I have to agree with Terry. Used to have a porsche and joined the porsche club, went to one event and swore i would never go back. Typical owner=doctor, lawyer, small business guy who made it, mostly nouveau riche and very arrogant and unfriendly as a group. Lots of talk about how great they have done, what else they are buying, blah, blah, blah. I was a new member and no one even said hello. Sold the Porsche.

First f-car i bought was a '74 Dino 246 which I brought to Cavallino in 2002. Had some trouble starting it in the parking lot before the concourse, and within minutes 6 or 7 other owners were right there, with tools and advice, and got me going. These guys owned between them an F-40, f-50, 550 Barchetta, 275 GTB/4 etc. yet they rolled up their sleeves to give a hand, and I had never met them before. similar experiences at track events since. I find Ferrari owners to be more at ease with their money and their lives, and not so eager to shove their posessions and success in your face.

This Cavallino (03) had a great lunch with Ernesto, Martin and others, and no one talked about the stock market or what they were buying next. totally different attitude. Much happier here.

Having said all the above, i tried out a Radical at Watkins Glen last week and the 360 Challenge may have to go. Radical is AWESOME and cheap to maintain.

I agree will Hill. Snobs drive all types of vehicles. If it not the car that gives them their snob-attitude, it will be their cloths, their jewelry, their house, their spouse, their occupation - anything that will make them feel better about the fact that they are no better than the rest of us. Ever notice that "very happy people" dont really care what other people do or say?

I have met just as many great Ferrari owners as Corvette owners. Both great cars that apeal to very diverse types of people.

All the Ferrari people I've met in person have been bend over backwards friendly. Owning a Ferrai wasn't their whole reason for exisitance which is how it should be. Just very nice folks who share a love of beautiful and fun to drive cars.

I don't know any Vette people.

Lotus owners are another breed. We all feel like we belong to the club of the insane and that promotes a special bond. In person, they'll drive 100 miles to help a fellow owner change his oil if need be. And bring the beer.

Too funny. You would think people would learn.

Folks is folks. Some are nice, some are not so much. This is true of all groups, all places, all times.

Taek,
Don't kid yourself. The only reason FChatters are nice to you is that you don't yet have a Ferrari. It's a huge conspiracy. Buy an F car, lose tons of money before, during AND after the sale and because you can't concentrate on work, you dream about another F car to add to your collection, so you lose even money before, during AND after the sale, and because you can't concentrate on work...it's a conspiracy I tell you. No one gets out.

"You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave" Don Henley, Eagles, Hotel Ferrari

Didn't the Eagles drive Ferraris? Don't you realise that in many cultures the eagle is the blood relative to the horse, both wild, powerful and both FLLLYYYY. Don't you see it? Didn't you know that the reason the Eagles broke up is because one of them REFUSED to give up his Porsche?

Same with Lambo people. One sure way to tell if you are an F/Lambo fan...look into the eyes, always glazed, unfocused, no wallets in back pockets because stinkin' seats too tight, top of hair flattened because stinkin' roof too low, and the final giveaway, for sure clue, right side of right shoe scuffed due to constant rubbing against the carpet due to ...you guessed it, STINKIN FOOTWELL too small!

It's a conspiracy I tell you!!! oh oh, too late, I see the gate keeper, Rob of the Lays looking this way..

RUN, RUN I tell ya, and don't look back....

Went to a family wedding this past an was introduced to a fellow F-owner. A 60ish gentleman who owns a 275gts which i saw some yrs back an it is beautiful. Anyways i tell him i have a Mondial, an he asks away regarding it as if it was of the same caliber. Which in his view it is.
Bottom line people are people wherever you go. Nice an not so nice.

"It's not strained, feigned politeness either, but generous camaraderie between gear heads in appreciation of a great marque."

You said it Taek! I'm not an owner (yet!) and I feel very welcomed by the group. Just a great feeling and pure celebration of something exciting and wonderful in life!

