I agree with Dr. T
I am in love with my 328, so why would I care about what someone else thinks of it.
And yes, the theory also applies to Europe.

Man you guys have to keep it down otherwise the secret will be out prices will skyrocket and those of us who don't have our 308's won't be able to afford them! There is one thing I have never been able to decide about the 308 and that is whether I prefer the black or tan interior.

The 308 will never, ever, ever go out of style.

100 years from now, it will be remenbered and revered. Hopefully some examples will survive essentially unchanged or restored. All will be cherished.

A centuary after his death, Enzo's creation will still bring grown men to tears, this I promise you today.

You're right, Erik. When you look at a 308 you're actually looking at a car penned in 75. Can anyone think of a pretty Chrylser from 1975? How about any car (besides the 308) from 1975 that people will actually think is just a few years old now?

Guys to real car people IMHO a 308 should get respect considering the time it was designed it really was a breakthrough. Think about what cars looked like in 1976. I mean a cadillac then was 20 feet long and that was a coupe. For the time it was built that was the top. 8cyl mid engine layout. This car(yes I know the dino was midengine) set the stage for the 328,348,355,360 so this car should get just as much respect as a 360 if not more. But, I love seeing any f-car and I get just as excited over a 308 as I do a 575 now the ENZO thats another story.

My question is this: WHO doesn't respect me?
Some yahoo(s) that I don't even know? Who cares what someone else thinks about your car? Screw em. A viper is faster then my 308? No $hit it's faster, dumbass. What college did they graduate from that helped them figure that out on their own? Go race a vette and leave me alone.

Greg,
Good point. A quick check with an inflation calculator shows that my $60K 85 GTS QV would be equivalent to $100,370.00 2002 dollars. As a reference point, in 1985, Porsche's flagship 911 was stickered at about 40K. Clearly, the 308 was not a "poor man's" Ferrari in it's time. If you remember the wild economy of the late eighties, you'll also remember the frenzy to aquire a trophy 308 and prices pushed100K for a magical time.
Respect or not, I love my QV and will never sell it ; )

Personally, I think a Ferrari's a Ferrari, and love the 308s. But others may differ, so I propose an easy answer, it works like this: Always keep with you the current Ferrari Market Letter & a calculator. When you see an F Car, quickly check the asking price index. Then, calculate the ratio of the value of your car to the value of the other bloke's car. For example, let's say you have a 308 GTB Fiberglass (asking price index $36,542) and he has a 355 GTS ($113,202). Your ratio is .302, which means you should respectfully avert your eyes and address the 355 owner only if he approaches you first. There are difficulties with this approach - for example, what if you actually own 3.1 308 GTBs? Etiquette requires that the multiple 308 owner modestly, but pointedly, refer to his fleet ownership: "My wife prefers my black 308 GTB Fiberglass, my daughter my yellow example, but I'm a traditional red Ferrari man." Newer cars also present a problem, of course, and not just because many are not covered by FML. Should an Enzo be valued at sticker, or market? Assuming a market value of say $1.2 million for the Enzo, one would I think have to own at least 26 308 GTBs (ratio of about .8) to justify initiating any sort of contact - hard to be discreet in that situation, probably best for the 308 man just to come right out and say, "I've got 26 of these, how d'ya like your Enzo?"

Some may complain that the value ratio method ignores critical factors such as car condition, # of cylinders, originality, etc., but IMO complicating the formula would just lead to lengthy, pointless, "mine's bigger" sort of threads.

As far as the poor mans Ferrari, the 308 did sell for $55-$65 back in the mid-80's. Think of what that equates to in today's dollars? Pretty damn expensive back then!

Another perspective on "Poor Man's xxx." Consider Poor Mans' cars from the following marques that we've hit on this thread...

Porsche (944?)
Vette (1985 stock vette?)
Dodge (NEON!)
Ferrari (308)

Good lord. If you're going to trash it for being a poor man's car, well: I would take my Poor Man's 308 over a Poor Man's equivalent of the trash talker's marque!

The same applies as you go down the chain; Porsche to Vette, Vette to Dodge... And when you get to dodge, you just Stop Caring. :-)

All I know is that I love my 308qv, and for it's day was a great car, forget that ,it's still a great car. People that put it down are usually just envious. I can pull up in my 308 next to a porsche turbo, vette, viper, etc.. and all eyes will be on my 308.

James, I absolutely LOVE my 308. I could have afforded a Viper at the same time. But you know what, the build quality of the Viper BLEW ME AWAY. It was built like a K-car. I had an AC knob fall off in my hand during a test drive. My 308 is 10Xs a better looking car. Who cares if the 308 is not fast...fast in not everything.

James (and all),

Not looking for respect from others just because i drive a Ferrari. It is that it makes ME happy. It is for MY enjoyment and when driving the '85 308GTS QV it brings joy into my life. Impressing others is not my way, personal happiness is.

Enjoy the Drive,

Another thing....

My father is a lover of American muscle cars, mostly the Vette. When I was growing up my passion was always with the exotics, which he never really was into. He's also developed the dislike of really hard riding or loud cars.
When I bought my 308 it was in Boise. I flew my dad there to pick it up and he drove it to Seattle for me. That was his first experience with an F-car and even after that long of a drive, he loved the car. Happy with the way it handles, looks and sounds.

It really pisses me off when people talk trash about the 308. It may be a "poor man's Ferrari", but that doesn't make it any less stunning.

I have never purchased anything in my life that gives me the satisfaction of my 308. Even though I haven't been able to drive it for the last week and a half, I find myself tinkering with what I can and just sitting in it being happy with the purchase.

As for no respect, haven't encountered it at all. I've had people come up and even mention that it's not a rocket, and they usually follow it up with "who cares, look at how beautiful it is".

