I got the Mustang remark again the other day leaving church. I overheard one of the kids say as I was leaving.. "Cool Mustang!". I'll straighten him out next Sunday.

"The law required car bumpers to withstand a 5mph impact, but the Bricklins could take a 20mph impact with little to no damage." It's true that the "Bricks" were way ahead of their time when it came to passive safety features. The cars were equipped with side-impact beams in the doors, built-in roll cages, and 5 MILE PER HOUR BUMPERS, which far exceeded the standards of the time. Even today, though most companies are using bumpers that will withstand a 5 MPH impact, federal law only requires that they be rated to 2 1/2 MPH. |

I was driving my (16 year old) baby sitter home one night and came up on the back of a new 360. I made a comment along the lines of 'beautiful, she asks if that was a mustang, when I was done chocking I told her no, that is a Ferrari 360; it is $200K a mustang is 20K she replied oh, they both have horses. And there is where the similarity ends..they both have horses. Now when I was 16, and I saw an fcarit was like there was nothing else on the road. Joel

You would be amazed at how many times I have been asked at a gas station if my 550 is the "new Vette" or the upcoming "C6 Corvette". After a while, I started playing along & saying "yes, it is". They'd ask em questions like "what motor's it got?", and I'll tell them "the V-12" and they say "WOW! Wil that be an option??". I reply, "I can't tell you any more. I am on a cross-country shake-down drive of a preproduction prototype" or something like that, and all I get is a knowing nod in return. Very amusing... |

Anthony...Malcom Bricklin was a successful business man who made cars for a couple of years. He wanted it to be the safest car on the road, and named the car the SV-1 (Safety Vehicle One) They were plastic bodies cars that kinda looked like a 308, 300ZX, and a Mazda RX7 all rolled up into one. The law required car bumpers to withstand a 5mph impact, but the Bricklins could take a 20mph impact with little to no damage. They used Ford motors I believe. The performance was actually quite good for the day. Fit and finish was horrible on the ones I've seen. They are a rare sight now a days. They are a real underdog, but I kinda like 'em. |

Lee, I"m amazed that someone who even knows a damn thing about the Bricklin has trouble telling it from a Ferrari. I saw one several years ago at a car meet. Talk about the ugliest, most ill-concieved POS. Guy said if anything broke, it was six months down-time minimum. |

Oh, yeah, and my best question yet at a gas station..."Is that a Ferrari or a Bricklin?" No joke. |

Yeah, here in Tennessee I race Mustangs at red lights every now and then. And as I watch their taillights disappear in front of me as their monstrous, new, powerful V8 trounces my little 25-year old 3 liter, I think to myself happily, "Thank GOD I'm not driving that piece of sh**!" |

I had the hatch open and was showing my 360's engine compartment to a friend in a restaurant parking lot after lunch today. Three 20-somethings walked up to us. One gal asked "Is that the new Mustang?". I couldn't resist: "Yeah, how do you like it?". Her male friend turned to her and said "See...told ya!". They walked around the front, checking things out. Finally, one of them read the badge and exclaimed the inevitable: "IT'S A FERRARI!". The horror...

They confuse Mustangs with Ferraris because some of the Mustangs had TRX wheels too. |

Craig....The story of the prancing horse is simple and fascinating. The horse was painted on the fuselage of the fighter plane flown by Francesco Baracca, a heroic Italian pilot who died on Mount Montello. He was the Italian ace of aces of the First World War. In 1923, when he won the first Savio circuit, which was run in Ravenna, Enzo met Count Enrico Baracca, the pilot's father, and subsequently his mother, Countess Paolina. One day she said to Enzo, "Ferrari, why don't you put my son's prancing horse on your cars,it would bring you luck." He so did. The horse was black and has remained so.

Ferrari is a Mustang? Come on... it is clear that Ford chose a "running horse" while Ferrari chose the "prancing horse". And I think Enzo had the horse thing long before Ford.

True dialogue from about 5 years ago. Passenger in Mustang GT convertible in CAPS (he was yelling over my Tubi) and me in my 355 Spider, after I pull up next to him at a light before the highway after following him for a couple of miles. "GODDAMM! WHAT IS THAT, A LOTUS?" "No, it's a Ferrari." "A WHAT?" "A FERRARI." (me) "A FERRARI, HUH? I COULD HERE THAT THING WINDING UP ALL THE WAY DOWN MAIN STREET! GODDAMM! IS IT FAST?" "It's not bad." "WELL, LET'S JUST SEE WHAT THIS LITTLE AMERICAN V8 CAN DO TO YOUR FERRARI!" "Alright." "BUT YOU GOTTA GIVE US A HEAD START IN THAT SH*T!" "You got it." So I gave him a big head start, but needless to say, it didn't last very long! |

Had a funny event the other day. Reminded me how often the general public has no clue what they are seeing. In traffic with some friends that are not car people I spotted a Ferrari. Pointing it out to them I mentioned it was an F car. One of my passengers corrected me by saying " thats not a Ferrari.. it's a Mondial. It says so right on the rear end". After laughing for a few I recalled how often I have overheard comments calling Esprits Lambroghinis and Diablos Ferrari's. I guess we are still a pretty small part of the general public. |