One of the things I love about our local F-car group is how we eventually all go out, and oogle over the cars. These are mostly f-car owners mind you, guys with new F-cars or what-have-you, oogleing a 308, and vicea-versa.

It is hard to be jaded in the presence of so many prancing horses :-)

When it's all said and done, we're all just kids awe-struck by these awesome machines, I love it!

Taek,

Anyone who's willing to get up EARLY on a Sunday and drive in the rain for coffee to look at cars has to be taken seriously. :-) No matter what you drove up in.

I'd like to see the turbo up close though.

Sorry (a little off topic)

If you want waves and smiles, get a Jeep.

I had one and Jeep owners wave to every single other Jeep. (not cherokee) It's actually has a name "the Jeep Wave" go figure.

I have a Corvette and can attest to the waving and the smiles. Makes for a nice motoring experience. Very nice people for sure.

I have a Porsche and although I get no waves they are nice in some gatherings. I find that with Porsche owners for the most part, there are the hardcore guys and the people who just want to be seen with other Porsches. The hardcore folks are very nice and will talk Porsche with you until your eardrums bleed. The other guys will treat you well depending on what they drive. I left my C4 in the dealership for some work and had a loaner Boxster. Went to a gathering and got treated like a little wannabe who really shouldn't be there. I show up with the C4 they treat me nice. Now I have a Turbo so they kiss my ass. No thanks, I'll stick to the FChat group I've met who are nice to me even when I show up in a Corvette! :-) It's not strained, feigned politeness either, but generous camaraderie between gear heads in appreciation of a great marque.

That said, if I meet the guys who matter in the Porsche community and really have Porsche flowing through their veins, I love to chat up a storm with them. Great folks.

Hey, how about those Lamborghini guys, I hear they're a great bunch! :-)

Cheers

My experience has been pretty negative with Porsche and Corvette drivers. Maybe it's just I...but do any of you Ferrari drivers ever notice when you are on the road, the Porsche and Corvette drivers seem to either stay way behind you, speed up to get away from you, or turn off the street and avoid you all together? I notice this behavior especially when they have a woman in the passenger seat.

A friend of mine invited me to attend a NSX club meeting with him. I didn't take the Ferrari, just went along with my buddy in his NSX. The group was very nice and welcoming. Just a bunch of guys, and one girl, with NXS's hanging out. However there was one guy in the group that was a bit stuck up, and not very friendly at all. But you seem to find that every were. What surprized me was their reaction when they found out I had a Ferrari. Towards the end of the gathering one of the guys asked if I had a NSX, and I said no. He asked if I was planning to get one, and I said that they were nice cars, but no I wasn't. So, he then asked if I had a sports car at all, and I said yes. I was kind of evasive about letting them know that had a Ferrari, because of some the battles that have gone on about the two. Then he asked what kind, and I said a 348. There was a pause for a bit and then he said, "A Ferrari?" I said yeah. At which time I was expecting the the "my car is better than your car" bit. But it didn't happen. The guys just asked a few questions, and then went about there meeting again. I was even invited to attend another meeting, and they wanted me to bring the Ferrari along. So as Rodney King said "can't we all just get along".

What does BMW and Cactus have in common? They both have pricks (old joke I heard about 11 years ago, BMW can be sub'ed w/ anything!)
I have owned Porches, Corvette in the past, and didn't know fellow-P or C drivers wave to each other on roads. I did noticed some people waved, but thought they are waving someone else they know!!! (I do do this)

I don't think a car they own makes them snobbish. I know some snobbish people who drives Ford P-up (wait maybe it was Chevy P-up) It is just too sad to think people would be influenced so much by what they drive or own.

Generallization & stereo-typing is not fun......

BTW, I do like my current '98 Corvette, but still looking for 328 to buy, because I want to drive it and have fun doing that.

