Mike,

Call Classic Coach at (908) 352-3939. They have a large inventory of NOS OEM Ferrari mufflers. Ask for Rocco.

Well, I haven't had any luck in finding an exhaust.

Anybody have one to sell? Their old stock exhaust? I'll trade you for a cracked rear header :-).

Seriously--if you have any leads on an exhaust, I'd be very interested.

BTW, I did indeed fix what caused the meltdown--ignition coil failure (which caused the cats to melt and clog up). It happened on two new coils, though. Shortly after the repair, the alternator completely failed--which is now what I believe might have caused the (new) ignition coil failures.

Matt & Dave-

I doubt that Ansa (or any other manuf) was using SS for mufflers back in '78.

I just went down to the garage now and put a magnet on the muffler and no attraction (possible SS?). Now I'm not so sure. I still don't think that the OEM mufflers were SS, but I don't want to dig the muffler out of the shelving unit to find out. I thought the mufflers were mild steel. No rust in a 25 year old muffler does not constitute SS (but if it isn't, that's pretty impressive). Now I'm not sure.

Mike-

I hope you have corrected the misfire or whatever that caused your meltdown?

Henry,

Mine is a SS Ansa. Not aftermarket. I confirmed with the P.O.

I agree with Dave it's not polished but no rust.

Any idea what the ANSA pictured below would cost retail?

Mike,

I'm pretty partial to the ANSA exhaust myself. I have an older model ANSA on my '76 GTB as you pictured in your post yesterday:

The current ANSA Sport system (non-stainless) is very similar:

Check ANSA's website at:

Mike -- I think you're OK on both counts -- i.e., '78 US and '79 US 308B/S having the same exhaust system, and that (non-stainless) ANSA system bolting directly to the headers. Here's a shot of an assembled stock '78/'79 B/S system:

I ran that same ANSA on my ex-'78 US S.

Here's a picture of the exhaust system from the 78 308 GTS parts manual...

Somebody help me out here... As best as I can tell, the long straight pipe on the left (on the ANSA exhast pictured below) will connect directly to the front header. The short curved pipe on the right would connect to the rear header...

This exact exhaust that's pictured (it's used) was previosuly installed on a US-Spec 79--I assume the connections work out?

Stay away from Stebro. Their delivery is always like playing craps. They are Stainless but rather then. I had to put in extra insulation to keep the mufflers from vibrating. Also the fit was no bueno... needed a lot of help. Overall if I had it to do again it would be ANSA OEM

Henry,
Are you sure? I pulled the stock exhaust off my 78 308 GTS to install ss test pipes, and that sure looked like ss. Not highly polished or anything, but not a lick of rust anywhere. My mechanic confirmed to me that he thought it was ss too.

Back in November, I had a little "meltdown" of sorts, where I lost a bank, melted a cat, and cracked a header. We're thinking that the apparent damage to the muffler was related to this episode.

A major symptom is a huge differential in the airflow between the left set of exhaust tips and the right...

MIke-

Did your mechanic say how the system became clogged? I'm curious. BTW, the stock muffler on a '78 were not SS, just the tips.

Does your car have 2 cats? I have a U.S. '78 GTS and my stock muffler is slightly different. It has two inlets that are both curved like the shorter of your inlets. My 2 cats mate directly to the inlets of the muffler.

77 = no cats;; 78 = cat(s). I believe the input pipes into the muffler line up differently for the 2 years.

Matt, thanks for the advice. I still need to do a lot of thinking and analysis before I make any moves.

There are emissions, but are fairly relaxed for 1978 standards, and even without cats the HC ppm, when tuned right, is passable.

Peter,

I'm not sure if a 77 Euro will work... I think the euros had a different header / exhaust configuration...

Here's an example on an ANSA part that will fit a 78/79 US Spec 308 GTS. It is the same shape as my current exhaust. Note the two inputs into the muffler, and four output pipes (exhaust tips).

Peter,

is your single or dual tip?

Mike,

If NM has a strict smog certification, being Euro, it might not work.

Hi Mike

In about three weeks, you can have mine. Its off my '77 Euro if that would work. I am getting a custom exhaust built, so I will not need it. What would a fair 'FChat Member' price be?

Mike,

Our cars came with a SS ANSA. Get a second opinion.

My 78 308's exhaust is apparently coming apart and/or clogged, says my mechanic.

Just wanted to see if anyone had any leads on a possible replacement. Perhaps a good quality stock exhaust, or a slightly used aftermarket one--ANSA, Stebro, Tubi, or Borla.

Thanks,

--Mike
