Oh, low blow on that truck engine comment! :-)

Actually, combining 2 engines together is not that stupid. It was first done in 1928 by Ettore Bugatti when created a 250 HP 16 cylinder engine from two V8s. VW group is continuing the Bugatti tradition today by combining two Audi W8s (four V4s) to come up with a 1,001 HP, 16 cylinder aggregate engine for their Bugatti Veyron 16-4.

Yep, UPS syndrome :-) The exhaust on a viper (Gen1/Gen2) are not crossed over or connected anywhere. SO you have a 4litre 5cylinder on both sides, hence the funky sound. The odd-fire setup is what creates the "diesel" sound. You add a corsa exhaust and things sound much better.

The new SRT-10 has a crossover, where the pipe on the drivers side exists the pass side and vice versa. There is an X style setup where they meet to balance out the drone.

It may not be a "truck" motor, but it sure as hell sounds like one.

Everytime a viper goes by my Dodge buddy yells, "it is a Viper".

I reply, or it might be another UPS truck on a delivery (they sound EXACTLY alike). Hee ,hee.

"Eric: heheh welding those two blocks together creating a v10... that sound about as stupid as dropping a truck engine in a sportscar."

Ahem. A Viper V10 is not a truck motor. >=-|

randall- good for you- you have more patience than i do with stupid people. for some reason i get pissy when someone trys to bs their way to appear knowledgeable. one particular funny incident happened at the bowling alley. a kid, id say somewhere around 16, came up to me and asked me what kind of engine i had in my car. after i told him, he began to lecture me on the various things i did wrong when i built the engine. half of which sounded like advice from a drunk know knothing mechanic. he went on to say how he had gotten ahold of a v6 block and a four cylinder block (hahaha-a v4-right) and how he was going to weld them together and make a v-10 to drop in his dads GTO along with a twelve speed tranny out of a semi rig. he planned to tie the whole thing togther with a crank out of a dodge viper. i just nodded and told him about my quadra-flux capacitor ignition module with the duplex hydraulic auto-clutch activator system that i had installed right after i replaced the quantum acclerator pump. he just looked at me like i was weird and walked away. funny. youd think an engine smart kid like that would know about high tech equipment.

On base about 2 weeks ago I had a guy walk up and start ranting about how nice my Testarossa is (wierd, 'cause it says 308 on the back). Another guy stopped to compare it to his Vette, who seemed to have a lot more knowledge. The Testarossa comment guy went on to say that his friend had a custom ordered Diablo with a V-15. He reinforced that V-15 comment several times, saying how it was so much faster than other Lambos.

I just stood there and bit my tongue until he went away.

Not everyone is a car nut.

I've had my 328 described as "a Tester Rosso" (sic), "a Magnum car", and "what izzit?".

The first day I drove my Ferrari to work, I was accosted by a millwright who demanded to know how I could afford a "better car than the CEO" -- at which point I reminded him that the CEO drives a Buick ... most people have better cars. ;^)

The disturbing one, though, was when I dusted off the old Alfa Spider, and someone at work asked if I had traded the Ferrari in on "another exotic".

How did a people as "car crazy" as Americans come to this?

I remember in grade school a kid was bragging about his mom's Lamborghini but after a look it turned out to be a Renault Gordini. Not the old kind, the 80's kind of POS.

That's like a friend of mine in college. When a girl asked him what kind of car he drove, he would always respond with "a Vette". They were typically impressed not realizing he meant a "Chevette".

All great and funny comments. On the same note, years ago when I was dating my wife, I told her that I drove a Corvair. She thought I was meaning a "Corvette"! Duh!

Besides going down STEEP grades, was moderate braking power neccessary with the outlandish HP rating???

Drove a 86 Fiero GT (2.8 V6) for a while, it had absolutely no breaking power!!! Quite a reliable car though.

One out of every 50 Fieros caught fire. The 2.5 liter engine had a 3 quart sump so if you ran down in oil at all....there was a recall that changed it to 4 liters. My 84 was a great Chicago car as I could park in small spaces and the fiberglass body didn't dent. My wife called it 'Chickie' because there was a Firebird-like logo inside that looked to her like a chicken. It was a heavy (2800 lbs.) and underpowered (96 HP) car but I loved it at the time. In retrospect, except that mine never really broke, it was a POS.

