David, it was low-key, surprisingly. I had been to the dealer once already as part of my research (and also to 2 other dealers to see & sit in 550's to make sure I could fit, since I am 6' 4" tall). When I made the decision to order, I did not make an appointment--just drove down there (they are 75 miles away) and found the sales guy I had met with before. I told him why I was there, and he went to fetch his order forms & the separate wooden cases containing the paint samples (on curved aluminum panels 6" x 8"), carpet samples (mounted side by side on the bottom of a flat tray-like wood case), and leather samples (wrapped around 2" square wood blocks). We went through all of the selections I needed to make, as well as extra-cost options I needed to decide on, such as caliper colors, Daytona seats, 250-style quilted leather rear shelf, spare tire, fitted luggage, Fiorano handling package (which I now regret not ordering...), fire extinguisher, etc etc etc. When we were done, I gave them a $5,000 deposit and received a copy of my order sheet. And that was it! Ironically, that day (my 9th wedding anniversary), the dealer was delivering its first 360 Modena, and I got to see the delivery process as well, purely by coincidence. The new owner of that vehicle (now, sadly, personally bankrupt) also owned a 550 (among many other cars), so I got to spend a few minutes with him alone, asking him about the car & the dealer. And then I drove the 75 miles back to work, and celebrated that night, our anniversary, with my wife. |

David-I was exactly where you are only 30 years ago. It took me 48 years of living to purchase one. Your priorities are great and in line. There are alot of young owners who have beaten me to ownership by 20 or more years. Good luck and keep dreaming. Try and find some old Magimum PI episodes to watch. |

When I ordered my 328, there *did not* appear to be much in the way of options...didn't want/care about radio(which it didn't come with & still doesn't have), only things to decide were colors. However, a yr or so after having gotten my car and having been told all you could do was specify exterior/interior colors, I was miffed to find ads for leather headliners, non-black dashes, etc. I'd inquired about some of this stuff and had been told no way. SO, what i'd recommend to you is that you dig a LOT and find out EVERY option available(Ferrari today allows much more customization than back then), and once you figure out EXACTLY what you want, ride the dealer's butt until you get it ALL in writing, and hold them to it. Also, stay in touch w/dealer to see when your car is scheduled to be built, and as that time approaches, have the dealer doublecheck w/Ferrari in Maranello(not just FNA) to be sure it's all correct. You'll probably have to fork over a deposit; just do it and get a receipt :o) May be other goodies to consider, but that's all i know of; good luck. |

Have the truck unload it in your driveway sounds pretty cool too. I'm sure there was problem with traffic being backed up |

The trick might be to go to the factory to do it, if they permit it, with delivery through your local dealer. I assume they still have a European delivery program, even though i have heard a number of horror stories about ferraris being stolen a day or so after being picked up at the factory. Then there are the wonderful old stories about dignitaries, politicians, celebrities, etc. being forced to wait around, and being dicked around, by enzo and his gang, in the old days, waiting to take delivery. May be, on the other hand, it would be nicer to go through the local dealer after all.... When i took delivery of my current F car, the dealer did the delivery to my house; it was great fun watching the car come down the street on the back of a trailer and watching it get unloaded. |

Well that's somewhat disapointing. I was expecting a big "to-do" about it. The reason I say it will be 20 years is a car is not because I think it will be impossible for me to afford one until then, but that cars are not my first priority right now. I am married, and when I graduate college in a year w/ a degree in Business Management, I want to start a career. I want my MBA before I'm 30, hopefully earlier, and I want to buy my wife a home she can be proud of. All of these things will have to come before a car, and of course I want to be certain I will be able to provide for my children's college, etc, also. I *know* I will own a 360 one day. It may be 20 years from now, but I WILL own a 360. I truly love that car. It is the most beautiful object ever created by man. I hope to own a new Ferrari one day as well, but the 360 will be the first. |

david - visit your local dealer. you can see all the paraphernalia they use for an order - it's all usually out in the open. it's just a car. it's ordered like most others. the enzo included a "fitting" in maranello (if you wanted), but that's clearly the exception, not the rule. doody. |

David: "...I suspect it will be 20+ years before I order my own..." You never know, it could be sooner. I had always dreamed of getting one. I made it true when I was 24... ...Okay, so its only a GT4 and it was well used, but it still has a prancing horsey on the front! |

What's it like? Believe me, I envy those of you who are able to purchase ANY Ferrari. I look forward to the day I can do that. But I want to know what it is like to order one. I assume you call ahead and set up an appointment. Do they bring out leather samples and paint samples. Are there any cool options? (Daytona seats, stuff like that) This is just so I can live vicariously through you until such a time as I can afford my own Ferrari (21 year old college student now). I suspect it will be 20+ years before I order my own, so humor me now please. |
