I know you guys have gotten 'What kind of work do you you do?'. I have started telling people I'm a janitor, lol.

But what I HATE the most is "Hey let me drive it" AAAAAHHHHH! I hate that. I have come up with an answer that shuts them down cold. I say, "You don't understand the magnitude of the question you just asked. That is like if I asked some one 'Hey can I F#CK your wife/mom?"

99% of the time you will not get any more questions. And yes I have used that one several times.

Phillip, I respect your position but once again I think you are trying to compare apples to oranges. There is no comparison between asking how much you paid for a gift and how much a car cost. This is a matter of context here. If you were talking to someone about a new lawnmower you bought on sale at Sears the other day and they said really how much was it, would that be rude? I think whether or not it is a rude question depends on the situation in which the question is asked.

I'm sitting in my 308 in front of Ferrari of Seattle a couple of Saturdays ago after a tech session when a couple of 'sisters' (not nuns either) pull up and ask, "Is that your car or do you just work here?". After the initial moment of 'What the f**?' I simply answered cordially,"It's mine". She just said, "It sure is a beautiful car" and I said, "Thank you". No harm done, no big deal, I'm sure no insult was intended. I think some people are unsure of how to approach or what to say.
On the other hand;

Q 'How much does it cost?'
(If it's a fellow enthusiast)
A Less than a new a new Tahoe.
A They sell for between 30 and 40 thousand depending on year, conditon and market.

Q 'What's it do in the quarter mile?'
A It wasn't built for drag racing. It was built for high speed touring hence the words Grand Tourismo in the name.
A It's top speed is more than most cars on the road.

Q 'How Fast will it go?'
A The owners manual says XXX MPH.

Etc..........................

If I am feeling sarcastic? (a repeat)

Q 'What did it cost?'
A My last girl friend

Q 'Is the maintenance expensive?'
A Not as much as my last girl friend

Q 'Is it really fast?'
A Not as fast as my last girlfriend

Q 'Is it fun to drive?'
A Not as fun as............nevermind.

I still have problems with the cost question though. People really get offended sometimes when you don't give them a straight answer. I guess it fits in the catagory of questions like, "How's your wife in bed?'

IF YOU NEED TO ASK YOU CAN'T AFFORD IT!

PThomas and Philip:

I take grave offense to your post that stated "everyone that owns a 3x8 is clearly only concerned with making themselves out to have more than they do.......geesh, talk about ego". How dare you slap the face of FCar enthusiasts that own these cars! I could write a check today for a $200K FCar, but I won't. I have always been fond of the lines of a 308. I am on my second one that took me two years to find, an extremely low chasis number Euro that I just put about $25K into. I think you need to clean up your venacular and support all of us 'low-life hillbillies' that find beauty in the 3X8 series. You owe all of us a sincere apology! Man..This is no way to get up in the morning and read posts like yours!

Charles, I disagree completely.......asking how much something is, whether it's a Ferrari, a Taurus or a Christmas present is a rude question....I haven't said if I answer it or not....my car was about 53000.00 Some of the 360's on this board are 200+ and Mr. G's cars could be even more........whether anyone answers them truthfully, ambiguously, or mysteriously, it's still a rude question......if you gave you children, or any child a gift, and they loved it, said Thank You, How much did it cost, would you not correct them and tell them that the question is inappropriate.........why's it appropriate to ask a stranger that question.............Manners are gone today.......has no bearing on egos. It's rude. And yes, people have asked me how much my Mini Cooper was.........still rude.

Charles, >>>Most Ferrari owners are ego-maniacs, they want people to think their car cost more>>>.

I think that is applicable if you own a 308/28/48.

I have had people drooling over my car at a gas station and when I answered honestly the conversation always turned to:

I would NEVER spend that much money on a car.

Anything over 100K is a waste of money.

You could buy a house for that much. (I think: Where??? Not in California).

The conversation always takes a turn for the worst. People have a certain $ amount stuck in their head. When they here over a 100K they blow a gasket.

if someone asks I just tell them - you can pick one up for around 30-35k - that way you answer their question but don't have to get too personal. It is diff than asking someone their salary because the general price of the car is basic public knowledge if you do a little research

I knew that would hit a nerve! I agree that in most cases this would be a rude question but there is no comparison between asking how much you make and how much the car cost. The reason people feel it is ok to ask is they are always hearing how expensive these things are. Lets face it, if you were talking to someone about your new Ford Tarus and someone asked you how much it was you wouldn't even think twice about telling them what you got it for. The fact is most owners don't want people to know thier Ferrari didn't cost as much as they think it did and that is why they don't want to answer that question. This may not apply to all Ferrari owners so don't take offense if your not one of them. Otherwise if the shoe fits!

Alex is right on......it's a rude question...regardless of what article one is speaking of.....I'm sure women may have complimented your wife on a particular outfit, maybe someone has complimented you on an outfit, do they ever say, nice dress/suit, how much did you pay for it.........has anyone visited your home and said, your house if very pretty, what's your mortgage per month.......do you give your family or friends christmas presents with the price tags on? It's just a rude question, just because we own ferraris doesn't make us ego maniacs it also doesn't mean we don't appreciate common manners............