Didn't the Fiero have a little pinto in it? I seem to remember it having a reputation for engine fires and explosions on impact.

By the time GM got to the 88 cars with the better multilink suspension, and V6 motors, the car was pretty good and sorted. Too bad they cancled it half way though 88! :P

With 308 prices so low, the poor cars have almost no point anymore though, sigh.

I bought an 84 Fiero new and sold it in 1994 and it was completely reliable! I put 48k on it and I did need a new clutch and brake rotors but those were at least a little self inflicted. Lots of trim pieces broke though. Very cheap plastic throughout.

There was a small crowd next to my car at a parking lot. One of the guys was the professed "expert". He told all the onlookers "It's not real." At that point I walked up, unlocked the car and got in. As I drove off, I said, "The car may not be real, but the repair bills are."

Keith...I can sympathize with your Fiero ownership.

Owned an '85 for 10 years...and during that time I replaced nearly every part on that car (except the body panels of course). Seemed like every time I drove the car something broke. Spent a lot of money and time getting that car just right (suspension, engine, interior, cooling system upgrades)...it was nearly perfect when I sold it for a measly $2,500 to a co-worker's teenage son...who commenced to drive the car into the ground!!

Funny thing is that my mother still refers to my 308 QV as a "Fiero", and tells everyone she knows that I own one .

My 2nd car was a brand new 84 Fiero. By the time I got done replacing every electrical component in that car including 4 alternators and 7 batteries, I should have bought a Ferrari. Would have cost a lot less.

I had my 308 at a show last weekend and I was just waiting for someone to ask me if it was a Fiero kit car. I wanted to answer, "Yes it is but I put a Ferrari engine in it to make it more realistic". Too bad it didn't happen.

You just can not save people from themselves.

My wife has heard me talk about my new F-Car coming for a month. The bathroom, kitchen, and family room are all covered in Forza magzines, and print outs of various F-Chat links.

She tells all of her friends I am excited about getting my Fiero??

I have a dandy to add to this. One evening I had the Testarossa out and stopped by work to check on a project. I parked near one of the huge bay doors that the shop employees open up for fresh air in the summer. I came out of the office and there was a group of 2nd shift people staring at the back of the car. One lady asked me "is it good on gas?" To which I replied "no-but it's a lot of fun anyway". And another lady who was staring intently at the prancing horse emblem asked "is this that new Mustang there going to make?" I stood there staring at her....shook my head....and told her it's a Ferrari. She had no reaction what-so-ever, definately not a "car person".

I'm sure most here would say the former.:-)

This is a 100% true story. It is really funny or really embarassing, depending on how you look at it:

About 2 months ago, I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of my 355 Spider. My wife told some of her close friends (who are all car buffs, as well as their husbands) that I bought another 2 seater. She described the car and said it was red and she was quite sure the top came down (or came off). She told her friends that I was pretty excited and could hardly wait.

About one week later,we all went out to dinner. Someone said, "have you gotten your car?" I said no they are doing a service to it and it should be here in another 2 weeks. I was a little surprised as that was the end of the car conversation? I REALLY did not care, I just thought it was strange as everyone else would ask me 20 questions.

Another 2 weeks goes by, and we do our bi-weekly dinner ritual. The car subject comes up again. "Has your new car arrived?" asked one of the dinner guests. "Nope", I said it is ON A TRUCK as we speak. This time another gentleman rings in and says, "what kind of mileage does it get?", "I am not sure" I replied. Then the subject changed again. A half hour later the car subject comes up again: "My wife had that EXACT SAME CAR IN COLLEGE, WE DROVE IT EVERY WEEKEND AND NOW MY DAUGHTER DRIVES IT", said one of the guests. Now I am as pissed as I am perplexed. I work may ass off to get a F-355 Spider and they drove the crap of it and then "gave" it to their 16 year old daughter???

The dinner ends and we are sipping coffee. At this point everyone starts to share their weekend plans and I say, " my car comes this Friday, and Saturday we are going to take FERRARI up to the Wine Country in Napa.

All the guest's jaws drop. They say, " you have a Frikkin FERRARI?????"

Your wife said you bought a FIERO! (as in Pontiac).
