OK, a Porsche owner sans Ferrari here...

I recently purchased a Turbo and reliability my ass. Drove the friggin' thing home and the next day it's on a flatbed back to the dealership because of a faulty fuel pump. Great. The C4 Cabrio I had before was a workhorse but the fit and finish was crap. At high speed there was a lot of noise coming in through the windows. Going over a lot of hills and stuff eventually got my car creaking in about four different areas.

The only reason I haven't bought a Ferrari is because I'm always late on the line, I don't know which one I like the most and I can't find the one car I've decided I want.

Mind you I'm kicking myself every day when I realize that for the price of the Turbo I could have gotten an F512M my buddy found for me.

So, Dario, I did what you did. I wanted a daily driver and bought my Turbo. But truth is, I would rather have a Ferrari. And if this car keeps up with ridiculous problems right out of the showroom (new car), I'm getting rid of it and taking the plunge. I should've gotten a pre cat 930 Turbo if anything.

Cheers

Whart--My Toro is stock (rossa over black), but I bought a ToroChallenge conversion kit. PZero plastic wheels, racing axle and carbon fiber handle grip. It looks like a real Challenge, but only the trained eye can tell the difference.

"WHAT IS THE POINT OF THIS RIDICULOUS THREAD?!"

Please select one or more of the following:

I'm bored. I'm lonely. I have repressed feelings of rage because I feel powerless. I want attention. If only I'd stuck with [whatever - music, art, sports], I coulda been rich 'n famous. I'm completely impotent. I'm losing my hair. I hope to leverage my posts into a talk show. I am not sure if I want to be a man or a woman. I really, really like to hear myself talk. I've never met you, but I know I could kick your smug ###. You've got cooler stuff than me, but I have irony. I have really interesting opinions. I am a rare wanker.

Just have to say that having had both P and F cars they both have there problems, the F costs a small fortune in servicing and disolves when it even see water!, the P on the other hand doesnt rust, it does dump the contents of its sump regulary, the electrics have a mind of its own and as for the clutch and flywheel problems..... think this post should be " there is about the same percentage of P car garage Queens as F cars its just that Ferrari don't make 10's of thousands each year"

David,
"Who ever heard of replacing a steering rack?".

You're right about that. Most non-power racks are 95% perfect and they only need a repair to restore the correct clearance at the tie rod end.

I hope you get your car back soon.

If we take in the five senses that humans have...........then Ferraris look better than P-cars, they smell better (connolly leather), they sound better, they feel better (to the touch, both interior and exteriorly), and if you could eat them, the Ferrari would probably taste better too:-) Ferraris, driven or un-driven just spark more of these senses in humans (both men and women) than a P-car ever could!

Richard,
Nice, keep it up and drive the stink out of that car and enjoy!

Jack, I'm stuck here because by sh*tbox Ferrari is in the shop getting a new steering rack! Who ever heard of replacing a steering rack? Well, very common on the 308/328 series. Anyway, I still love the cars (and my car) just the same, but have to enjoy them vicariously through guys like Richard and this friggen List for now... :-)

Real 911 owners think your 996 is a poseur POS also, unworthy of a the 911 name, you can't take them to the track as they have oil starvation problems unlike the air cooled dry sump models, the engines sound like Hondas and are disposable, the 996 dash interior reminds of a Ford Taurus and they are difficult to tell apart from the wannabe Boxter.

I have seen far more poseurs in 996s particularly women drivers, and how could Porsche whore its name to make a SUV? Ferry would never have allowed it.

Porsche has always been one of my favorite makes until Ferry left and the bean counter stock market executives took over and decided to stop racing so they could build a SUV, I have no respect for their company now

I've got a 2000 Toro snowblower, but I avoid using it as much as possible. She's definitely my low-mileage garage queen. I'm a bit of a snobbish "Toro-ista", but I'm protecting its re-sale value. Therefore, everytime it snows, I prefer to shovel. During the summer, I make sure to start it up and let it idle once a week, and I push it around the garage. WHAT IS THE POINT OF THIS RIDICULOUS THREAD?! 911 Fan--I'm very proud of you. If you're such a f***ing fan of your car, then why the hell are you sitting in front of your computer on a saturday afternoon lampooning Ferrari owners, instead of out on the damn road driving and enjoying your car?! Now, I'm on my way downtown to take in a Ferrari display on Oak Street...

I only work 3 miles from my home. The beast does not warm up in that short of a period. Therefore I drive a throw away car during the week. On weekends, it is the beast. In the past year it has gone to Las Vegas, San Francisco, and San Diego twice. Next month it is back to Las Vegas. It also takes me to the mountains and the dessert.
I did put on about 9,000 miles in the past year.
I agree the guys who have garage queens are idiots. Why hurt the car by not driving it? It needs to be exercised.

"How many ferrari owners go to Porsche and NSX sites and claim that their owners are poseurs or that their cars suck?"

Excellent point - I can only add that, as a longtime Porsche owner and frequenter of Porsche sites, I'd observe that Porsche owners are too busy accusing each other of being poseurs to really notice Ferrari interlopers - they just don't seem to need our help to get started:

924/944/968 v 911?
356 v 911?
Air cooled v water cooled?
928 v 911?
Cayenne?
Boxster made in Finland?
And on and on ....

I am deeply upset that someone might think I am a poseur, or that my car is a POS, I may not sleep at all tonight.

911 guy,

It takes far less miles in a Ferrari to give thrills that last, and last..unlike the boring Porsches that no matter how many miles you put on them one still ends up with Ferrari envy.