My last two cars have been Vipers, and they are like people magnets. Heres a few of the most popular questions I get:

How much does it cost?
How fast will it go?
Will you take me for a ride? (young females)

My responses:

More than I can afford.
Faster than a police car.
My kids are older than you are. :-)

Why is everyone so put out by the "how much was it" question? I think it is because most Ferrari owners are just ego-maniacs that want everyone to think thier car was really expensive. Why not just tell the truth like I do, it's more fun anyway. Let's face it, unless you have a brand new Ferrari you probably got it fairly cheap. I got my 348 for $45K. My wifes beamer cost more than my car. I actually get a kick out of the fact that I am driving a Ferrari for less money than most stay at home moms spent on thier SUV's. Most people really don't have a clue what these things cost so owners take advantage of that to pump up thier ego.

"Who makes that?"
"It's a Ford engine right?"
"Lotus...they're made by Lamborghini right?"
"Aren't they owned by GM?"
"How much?"
"It's a ~only~ a four cylinder?!?"
"It's a V10 right?"

I think the most asked question aside from the price is, "How do the doors open?"

Very first question, everytime: How much does it cost?

Here is what I tell them (I love this one).

"It was a little bit less than my first house."

You should see the look on their face. No more questions about price. I HATE that question. Because the second you answer honestly, there are 20 MORE questions about price.

Try it. You will love it. It works!

"Is that the Magnum PI car?"

"How fast can it go?"

"How fast have you had it up to?"

"How much does one of those cost?"

"Want to trade?"

"Mind if I take a closer look?"
and of course that last one always gets a "sure, go ahead" and if they're fairly young I may offer to let them sit in it. I also keep a supply of 308 HotWheels in my trunk, and may give them one if it's a kid that's asking.

I always get a compliment, usually followd by how much did it cost.

A similar thread came up about 6 months ago, and I forget who said it, but they answered "A Lot", which is what I use.

I'm thinking of changing my license plate to A Lot and next time tell them the price is on the plate...

I also get "what year is it" a lot plus "is this the new Mustang?" when they see the Cavallino on the rear of my Spider.

Usually I get a compliment first - last week, a kid said to me (really) "Dude, that is one f****** badass car."

Then I ALWAYS am asked: "How much did it cost?" "How much did you pay for it?" etc. Still haven't thought of a great answer, but might steal "oh, about 40-50 kilos worth", LMAO

I get "what year is it"? When they hear its a '77 (26 years old) they're usually incredulous.

i usually answer the 'how much' question with 'you don't even want to know'. this avoids a figure and keeps the mystery alive for the asker, because he doesn't really want you to tell him that it costs less than his suv, he wants to say he saw an expensive car blahblahblah.

but the other most asked question is usually 'how fast does she go'. to that one, just answer the listed top speed and that normally rocks their world and gets a smile, and that is the other thing they wanted to hear and pass on to their friends.

one other funny one i get sometimes is 'what year is it', to which i ask back, 'what year do you think it is'. most people who ask this question are not cognoscenti, so i guess its not surprising when they answer 'it looks new, or maybe a couple years old', to which i love telling them its actually 11 years old......

Typical question here in Germany is usually:
"How much is it?"
Quite sad and I mostly say that its not as cheap as a Toyota or something like that.
I hate that question.
Funniest question of one guy at a petrol station when he approached with his friend and looked in the open engine bay:
"Is this a kit car?"
Ohhhhhhhhh man, I really had to laugh: You see a 348 Ferrari engine and ask this...
His friend rudely corrected him and said it cant be a kit car because it looks to original. How true!

Same throughout all of Asia I think Faisal. Culture shock for sure (coming to the U.S., that is).

I meant tell them you're car-sitting or that your boss asked you to run some errands. Those work well.

Cheers

I'll answer any questions concerning driving dynamics. And if someone is really a car person (you can usually tell) I'll take some extra time, show the enginge that kind of stuff. And of course, any kid that wants a closer look gets the royal treatment especially if they act a little afraid to touch it. I remember when I saw my first one up close, too cool. But man, that $ question really bugs me.

Taek-Ho,
in India people use this as a menacing threat...as in "Do you know who this car belongs to..." or "Do you know who my dad is?"

Guaranteed to raise barriers and allow your car to pass through, or to make corrupt civil servants give in to your wishes meekly.

Funny how quickly you forget when living abroad...it's always a bit disconcerting when I go back and my cousins use these lines...

If someone asks if it's yours just say no. It'll stop all other annoying questions. Any other questions coming from the guy will be about the driving dynamics of the car.

That's what I've found works best. If they don't ask, just say the car is not yours when they ask you how much.

Cheers

Nope, not single. Just like the expression, and the implication that I'd rather have my car than the house.

Would be funny to answer "oh, about 40-50 kilos worth" to the "how much?" question, just to see the expressions. (if it didn't promote a certin stereotype I guess.)

"Less than a new SUV" would be a very funny one for those with 3x8s (and I guess 348s and maybe even a few 355s these days, what with resale value and Porsche Chyanes<sp,> running around. Man, there's a thought...)

Best!
Ben.

I always say, "I don't know...it was a gift." Or, "I got this, she got the house," as I shrug and walk away.

I can't stand being asked how much something cost. It's none of anyone's freakin' business! And if they're that curious, they can make a quick phone call to a dealer or look it up on the web.

Women especially seem to think that if they ask in their sweetest voice "Do you mind if I ask how much it cost," then it's ok to ask. It most definitely is NOT.
