I agree with Debbie: that is right around the mileage where valves snap - my dino did it at 83,000km. I may know who the seller is. There should be plenty of mechanics in the bay area to inspect it for you if you're interested. I'm not sure the dealer is the place though since I doubt they get to touch the older cars much. Johannes of Dino Motors on the Peninsula (I want to say Redwood City but not sure) would be a good place to have it looked at. He dropped by when I was installing my rebuilt Dino motor to check it out for me (made sure I had the chain tension right, etc) but that was before he reopened his shop. Some of you guys probably met him on a drive or at the vintage races recently when he was driving his daytona. I can get the phone number if you'd like. But I don't know how the seller would feel about being inspected since he's a mechanic himself. But as a buyer, it's your right (and duty!) to not jump into a non-verified car.

I have an old copy of the Dino Register and the car is listed as originally being red. If you want a show car this may not be the car for you. There are a number of things wrong - yellow plug wires to mention the most obvious. I wonder if he replaced the valves. Dino valves are sodium filled and tend to break when they get old. We had ours replaced a few years ago with 308 valves to avoid this problem. As someone mentioned before check for rust - most of them have some. :-)

Go to Denny Schue's site, the Dino Register
http://www.dinoregister.com

You can email Denny with the VIN # and he will give you the history and provenance of the car. He has most 246's ever built, and he tracked the history for me before I bought mine. Very nice guy.

got relatively high miles, prob does not have paperwork on repairs since he did it himself, says he does not really need to sell so don't think he is giving it away, get a ppi. CC transport will run you 1400 to 1800 with the majors, horseless (maybe more) or intercity

Not sure what to tell you except that older cars need to be thoroughly inspected by an independant qualified mechanic. My Dino 246 is currently being sorted out to cure some issues. Since I bought it knowing about them I am actually excited as I am looking forward to restoring the car. You may feel differently.

Parts can be difficult to come by and expensive.

Do not be deceived by shiny new paint/interior.

Check for dried rubber bits like suspension mounts, seized tie rod ends, bushings steering racks etc.

Check for leaks from seals, and documentation of engine/mechanical work.

Good luck.

From ebay, sounds like his reserve is under $50k, he claims to be a ferrari mechanic. Any opinions on this car? Anyone in the area wanna go check it out? (I'm clear across the country in VA). Any idea what cross-country covered transport would run?
