Kenneth, you hit the nail on the head. The term "Jap" was evocative of an Aryan supremicist (sp?) mindset. Jeffrey, if that was not your intent (which it appears it was not) I apologize. Your point is well taken, but I think Robert McNair is right. There are lots of people who modify their cars. Some for show (and looks are ALWAYS subject <puke> on ricers). And then there are those who modify for improved performance. |

Jeff...'Ricer' I think is OK, but the term 'Jap' may offend more people on this forum than you think. |

Agreed KccK.. My intent was not racist but one ahs to admit the origins of the changes. Most of the things I mentioned began in lower class areas. Lacking the ablilty to have a car like Porsche they used what they had. While you may say it reflects their background, thats part of my argument...dumbing down to fit ethnic difference may be PC but it also gives you the things I mentioned. |

Jeff, I think David's point is that you are not justifying your views on objective grounds, but on emotive abuses. Suppose that some of us are hispanic boys. Suppose that some of us did come from the ghetto. And suppose that some of us might even be Japanese. How does your post look in their eyes? |

"Letting some kid think his tarted up Accord is on par with a vintage 911Sc just to make him feel cool does not help him aspire to owning a real sportscar." AGREED!!!! If we're not careful, they'll end up buying Ferraris instead of a true sports car like the Lamborghini. |

Jeffrey it is very suprising what some of these kids can do with these tuned cars. There seems to be two classes in the import crowd the wannabe's and the serious enthusiasts. When I was into hotrodding (years ago RWD days) we had two classes the serious motorhead/enthusiast and what we used to call the squirell i.e. the guy who would do dangerous things just to gain attention. Like everything else in life some things change yet some stay the same. In the world of modified cars having two classes of enthusiasts has remained the same however the cars of choice have changed. |

Robert I understand your point but beauty is a constant and so is style. Following the liberal ideal of dumbing down to make everyone fit in does not advance design or style it is only being PC and thats just sad. Letting some kid think his tarted up Accord is on par with a vintage 911Sc just to make him feel cool does not help him aspire to owning a real sportscar. |

Jeffrey you are missing out on the point of individuality. Everyone has diffrent tastes and what you consider style someone else may not. |

With all of the Fast and the Furious hype I was just chatting over drinks with some other car fiends. We discussed the difference between true design, such as the 3 series Ferrari and even the Saleen, vs the Jap toy racers. We talked about the old days of modified bodies and some of the really great hotrods and then how the hispanic boys from the Barrio decided to screw up the concept with "jumping beans" and flip top bodywork. Add to this the Ghetto "pimpmobiles" ( ahh yes 13" rims that are 12 " wide) and any real sense of style is lost. Once the Japs introduced, which was very common in Japan, body work that copied race style on non racing cars it became a joke. It's a pity that the kids don't spend the money on a nice used 911 and learn about real style. |