I used to be into Vettes for a while, had a '63 split-window and a hopped up ZR-1. And I found the Vette crowd very nice in general - but - I did run into snobs and also some uneducated owners. Went to a Chicago vette show and couldn't believe the snobbery at that show...it was so bad we left early. In smaller gatherings the vette people "seem" to be much more down to earth. What amazed me was when I had the ZR-1 that on numerous occasions other vetters didn't even know about the car. They would ask "is that a big block or a small block?" or the best one of all..."what kinda car did that motor come out of?" Clearly there are a lot vette owners out there that simply wanted the car as a trophy and have no desire to learn about them or ever get their hands dirty working on them. Before I got my TR I was also considering a Viper coupe, just had to make up my mind. I went to several events looking at both Vipers and Ferraris, and asked questions, drooled, and asked more questions. I found the Viper crowd to be the most friendly. They went out of their way to show me the cars and to talk about them. I was very impressed with their hospitality. The Ferrari crowd was courteous and polite, but not outwardly friendly. Now that I have an fcar I go out of my way to talk to people and answer questions. I wave at people when I see them staring at the car. And some times even go out and cruise town a bit with the younger kids. I think it surprises them when I stop and talk to them and just hang out. They see the car as totally unobtainable and the owners as some sorta celebrity. Why can't we all just get along?

My mistake Kevin the pic really made it appear white :-) Still that car looks great in silver. It really sets off the rear brake cooling duct and is a nice contrasts with the wheels and mesh grille. If only all Ferrari owners could be like those on F-chat.

This is such a funny thread because my wife and I were just talking about this tonight. I am 26 and I have owned 6 Corvettes. The last two were both '98's. We belonged to the local Corvette club when we owned both '98's and I will never be a part of a Corvette club again. These guys only got together to drink. They also had their little groups and if you weren't one of them you just sat by yourself. They aren't real car enthusiasts and could hardly tell you anything about a Corvette except for that they are better than a Viper. On the flip side, we attended some Viper functions and were welcomed open arms even though we don't own a Viper. I have met some of the Ferrari owners from here and they have been wonderful people, again I don't own a Ferrari. I also notice about the Corvette forum is a bunch of people that think the Corvette is the only car in the world and so is the attitude from some of the Viper forum members, however most of them are nice. I will have to say of all the forums that I am associated with this is the best group of people and I will battle with anyone who says that Ferrari owners are snobs. For the most part they seem to be the most down to earth people that I have met. I am just glad that there is a forum where you can just be an enthusiast and still be welcomed. Thanks Ferrarichat. And I promise I will get a Ferrari soon.

Snobby people = the vast majority of Porsche owners.

Years ago I worked at a high performance tire store. It wasnt unusual for us to have a Ferrari, Porsche, and E Type Jaguar in the 3 bays at one time. As a matter of fact, we had as much square footage dedicated to racing tire storage as we did service area. On weekends we provided track side racing tire sales and service for sports car, NASCAR, and drag racing races throughout the Pacific Northwest including Regional, National, Trans Am, and IMSA races to name a few. No autocross thank God. I had the opportunity to meet and work with several names in racing at the time. Tullius, Holbert, Gregg, Folmer, Huffaker, and so on. Great people to work with !(Peter Gregg was a bit moody on occasion though).

As for the general everyday high performance street tire customer, the Corvette owners were good people almost without exception, Jaguar owners a bit eccentric but good to work with, Ferrari owners were very nice, very gracious ( but then again you want to be nice with someone working on your Cromadoras), Pantera owners in the same class as Corvette owners, and then there were the Porsche owners. For the most part Porsche owners were complete a$$holes except for the club racers. Even to this day I can spot a Porsche driver a mile away even if that Porsche driver is out of the required uniform of the replica racing jacket with PORSCHE lettered across the back, the Polo shirt with PORSCHE embroidered on the breast, and the Porsche sunglasses. In other word screaming Look at me! Look at me! I own a Porsche. Youre inferior, Im better than you, and my %&* doesnt stink. The general opinion among those of us at the store was why are such morons driving such a good cars?

