Growing up my dad would change the oil every 5000 miles on his cars and he had several go over 100K without any major repairs. Now it is 3000 miles. What is happening? Are the engines running hotter? Are the engines tougher on oils today than yesterday? Or are the oil companies just putting out a crappier product? Is better research available on oil and engine wear?

Normal conditions according to my manual has nothing to do with city driving but more to do with dust and dirt if I remember right. I'll check my manual for the exact wording at lunch.

I would like to see some independent, non-baised research myself to get the real answer to this question.

mitch - can you recommend any sites that do a good job of explaining all the ins and outs of oil weights, wear, and dino -vs- synth and all that jazz?

thanks,
doody.

"Right on my Ota Tacoma engine it says to change the oil every 7250 miles under normal driving conditions."

Ever notice that city driving is NOT included in NORMAL conditions!!! About the only kind of driving that qualifies as (ahem) NORMAL is getting on the interstate and doing 400 miles in a day.

"Yet the oil companies tell me to change it every 3000 miles."

Wear is cubic (m**3) with respect to millage. So the difference between 3000 miles on a batch of oil and 7500 miles is 15.6 times as much wear!!!

"Who do you trust?"

Neither, that why I do my own research and understand the underlying mechanisms of lubrication and wear.

Do you really need to change the oil in an F-Car? It looks like my 348 is going to burn a quart every 1000 miles or so. So the car is constantly getting new oil. All I really need to do is change the oil filter. :-)

I'm kidding of course.

Mark,
It is nice to see a Chevy product with that kind of miles. It restores some of my faith in American engineering.

I used to use Mobile 1 0w-40w, but I kept burning through my turbos (oil cooled turbos)because its so thin. I then used Castrol RS 10w-60w that was great oil never had a problem. But Castrol RS has been changed to 0w-40w like mobile 1. I have been told by the main dealers to use Shell Fully Stynthetic 5w-30w. I know its because of the sponsorship, but I do know all the new Ferarris are on it....

Shell Fully Synthetic in the UK is 5w-30w and all the new Ferarris use it at the main dealers.

Craig,
You beat me to it. My S10 has 325k on it and I don't think it ever got an oil change at less than 15k. Maybe the first one. It gets cahnged twice a year whether it needs it or not :-)

I do change the oil in the ferrari though. I use 15-50 mobil 1 and I have noticed that when I'm pushing it hard, the oil gets hot and the pressure lower than I would like to see it. So 60 weight would help. I think I'm going to add a water/oil heat exchanger to help dump the heat. The 0 or 5 part tells you how fast the oil will get everywhere it needs to be. I've heard on street cars, 90% of engine wear is the result of no oil on start up. It sounds like ferrari doesn't want Enzos to wear themselves out warming up in the garage or loose a rod bearing on the track, so they ask for an oil that helps both. I think I would use what they ask for, JMO

Hans,
On that same Tacoma truck I spoke of earlier I sometimes go 20,000 miles without an oil change. The truck currently has 220K on the odometer and is still going strong. I'm hoping to make 500,000 miles and at this point I fully expect to make it.

Maybe those guys you work around should switch from Chevrocrap to something else. :-)

If you don't believe in frequent oil change (i.e. 3000 miles or less), try getting an oil analysis. Will probably scare you to death.

I work daily around Chevy trucks that have had vastly different maintenance. Some need new engines at 60K. Some come in with 400K+ on the clock. The difference? The 400K trucks get oil changed every 1500 miles. No other maintenance difference. Seriously. I've observed this for 30 years now. Literally 1000's of trucks.

I'm sticking to Mobil 1 at 2500 miles in my decrepid F-V8.

Royal Dutch Shell

They help us race.

Enzo should use Shell.

Thank you.

Mobil one synthetic is just as good as the shell, but $57 cheaper. I'm amazed at how tight Ferrari has a leash around some of your necks. If it's got a ferrari logo on it, buy it because it must be better, no matter what the price is!

I agree with Dr Tommy. Who came up with this idea to change the oil every 3,000 miles?

My TR manual states 6,500 miles between oil changes (I believe).......I change once a year......about 5,000 miles.

Yep it is all about marketing.

How much better can oil get? I mean if you're using Mobil 1 or Redline syn now AND change it regularly, where is the $700 advantage?
Really, how many more miles is that Enzo engine gonna get with that super special oil? How about NONE! It's a marketing ploy, period.
I am not a mechanic but I do know that once you get to a certain point, oil is oil. It can only get so good and I'm betting that it ain't no $55 a quart better then what I am using now. No way.

Matthew,

The 360 are already filled up with Shell 0-60 oil from the official Ferrari dealers here in Germany. This oil is really expensive and as far as I know the best you can get. Guess its also used for the Enzo.

Con saluti cordialissimi,

I just got the most current Car and Driver in the mail. In this issue they test the Enzo. Car and Driver said that 1 quart of oil for the Enzo is $60. What kind of oil cost $60 a quart?