It's a great car, great sound and a timeless design. If someone doesn't like it, tough $hit, I bought it for me, not for them.

As far as Vipers go, whenever you see one watch the driver. He's usually looking left and right, to see who has noticed him. Insecure about the purchase and looking for approval from people around. Ferrari owners seem more focused on the road or their car.

BTW... no offense to Viper owners on the group

Next to the Testarossa/TR, the 308/328 is one of the best looking Ferraris made in the last 20 years. MUCH better looking than the 348/355s IMO. And that is coming from a Viper owner....

I respect vipers.....really.
Park a 308 next to a viper and see which one women (and men) swoon over.

Perhaps a better comparison would be with my friend's 80's vintage diplomat!

Matt is right.. It's about the passion..

You can pick up that new Dodge Neon for about $19k. Four banger and it will hang and may even leave behind a 308. I'd still rather put up with the reliablity issues of the 20yr Ferrari than a Dodge that won't be worth spit 20 yrs from now..

It probably had to do with me growing up a Magnum P.I. fan, but I still think the 308/328 is one of the most beautiful designs ever. I don't own one, but have driven one. Not fast, but peppy, and fun to drive. I still want one. Saying that, I'd kill for a 246 (even slower[I don't think Ferrari got back into the speed game until the 512TR]). Those cars aren't about speed, it's about beauty and the driving experience. Dare I say it, the 308--it's the All-American Ferrari!

To me, a Viper is just a modern day muscle car.. Same lines with the Vette and the Mustang. Sure they look good, for a muscle car..

The Ferrari will always be considered an exotic vehicle.

If we have to compare, lets compare apples to apples..

I'm glad to see this thread. I always get crap when I tell people the 308 is my favorite car. I always hear it is too slow and too expensive to repair. I also get comments like "you would be better off with an NSX". The thing is I want a 308 I have done my research I know what I am getting into and I want it. To me it's not a case of is there anything better out there this IS my favorite car. No matter how much money I had be it 100k or 1 million I still will want to own one. And I also don't think of it as a starter Ferrari for me I definately will want to keep my 308 FOREVER when I get it. Ask anybody that knows me well what my favorite car is and they will say 308 guaranteed.

It's not how fast you go but how well you go fast

The 308 is the personification of style and the Viper guys just don't understand that.I like high tech and speed but the 308 is not that for me. Nor is it the Ferrari I own because I can't afford a newer one. Give me 10 million dollars and I'd still own a 308. The car is down right beautiful and I often find myself just looking at it thinking 'boy that is really something' Here is the corrected math:

308 = style and class

308 + white trash + no balls (ie the average Viper owner) = no respect

I absolutely love my 308, and I have never had anyone disrespect it, including a friend of mine who has an awesome Viper. On that note, when we're both out, who do you think gets the attention? That's right! I was on a road trip last weekend with my wife, and I can't tell you how many people waved, gave me the thumbs-up, pulled-up next to me with huge grins on their faces, etc. And as far as the newer, faster cars, their owners are generally enthusiasts, and they always want to start-up a conversation about the 308. They love it. The car has an amazing charisma that will never die. It blows me away how many people love to compare everything to the 308, a twenty-year-old plus car. Oh, but it's not as fast as the new Viper, Oh, I think the NSX is probably a better performer overall, oh, that's no more expensive than a new Toyota 4-Runner, etc., etc., etc. What's really going on guys? People secretly love the 308, and even though they know that plenty of newer cars exist that can tear it apart performance wise, nothing comes close to that beautiful profile, mystique, and nearly 100% public recognition of its position as the most known Ferrari ever built. Just wait, when the 308 is 40 years old, people will still be out there saying, but...but...but..., and will secretly be thinking, "Damn, I wish I had one of those."

Vipers build quality is OK, but some things severly lack. Engine is strong for the most part, 900hp crank is not that uncommon on stock internals.

Better learn how to deal with those 335 series tires and no traction control. Will send you into a spin very fast if your not careful. Friend of mine lost his brakes at 100+ and flew off the track. If you ever see a video shot from inside a red GTS wrecking at the track, that was him.

They keep calling it a poor-mans ferrari. Granted it is much cheaper than any modern F-car, but... it's 20_YEARS_OLD. Sheesh! Yeah, you could go buy a NEW Infiniti for the cost of a 20 year old 308...but why do people keep referencing the cars value like that. I just don't get it.

Yes, viper = hellified torque. Fun to put the loud pedal down and hold on. But, every single time my feet aproach boiling levels and the expansive sea of black plastic glares at me.. I wish the car had been developed a bit more. Is it fun? Oh yeah. It's a sledgehammer.

I think the 308 is one of the most beautiful automotive shapes out there. Many aggree with me. I've not found anyone who suggests Vipers are beautiful. Fast, and brutal, yes. Beautiful, no.

In the market they are the same value, they both range from 30k (early model viper) (early model 308) to 65-70k (late model GTS)(or 5k less for a late model 328) So, take your pick. Beauty or the beast?

I'm a shallow bastard and always go for the pretty ones.

I haven't bought one yet. I mean, it's not about money or speed sometimes. You'll never know unless you try, and I plan on trying many makes of cars to see which I truely enjoy.

tell them to compare your 308 to what Chrysler was making that year :-) That should shut them up.

The 308 may be slow for today but its still a beauty

Sheesh...started a conversation with the viper guys and boy, 308's get no respect. I know their old, and relativly inexpensive...but they make it out to be complete trash.

I for one could care less how much they cost. I like the body, I like the interior layout. Is it slow? Sure. Are you buying it to drag race and do 200mph? I sure hope not LOL
