"Let" "chicks" drive?

Wait a minute, let me catch my breath. My wife drives HER 355 all over the place. She's gone well into triple digits on the highway, when needed. She drives it on the track, in the advanced group (and passes plenty of people, including quite possibly a couple of people on this board).

Damn, I'm lucky if she lets ME drive.

vty,

Anka, are you saying that I'm ignorant because I employ the thinking that men are naturally better drivers than chicks? (I mean women?),

...........and that I am into myself because I think this way?

............and that because chicks (sorry, women) drive standard transmissioned autos in Europe, South America, Australia, Asia and even Africa, are not considered "chicks" anymore?

...........and that I'm a sexist because I won't let my wife, (that does absolutely nothing for my MY F-car as far as upkeep, reg. fees, insurance, fuel, repairs, washing, garageing, oil changing, 15,000 mile serviceing) drive it?

Then I guess I'm just another one of those "IGNORANT", "SEXIST" pigs out here that need to "GET OVER MYSELF"

I would not now about Chicks
on 4RE's. But what about
Chicks on Sport Bikes ?

I am still trying to get my
wife/Chick to quote a "price"
for her to ride a sport bike
around the block for a cup of
coffee. Soooo Cool.

Chick knows how to drive a stick.
Chick does not like stick. Wants
to sell the pocket German sports
car for another pocket German sports
car with automatic. NO WAY.

Chick is quiet when it comes to
naming a price for riding the
Crotch Rocket.

One Day.

Taek knows what I mean.

My wife is probably a better driver than i am. I tend to be attracted to "competent" people, and as far as the other sex goes, there is that endless duality: tough, but feminine, smart but alluring, etc. Nonetheless, i recognize "chick" as a term of art: usually connotes young, but doesn't carry the pejorative of, say, "bimbo" or even "babe." As to whether its sexist, i'm not so sure. The biggest leach in my office is totally "pc" in outward behavior, but he's a total slut. Part of this is intention, which is difficult to discern on the 'Net.

My wife has a Mas Spyder and she drives it better than most guys I know. As to being "allowed to drive", all of you big deals out there who really believe you "allow" your women to do anything, are sadly delusional. If you are the type of males the thread seems to imply (and this is only for "never" guys out there), you are filled to excess with testosterone and that makes you completely controllable by any woman or "chick" by simply hinting that she may "allow" you to get somewhere with her.

My wife drives the heck out of the Ferrari. Like me, she drives it every chance she gets, and loves it. She can snap off perfect shifts at redline every time. In fact, she does better than most male drivers I know. And I actually enjoy being a passenger once in a while. But she can't cook worth a crap. lol!

And I'm sure Mr. Alpert meant no disrespect to broads... oops, I mean women (oh relax, I'm joking!) It's like calling a man a dude. It's just a slang thing... I'm sure he meant it in the most affectionate manner. Right dude?

Most chicks do.

Hate to welcome some to reality, but this is not Europe, Australia, or South America... 95% of the women on the road in the US have no idea how to operate a stick shift short of watching someone do it... this also goes for 50% of men. Most people in this world dont share the same passion for cars that we do, but the ones who do are the majority of the 5% of women, and the other 50% of men. Is it being sexist, not really its being realistic, have I let girls drive my car, yes I have(the motives behind aside :-) ) end of the day they are all still cars and can be fixed, as long as they dont get wrecked.

I mentioned how my wife drove my 328 for the first time recently on another thread, but I think that was before you joined, Mike. She loves it, and I'm all for it. She's not the type of person who is intimidated very easily--the only reason she was hesitant to drive the Ferrari was due to the fact that we live in a big city and she's all too familiar of the "joys" of driving in such an environment. I respect Anka's stand against the derogitory use of "chicks", but I think the attention people bring on themselves through their choice of words does more for their image than any protest another person could make.

Just noticed that you joined F-chat a few days ago - Wow already stirring up trouble.
By that I mean, what exactly do you think makes me a pus-sy? Do you think having an opinion and a different point of view makes me that, if so I guess you should go around and call everyone here a pus-sy then - See how you are liked here after that.

My wife refuses to drive the Ferrari. Doesn't care if its an F1 or stick, won't drive it. Period. Likes to go for a ride in the car, but refuses.

Same thing about the plane. I offered her lesssons, told her that for safety, she should learn, refuses.

Could be a generational thing.

Women don't drive Ferraris because they're afraid of getting treetrunk gastrocnemius (j/k). The F1, on the other hand, is suitable for all genders. We need more female Ferrari drivers/owners to balance the ying/yang of this site.

There are *some* women out there that I'd let shift my stick...

Actually, have let many of the fair sex do the deed behind the wheel, all across the board(which is to be expected); some not a clue, some pretty hot(drivers, that is...).

