DJ, The clutch chatter is not a problem. The lack of any low end torque on the other hand, is! I am not unhappy with the clutch as much as the flywheel or should I say lack of a flywheel! I have driven the car a few more times and maybe I am getting better, I may learn to live with it. I have a friend in Dallas with the same set up on his F40, he tells me to live with it a while, I may learn to like it. I will take his advice for a while... Chris |

The Tilton is a great clutch setup. If you can get it for a Ferrari at 5K then thats a great deal. As stated earlier do you get a lot of chatter from the lighten flywheel? |

Chris, I live in Tallahassee, about 2.5 hours from Destin. Let me know how long you'll be there. We go to Destin for the day to hit the beach, bars, and for my wife...the shops. Very cool place! |

Rob; Does Tilton have an e-mail address? I'm considering options on a Boxer clutch that needs replacement. Thanks |

quote:Tilton carbon-carbon clutch! The carbon clutch will outlast the car and it costs the same...
I agree with this opinion completely. I did the first Tilton F40 install in 1999, a triple plate 7 1/4" with their flywheel and OEM injection triggers. Did not need to modify the T.O. bearing. Tilton still has the drawings. The clutch includes a spacer ring to be installed at the half-life of the clutch, which should be years and years of racing. |

Chris thanks for the # & the compliment I saw an article in Forza I believe where a guy had an LM hood made up for an F40 he saved from the crusher & restored into a race car. It was a recent issue |

Chris, you should have got a Tilton carbon-carbon clutch! The carbon clutch will outlast the car and it costs the same as the set-up that you bought. I looked at the clutch that you have and was turned off by the fact that it was metallic. You can slip the C-C clutch without damage and the cost for the entire assembly is about 5K. This way you can have the light flywheel and the driveability. Better technology and a better durability. How loud are the gears? If you want an LM hood, I talked to a guy that Roland recommended and he can do the hood and extractor for about 8K. I was going to do it myself but I am currently too busy. I thought that we could get a few made at the same time and maybe spread out the cost. These would be made to fit a stock width car. If you are interested call me at (512) 689-4169 when you can. |

Just curious, how much chatter do you get from the light flywheel? Is it to the point of being obnoxious? A friend did the same thing in another car (stock 28lbs stock, 12.6lbs now) - and that thing is annoying as all hell. 17 isn't 12.6, but it's not far... --Dan PS: He streets his car as well. Granted two different beasts... |

William, You and Jon were the primary individuals I thought might be interested in this story. I got the flywheel from Carobu Engineering, Tate Casey is the owner and he is great to work with.. His telephone number is 949 722 9307, tell him you are friend of mine, I am not sure that my flywheel would fit your car, but he can make one that will fit. This flywheel is perfect for the track, I drove the car again today and it is scarey fast, I did ok with the take offs today, but I was not in heavy traffic. William, you will love this flywheel, you are an excellent driver and will be able to take full advantage of it! Chris |

"It must be a rocket !!" Andrew, Chris gave me a ride in his car a few months back and I can confirm it was a rocket before he did all clutch and gear work! At least, that's what I told everyone I know next day! Chris, I may call you this week and take you up on the ride offer at Mid America, if I can get away for a day. |

Ernie, We are just under 580hp at the flywheel, 500hp at the rearwheel... I have not talked to Roland about this as he is getting ready for Le Mans, he is in France testing for the entire month of June, before he races at Lemans. |

this is a public service announcement.... As some of you know, over the last year we have attempted to enhance the performance on our F40. We have had excellent and measurable improvements through each step. As you will recall, in the last year we performed the following: Tubi competition exhaust, K&N filters, Carobu Chips, LM Turbo's, Brembo brakes, dual race master cylinders, Koni adjustable coilovers, 18" rims, street slicks etc... With the above work the car was transformed and even more streetable, but with big improvements on the track. We just installed new straight cut drop gears with a 9% gear reduction, this closed the ratio's, dropping about 20mph off the top end, but providing a significantly more usable gear box. A problem that did show itself was the stock clutch, it simply was not prepared to handle the increase in horsepower. We just installed a new race clutch, this one is rated for 750 ft lbs of torque, more than enough to handle the F40. This is a semi metallic clutch (feels like full metal to me!) so it is either in or out, no in-between so you gotta learn the clutch thing all over again! I like it, but it is a bit extreme. The bad news, I also installed a lightweight fly wheel, 17lbs instead of the stock at 34 lbs. The positive side of this is instant throttle response, it is incredible! It completely changes the sound and character of the car, I do love that part of it. The bad part? The car is EXTREMELY difficult to drive in traffic, when you remove weight from the flywheel, you remove the inertia needed to move the car from a dead stop, ever wonder why you see a 1,000hp car needing to be pushed out of the pits to get going? Well a very light flywheel is the cause. I will see if I can master this flywheel, but I suspect it is going to look better on the wall of my shop than it does inside of that bell housing! I feel comfortable in saying that the stock flywheel with the race clutch is the way to go. I thought a few of you might find this interesting.... Chris |
