KH-
I have the Valentine hard wired into my battery so I don't have to deal with wires. It has saved me many times and I like the directional arrows.
BUT if smokey hits you with a gun-----forget about it! No detector will save you.

I also have valentine 1's in all my cars, and after awhile, you feel like you need it. ;)

However, to add something more useful, I live in the Seattle area and I noticed a few things recently (which jive with an article in Automobile magazine). Apparently Seattle has been testing out the red-light-runners (i.e. take a picture of your car/plate if you go through a light that is red). And, while I certainly don't make it something I would intentionally do, many places apparently lower the yellow-light time.

At one intersection where this red-light-runner was deployed, my radar detector went bonkers: super strong signal and continuous (i.e. it would not shut up) on the X Band. Of course it was consistent at that particular location - almost like when you are near a supermarket. So, there's another interesting angle for why a radar detector is useful.

I have both a Valentine and a Passport 8500. I have found that the Passport 8500 gives you better warning of K and Ka with the V1 winning in X band. The bogey counter on the Passport is better too because it gives you not only the number of radar sources but each of their individual strenghts all at the same time. That helps when going through familiar territory to weed out door openers and security systems. The V1 only gives you the number of sources with only the strenght of one source. The Passport has beat the V1 in all independant test and is cheaper too.

Get the Valentine One. It has a bogey counter (tells you how many radars it sees) strength meter & directional arrows. Also, V1 will not go obsolete, the company accepts trade-in if a new version becomes available(I bought mine in '95).

www.radartest.com I've never really looked at it, but I think it has some good info about the V1 and K40.

It's the directional arrows that I can't live without. When my V-1 sounds with the arrow pointing behind me I know the coast is clear ahead. My old Passport just beeps and makes you wonder where he is. Don't even consider another, just get the V-1.

I have a V-1 also and it is great. Like Fred said, often I will get a signal and slow down and cars will fly by me and a minit or two later they will hit their brakes.

I've had a Valentine for several years, and it has saved me on many occasions. Driving through Wisconsin, I often get an alert, slow down, then watch the other cars with detectors speed past me and hit their brakes hard a minute or two later.

I have a K40 detector built into my F355 but I find it gives too many false alarms to be of much use in town.

I think there is only one Valentine model; though I have read postings rumoring that a new model is being readied for introduction.

Am looking at the Valentine Radar/Laser detector as an early warning system for my 360. Anyone have an opinion or experience with one? Do you find them effective and if so, which one? KH