Of all the people I've let drive my 328, the one who fit most natural(was really sumpin' to see, slipped behind wheel, acted like she was born there) was a lady friend of mine who'd driven mainly clunkers all her life. Little explanation on matching revs, keep the revs way up, and WE WERE GONE.

Of course what you said is more than correct. That said some women, like my wife has no interest in driving my cars. She drives anything she wants (She's trading her BMW 750 for a Turbo Cayanne). My daughter is a different matter. Even though she's only 14 she loves cars and there's no question that she'll be driving mine when the time is right and she's learned how to control 550HP. As she's already to control a one horse power hunter jumper I'm sure she'll do fine. My son likes cars but he doesn't love them. Funny things kids.

First off, I don't even get the reason for this thread. Michael, do you need to know if all men out there are as sexist as you are? Or is it just so that you have the peace of mind of knowing that you are not the only one who "doesnt let the wife drive the car"? - To quote DES; "Nice"
This thread is beyond stupid and pointless, nevertheless I felt like expressing my point of view. I don't get this whole concept of some men "allowing the wife to drive a car" - what is this the middle ages? And this carp or obsession about how women can't drive a manual - in case you didnt notice the whole of Europe, South America, Australia, Asia and even Africa drives mostly manual cars. Not to mention, nobody there thinks that driving a stick is out of the ordinary - get with the times. I've lived and been in Europe many times and only is it in North America that a lot of men think that being able to operate a manual vehicle is the men's domain and beyond the womens scope of understating. As though women are not capable to mastering the art of shifting. Its funny but learning to drive a manual was not exactly the most difficult thing Ive done in my life. Learning to dive a manual is relatively easy, mastering it on the other hand is the more difficult part. A lot of people automatically think if they can operate a manual transmission that means they operate it well - thats B.S.. Any bozo can lean to shift; its how when and the finesse with which one shifts is the key. Ive been diving manual for many years; through those years Ive insisted learning techniques from books and race car drivers to more efficiently and effectively use the engine/transmission to my advantage.
To conclude, for those men out there that employ this kind of ignorant thinking GET OVER YOURSELVES!!!!

I'm reminded of the other problem... the shift pattern is different in the 348 than the Accord. This worries her being a beginner on a manual.

Honda:
1 3 5
2 4 R

348:
R 2 4
1 3 5

Course you all knew that already. :-)

My other half routinely drives a manual. When I first got the GT4, she wanted to drive, but after seeing me go thru various gymnastics (as James mentions below), and the rather constant shifting you do to keep the revs "just right", she now refuses.

Try to get my wife to drive, but when I told her she'd have to take "lessons" first, she balked. Both our cars are standard, but there are subtle things you have to know about the 308 (1st to 3rd shifting early in the drive, letting the fuel pump run, , ...)

This is such a ridiculously sexist question, it's not even funny...

i'm assuming you're using the word 'chicks' to refer to women... Nice...

There are some "chicks" out there who i would beg to drive my car, if i had one worth driving...

The Bird, for example. Her very first time driving a stick, she did very well... If i ever get a Ferrari before she learns how to drive a stick; she'll drive it as soon as she learns... i tell her everything i read on here that she doesn't, so she can know just as much as i do (not that i know much)... She rarely looks in this section so i know she won't check this thread, so i have no problem admitting that when it comes to driving, she's got bigger balls than i do, especially in the twisties...
i don't know if it just feels different, 'cause i'm in the passenger's seat or 'cause it's a Corolla, but time and time again, she pulls off some very hairy driving... She'll go into a 25mph turn at 50 and i'm thinking: "Well, this is it... my thigh is wider than her tires; there's no way she'll hold this turn... Mr. Corolla...? Say hello to Mr. Tree or Mr. Guardrail.." and she pulls it off... i'm secretly dying to find a sports car and let her drive it... Here i thought i was some would-be racecar driver and i've learned from her... From some chick...

So, no, i don't "let her" drive... i look forward to it.

I would love to let my wife drive my car, but she doesn't drive stick...

Many years ago, while we were still dating, I tried to teach her stick. Well, one day we were going out, and I needed to push start my car out of a parking spot (yes, it was an italian car). Wanting to be a gentleman, I told her to get in the car, and I would push it. Well, I pushed it backwards, she let go of the clutch, and in her nervousness, slammed on the gas pedal. Bam, into another parked car.

Now she is afraid to drive stick.

I would like to get her to take a formal drivers-ed class to learn stick (maybe I'm not the best teacher). She said she would do it, but I don't know of any local classes that would teach stick shift. It seems like everyone teaches on an automatic now.

I would let my girlfriend but she is just learning to drive a manual and she wants to get better at it first.

But when she is ready I'll definitely let her drive it. Maybe then she'll understand my passion (obsession) for the car.
