I like a shift lever too, however we are the dinosaurs. We'll die out and the next generation will all use paddle shifters. We also don't have the joy of a crank to start our cars, the joy of manual windshield wipers in the rain, the joy of no air conditioning (well, SOME of us still enjoy that pleasure! LOL)....T The fact we have a dying skill doesn't bother me in the least. Let our children have paddle shifters, they're better technology so they SHOULD have them. In he mean time, I'll toe and heel and keep my left foot in the game. |

From what I have heard a nice manual is still better with a good driver. AM's Vanquish only comes with an F1 style , trans, no Manual, sux |

I think I have to agree with you on most of your points. The F1 transmission is so popular now that nearly every dealership I go to that sells factory new Ferraris only carries F1 shifting cars (with a few exceptions). Im not against them at all, but I think personally, I would never own one. |

Even before I was an F car owner I was an avid reader of FORZA. They seem to have the most accurate reviews and pose some very interesting questions. After reading their essay on the F1 gearboxes vs standard shift I was curious. I borrowed a drive in a friends 355 F1 and, after a few secs of getting to know it, was off. Yepper.. it is slicker but is it better? Not in my opinion. It allows any wannabee to shift smoothly and quickly without the years of practice that many of us have put in. Having been an SCCA racer in my youth I judge a driver by HIS skill not the cars. I also would hate to see my generation be the last that knows what "Heel and Toe" means. I remember weeks of working out how to be smooth on my dopwnshifts and how great it felt the first time it allowed me to out brake on a corner at Mid Ohio. With the F1 any real estate broker that sells his 100th condo can buy his way into a skill level he does not deserve. IN the hands of a serious driver the F1 takes away from the soul of the experience. As they are finding out in F1 racing this year... even Michael is not as good without some of the high tech aids to give him an edge.. and it's making for better racing. |