Speaking from experience.

There are great people in both groups no doubt, but I have to say, the Ferrari people I've met and talked with on F-chat have been the most wonderful group. Wether you've got an F50, or a 1;18th scale MODEL of an F50, we're all just guys with cars.

I've actually encountered more prejudice on the Fiero board than on F-chat. Just goes to show you life has a sense of humor!

Best!

Gosh, I own 3 Corvettes, (one of the 343 White Z06's) a Viper GTS, and now a red 98 355 GTS Ferrari (a dream come true!). I have found that everybody in all three ownership groups seems to be warm, friendly and generally nice folks. I AM A CAR GUY! I like cars. Period. I just came back from a party and was talking with a guy I know who just got a BMW paddle shifter! We chatted about the various modes it can be set in and how it works. I enjoyed every minute of our conversation. Lets not assume that just because a guy doen't wave or because he owns a certain brand of car he is a snob. Heck, I even wave to folks driving Porches!

Kevin its nice to see a white Z06 they only made those in 2001 only. They did away with white in 02 if I remember correctly very sharp. For what its worth though both groups of people are enthusiasts for the most part, but some people spend money on a Ferrari just to send off that image or success or wealth. That could be why that guy in the 355 didn't signal to you john. But what do I know I want a Ferrari and when I get one I will wave to every single one I see. I wave to them as it is. I think that it all comes down to the person that is driving the car and when there are so few on the road you might only be seeing the non enthusiasts. Just a thought.

I have to agree with Kevin. Being a former Corvette owner and fanatic (I still love the Corvette) I must say that they are among the most friendly group of people out there. They don't care what Corvette you've got. To them aslong as you have one or want one your part of the club. They wave to each other all the time, they have shows all the time, they help each other out like no other car enthusists I have ever met. Of course there are the bad apples but they are few a far between.

i'm stopped at a light in my 360 today and a 355 spider is coming the opposite direction. he is travelling at a very slow rate of speed due to traffic. i keep my eyes on the car so i can give him a wave when he see's me. as the car approaches he keeps looking forward and refuses to look in my direction. the driver looks like a total stuck up prick. less than 10 feet from my car and he won't even look over......man SOME ferrari guys have attitude.

Kevin, you gotta bring the F50 out with us sometimes. I just got back from a wonderful drive to Whidbey Island with 14 fellow Ferrari nuts (12 cars). Everyone in the group is friendly and helpful. We held impromptu car shows everywhere we stopped. Even at the Mukilteo ferry terminal while waiting for our boat! Got big thumbs up everywhere we went.

Most vette and ferrari owners are usually older than me. I've met nice people on both sides. I've meet snobby people on both sides too. So it's tough to say.People on here are great though. Overall random people you run into I give the edge to the vette guys. It's one of the things I miss about driving the vette.

Hmm. Wel, given all this nice weather in seattle and all...

Upload

but anyway, I will have to say that in all my experiences with other owners (mind you I belong to ferrari clubs, but not corvette clubs), the "outgoing friendliness" of corvette owners is way, way, way, way far and beyond that of ferrari folk. To me, it seems there is a certain factor around the ferrari that makes peopel think they are unattainable and therefore they treat you different. Corvette people wave when they go by. They smile. The harley guys like em. We all park together if there's and open spot. My average (i.e. non event) ferrari person experience with someone who I don't know and I am lucky to get a smile but more often it's just plain ignorance. Even if i'm in one.

So, I would say yeah, you almost have to be "known" in ferrari land to be treated the same as the vette owners treat each other all the time.

There are a lot of people who make assumptions rather than bothering to actually learn about or experience something. In this case, it's a form of "auto-racism"! I imagine the gentleman you met wouldn't like it if I assumed he is in his 50s, about 5'7", 75 pounds overweight, balding and with a small penis. But that's the stereotype of a middle-aged crazy Vette owner. He should wake up. Stepping outside your self-imposed boundaries can be rewarding.
