What are the advantages/disadvantages of 3 valves (ie Mercedes) vs. 4 valves vs. 5 valves? |

"I wonder why they didn't go for 5 valves a cylinder like in the V8 cars." Just after the return from the turbo-era, Ferrari tried the 5-valve arrangement in the F1 motors and did not end up with either a wider powerband nor a higher horse power peak. So the F1 motors reverted back to 4-valve layouts. Honda did not need 5-valves to get 240 HP out of 2.0 litres! There was a conversation in the group last week about allowing the F355/F360 motors to idle for a few minutes after a good thrash on the race track because so much of the heat generated in the heads is removed by oil, and a couple of minutes idling allows the oil to cool the head and NOT get itself (the oil) cooked into goo. It is my opinion that once you go with a pyrimidial valve arrangement and compact combustion chamber, that some of the penalties (of using 5-valves over 4-valves) add up faster then the benefits. |

If there is one modern car I'd take over James' collection (save the P4 of course ;) ) it would be the Enzo Ferrari... Fastest to 100mph, .25 mile and salom is one thing... but the tech of the car is just so fasninating to me. How much downforce it makes. A 6000cc motor with a dozen pistons a ton of valves, almost as many camshafts as your hand has fingers, and a redline that's to die for... Don't get me started on the suspension, brakes, and tires... and hey, those wheels look nice too. |

Just finished the article and was a little surprised that they conclude that "the myth that a super sports car with exceptional performance cannot be civilized at the same time has been broken" by the Enzo. Actually, it was broken long ago by the Porsche 959, and then again by the McClaren F1. Great article regardless. Mr. Losee is a true Ferrari enthusiast. Hats off to him! |

<Ben immediately books a flight to Nebraska and buys a hige metal detector> Wait, you weren'ty pulling my leg, right? PS: those GTI racers can haul tail. I have similar respect for the S2000 track guys out here. It's a great cheap(ish) fun track car. Lap record holder for Sears Point too. Best! Ben... |

Dave, I used an alias for those articles. I keep all my Ferraris in an underground missle silo somewhere under the wheatfields of Nebraska. Wish I could find it again. All those wheatfields look alike after a while. But I'll keep looking.

I think that makes him a real hardcore racer in my book and rightful owner of the Enzo. So far our local Ferrari club members own 8 identically prepared ITA CRXsi club racers (the newer GTI racer). A great way to go club har core club racing with little expense. I like this guy! |

...but I was very surprised that the owner would (a) allow himself to be identified by name & town, and (b) allow himself to be photographed. Same with the Enzo article in Car & Driver (different car & owner). These days, when you are at that wealth level, a lower profile is probably better, for security reasons. IMO, of course. |

I just finished reading the article was very impressed with it. I am more impressed with the owner giving up 1500 miles to let the world know about the car's performance. |

As our very own Sean Harris predicted this months R&T has a 1200 mile road test of the Enzo by Phil Hill. Simply it is the fastest 0-60,0-100, 1/4 mile, and through the Salom EVER. It's top speed at 218 is only 5mph slower than my 30 year old MK-IV ;).
