There is a mention in the article about Irvine owning both a 288 and a 959, but it didn't say he owned this particular 288. It is for sale at Duncan Hamilton, 175.000 GBP http://www.racecarnewmedia.com/duncanhamilton/carsforsale/CarDetails.asp?ID=173

>>there was a GTO at the track event that i was at on wed., the owner said every car there made after 1995 was faster.<< Some quantifiablie figures. Taken from an issue of Classic & Sports Cars (a great rag, by the way). Same issue also had a 959 paired with the 288. 288 GTO 0-60 in 4.8 secs 0-100 in 10.2 secs. 959 0-60 in 3.7 secs 0-100 in 8.8 secs. These are cars built in the 80s! Fantastic performance. The magazine's conclusion: "There's little doubt that the 959 is the better car. It's faster, cleverer, comfier and more refined, and its performance is so accessible that it makes a deep and lasting impression of exceptional ability. But that's making a rational decision, and cars such as these should be chosen with the heart, not the head. It may not be as fast on the road, but in delivering a hit of pure adrenalin to the bloodstream the 288 is more effective than a hypodermic needle. Good news for the fortunate few who are lucky enough to choose between them is that, if they have the funds to buy one, they can probably afford both." Good article overall too. Get the magazine, it's worth the couple of quid (it's a British rag, but available in most U.S. bookstores) they're asking for. Cheers |

Hell yeah DES, that more than any words you've written, echo with me the true Ferrari enthusiest! :D) Now, I've just got to see this picture. The 288GTO... what can I say? This car exemplifies everything Ferrari to me. I burn to cherish {Read: flog one on the track} one as my own with the passion of a thousand suns! Best! Ben. |

Andrew - thank you...! Thank you so much...! i downloaded the one that was in your signature, but i'd really like the high resolution picture... My email address is: [email protected] i was actually hoping you would start or let me start a thread about the picture... i have more questions than just: "can i have a copy...?" It's seriously the most breathtaking photograph i've ever seen... Did you take it...? It looks like a totally professional shot; hands down, it's the best picture i've ever seen in the world, no doubt about it... It is just so intense... No picture i've ever looked at has ever evoked such emotion in me as that one... It's really intense... Can you post it for everyone to see...? Do you mind if i post it...? Would you mind if i posted it in every post, in every thread i post in...? i want a poster of that picture... a huge, huge poster, that won't even fit in my house... i want a full color tattoo on my back, of that picture... Ok, i think i'll shut up, now. Oh, P.S. sorry to take this off topic again... Yeah, yeah, about that 288 GTO...... |

ANdrew, the difference between a 355 & a 288GTO is that the GTO was made to do 100 mph through the dirt sideways |

Im not worried about the speed. Anything that can hit 100 is plenty fast enough for me, but I have to say the 288 is one of the most aggresive looking cars ever made. It is just awesome. |

Thanks a lot for the replies ! Will , i dont know if he's considering one , but im pressuring him to get one.If he is , then i ll get in touch with you to get your buddies email so i can forward them to my dad , Gracias ! After that article in C&SC i must say the GTO is now one in my top 3 Ferrari . It looks soo sexy . About the performance ,thats what i want to know , from what i have read , a GTO should be faster than a 355/360 instraight line performance but of course would be eaten alive on twisty roads. Anyway i still think the car is more than fast to have fun and just to look at it should provide sufficient excitation DES , whats your email so i can mail that pic ? |

My countach is a real pain to wash also as the water gets trapped in the spark plug boots, then when you start the engine the water boils & pops the spark plug wires off . POS |

Mmmmmm. Heidi Klum. I wonder if there would be much performance difference between the 288 GTO and Heidi? I also wonder about reliability in a supermodel. I bet the car would require less maintenance... Things to ponder |

I am with Keith Maxwell here...except for the "testicle" part. For me the 288 GTO is the ultimate car. Although it would be a hard choice, I'd take the GTO over Heidi Klum. |

"practically undestructable"? Well, that German newspaper report sounds different: Had to wrap the engine in plastic each time they washed the car and had to refit all the hoses before it would run. Sounds like they got the Monday morning version of the GTO.

Andrew, I know 2 FCA members with GTO's. I can get you in touch with them if you like. Is this something your father is considering ? AFter the F40 & the Enzo the performance of the GTO will seem a lot less. They were designed to be rally cars and my mechanic says they were built to be "practically indestructable " |

I have the "Auto Motor und Sport" from 1985 with a full test. They were impressed, but this was in the back of the magazine (editorial notes):
(That's in Deutsch!) If you can't afford one, you can build a lookalike:

I have put about 6000 miles on my 288GTO in the last 18 months. The car is a true performance car. I've got about 150 miles on the track. The strong points are the acceleration and the steering; the not so strong point is the brakes. It is easily driven as a daily driver. |

It would have to be better than sleeping with a supermodel - at least you could be assured that fewer guys have been in the 288 GTO |

We all love the 288 GTO's sexy look . But is it a great drive ? How was it ranked back in 1984 ? I bought this month Classic car , and they say the car is very aggressive to drive , very alive .. Anyone here already drove/owned one ?