911 Fan,

Porsches are very utilitarian and lend themselves well to routine driving situations.
My preference is to drive my performance car the way it was meant to be driven and so you won't see me driving mine to the supermarket, Blockbuster, Home Depot or to work. You WILL see me driving it to and at track events and on high speed runs on desolate roads in the early morning. PS. Are 911 fans the ones that blow hot air? Do you really have a 360??

And Dario,
I'm relatively new to this chat-line thing; so what does "POS" mean? As near as I can figure, it stands for Porsche On Steroids. How am I doing?

Check out the photo on my profile. My 512TR gets more track miles than road miles every year :-) So much for being a poser or garage queen :-)

I understand what you are getting at. I remember the story of that schmuck who bought an F40 back around 92 or so & put it in his living room next to his piano & never drove it. DUmbazz

Yes, in hindsight, I should have left off that last sentence in the initial post - it was needlessly inflammatory and I should have known better. I certainly didn't want to offend anyone -- my apologies...

But my question still stands.

I just find it hard to understand why cars that are so much fun to drive are not driven more often by their owners.

I can understand extremely low mileage if a car is part of a large collection or if it is enjoyed primarily on a track.

But I'm guessing that most F-cars are owned by people like me who really enjoy driving and who have worked their way up through Corvettes, 911s, etc. to finally reach their dream Ferrari. And I'm betting that most of these owners would like nothing better than to get out on a nice winding road in their F-cars - at least once a week. If nothing else, they'd look for some excuse to drive them around closer to home.

Yet most of the F-cars that I see on the resale market have ridiculously low mileage. I refuse to believe they're all messing with their odometers! So why is there such a reluctance to get out there and drive?

Just to chime in...

I don't really care whether you guy's drive your F-cars or not, it's your loss not mine that such a beautiful and "thrill to drive car" would ever sit in anyone's garage ...

I, on the other hand, do see the arguement that: I would rather stare at my Ferrari in the garage than to try and drive it and end up staring at it for months in the shop?? I do enjoy supercars and I want to alway's have one available (don't have garage room for two) Sooo I drive a RELIABLE Porsche, not knocking you guys, the Ferrari is beautiful and having driven one it is an experience, but the facts remain that a Ferrari is a ... POS!!!

I think Ferrari, NSX, Porche are not practical car but sports car. I owned 911 for about 5 years, and I learned that I couldn't take it to shopping, golfing, nor business purpose. I had SUV or a sedan for those occasions.
Unless you are using these car for commute, chances are cars will stay in a garage longer. If you care for a car, you keep it in a garage, right? If you are family man, chances are you drive another big car for week-end outing with family. That leaves relatively small amount of time for sports cars. So it may look "a garage queen". But still owners try to find time to enjoy these sports cars for driving, and those people should be called "enthusiasts". What car is driven doesn't define "enthusiast", but attitude is.

Maybe there aren't as many as people think. If you have an F-car and only drive it on weekends (Sat and Sun) say 80 miles total per weekend on avg. And you don't use it every weekend(weather ect.) say you only use it 35 weekends a year then thats only 2800 miles a year. But, if you had a really bad winter or the car was in for service this number would go even lower or how about if you had another sports car to drive. So there might be fewer garage queens then you might think these cars just aren't driven that often.

What is a posuer anyway?

I don't track my car, but do take it out for excursions on twisty roads with other F-car friends. But, I also drive my car to the market, Costco, bookstore and whatever other errands I have on the weekends...does that make me a poseur?

Just wondering....

BTW, more of my F-car friends seem to track their cars than people I know who own P-cars. But of course, I know a lot more P-car owners...they make a hell of a lot of them.

HUmmmm.. having owned two porsches in the past ( a 911SC and a 930Turbo)I can answer this thread with a certain amount of confidence. The Porsche's were always fun to drive but never gave me the same thrill. They are actually very pedestrian in nature. Thats not an insult it's a fact. There is a certain magic about Ferrari that I can demonstrate with a true story:
I was with a close friend that was a Corvette fanatic. After another discussion about the virtues of the plastic Bowtie I decided to taek him with me to Shelton in Lauderdale. We looked at a 512TR and without me saying a word he commented " Man.... this is something special". Once he sat in it and drove it he was sold. All the way home all I heard was how amazed he was. Seems he had never even been close to a Ferrari. He still loves his C5 Vette... but is planning on adding an F car.

If it comes to it, I suppose there is probably a "poseur" in most mortal souls.

It is also possible that the biggest poseur is the one who does not admit it, but condemns others for it.

The NSX is a great car, no doubt, but it is a Ferrari wanna be, through and through. I'm glad Honda made them, I do believe it put pressure on Ferrari to try and improve thier performance and quality. The NSX just isn't for me.

Do I need to explain why, and how often, I drive my own car?

Is there a rule that Ferraris are only fit for a certain selected category of people, and other "lesser mortals" therefore must be a disgrace to the marque for daring to even think of owning one?

What is the friggen point of ownership otherwise? Just to brag to friends you have a Ferrari in your garage???? Or to walk out to the garage and look at it and wax it? For all the talk about how wonderful Ferraris are to drive and how they're so much better than Porsches and NSXs, there are an awful lot of Ferrari garage queens out there.

I just don't get it.

I'm enjoying my first Ferrari (a brand new 360) and it's definitely NOT a garage gueen!

Sadly, it appears that the typical Porsche or NSX owner is a genuine driving enthusiast, while the typical Ferrari owner is just a poseur...
