I've used the line for this exact reason. When selling my S2000 I was hoping to explain to someone that I wasn't just dumping the car because it was crap or not as much fun as I hoped.

After thinking about it I decided that it really wasn't anybody's business but my own why I was selling it. I still feel the urge to use the line though. Weird.

Hanging around with my Europa friends, I know a LOT about restoring cars. I believe most of those people when they say that.

First off, I'd say 90% of people who start a restoration never finish. Maybe it's even higher. You get 'shipwrights' disease wher you start on one thing and it leads to 8 different paths. Next thing you know the car is in pieces and you lose interest/energy/money. People who are handy with cars still get in over their heads almost every time. Thus, there are a lot of project cars out there for sale. Some are good values, others are not.

Second, the costs of a restoration never pay; I don't have to tell you Ferrari guys that. Unless it's the $50k Daytona or $200k 250 GTO, you always spend twice to three times what you budgeted with little hope of recouping that. So people run out of money and have to bail on the project.

Then they sometimes just lose interest. After a year the car is still in pieces, and they've moved on to other things; wives, children, etc. Five years later they finally decide to unload it.

So buyer beware of course, but I do belive there are a lot of projects for sale for the stated reasons.

Some people want to know why a seller is selling. Is it because the car has some flaws and they want to ditch it fast?

I've seen this line many times in the muscle car resto area, and it's not a bad thing. If someone has a finished 19xx xxxxxx car and he is moving on to the next project (the act of restoring is the hobby for most, not the end goal) then it's a perfect comment to make. I don't think it's ment to confer a sense of "Well I have this xxxxxx car so this xxxxxxx junk has to go".

Always be weary of any line a seller feeds you, for any car :-)

to me people say that to provide assurance to another buyer that this ferrari is a great car and I would keep it but I have another one that I am busy with - Its total bs - but better than saying - I am trying to dump this car because ferraris are money pits :-)

I've seen this verbiage on several eBay Ferrari listings - and with several different "sellers". Has anyone else run across this line?

First of all, why make this statement? Am I supposed to be impressed or reassured because I'm dealing with someone who is supposedly restoring another car? Maybe I'm missing something.
