Dave one of my main goals is to own a ferrari..but it was my fathers 355 (which he is still making payments on) that gave me the passion for ferrari..I know it is not mine and i dont treat it like it is. While I dont have a certain age in mind before i buy my first ferrari..I know that I will once I am finiancially stable in the market and have a good paying job, with making a down payment on more then have the price of the car and finiancing the rest..I am estimating time to purchase to be about 8 years, although I am still deciding on which model to eventually buy..I am thinking of a 00-01 550 (which will by 9 years old by then) but I have not heard any comment about it maintence wise..I have a sence opf passion but not pride of ownership..I dont expect my dreams to come cheap, as none of us here do.

I think you should ask for $89,000. It's high, but not too unreasonable considering he seems to have went to a lot of trouble to find this exact car. If silver is your favorite color though you will always regret selling it. I agree completely with you about the looks of the 348 Frank! I wouldn't trade my 348 for a 355. Maybe a 360 spider though...

Andrew,
No offense taken. You could not have known and I kind of regret even bringing it up. It appears you struck a chord with others besides me. You may wish to keep in mind that the group you are talking with here is generally much older and many worked hard, took risks, and put off pleasures for years, even decades before even being able to consider a Ferrari. Perhaps your father's story is like that. Like I said, I'm glad that it was hard for me, because the pride and satisfaction I have of making something from nothing cannot be replaced. I have a dilemma dealing with my own 22 year old son on how to give him opportunities I didn't have and enjoy some of the fruits of my success and still make sure he succeeds on his own work so that he can have the same pride and work ethic I do, but a better start. I think to some of us, your comment, even in jest, sounded like it came from a spoiled rich kid with a strong sense of entitlement. I hope that's not true and you will work hard, go on to great things and make your family proud.
I appreciate those who expressed support for my earlier comments.

Dave: No need for apologies or embarassment in regards to your post. I could not have put it better myself; in fact, I hope my father will still be around when I (eventually) purchase a Ferrari because in some respects I think the thrill he'll get having rides and drives of it will be the ultimate justification for me buying it. My parents have both been tremendously supportive not only through my secondary education, but also my tertiary education. I honestly and truly look forward to the day when I will be in a position to repay that support. Perhaps a new C-Class MB!!!

Frank: If you can imagine life without your silver 348 Spider, then sell it to this guy for as much as you can get. I'm sure he'll be willing to pay at least $80k. As someone already said, he should pay a premium for a factory silver Ferrari if that's what he so desires. But if that Spider is everything you truly wished for in a motor vehicle, and you could NOT imagine life without it in your garage, do not be tempted. Forget any profit you might make in selling it; you will only end up regreting your decision in the long term. I'm sure I do not need to tell you all this!!!

We were so poor when I grew up that we would use the Coffee grinds until they turned white and then ate them as Grits.

Dave, You have every right to feel as you do. You came up the hard way and that has made you the person you obviously are today. Don't call it sappy. We all have those great memorys of our lost loved ones and our early years. Last of all you were man enough to say it. BRGDS,

I wasn't going to say anything, but Andrew got under my skin. My dad, who was an auto mechanic never paid more than $100. for a car. We never sold them when we were through, just brought them to the scrapyard. He died when I was 20. One of my big sorrows is that he did not live to see my F-cars, he would have loved them. Sorry for the sappy story. I'm not looking for sympathy. Hard times in my youth contributed to my success and makes me more appreciative than if my dad drove Ferraris.

Hell, I remember the advent of FM radios and 8 tracks. One Corvair I had had a tube radio that had to warm up before it came on.

Frank,
Personally, I think silver is the best color on 348's but there are very few. A local guy has a silver 94 TB challenge with red interior. It's the best looking 348 I have seen.
I'm like you, I would sell anything if someone wants to pay too much which I think that would be about 80K in this case. Also, I'll consider any car I think is too cheap, so if you want to sell for about 68K, I'll send a check! 72K sounds like he doesn't want it bad enough.
I would hate to be without a Ferrari though which is why I have 2. I was without a Ferrari for about 4 days a few years back, it was awful!

The Ferrari Market Letter shows an average asking price of $77K for 348 Spiders. The Sports Car Market Price Guide shows a selling price range of $60-70K. All of this is interesting but if you really like the car which it sounds like you do it may not matter and it should be worth a lot more for the unique and I think beautiful color combo. And as Whart says, what would you do with the money even if you could get $80 or so. Too little for a 355 Spider, about right for a non Spider TR and why buy anouther 348? It will be interesting to hear what you end up doing.

Kenny, I have no desire for a 355 Spider. While I understand it is faster and is higher tech than my 348 Spider, I like the looks of the 348 Spider more. I have always based my decision on which Ferrari to buy on looks, especially a Spider which will see very little if any track time. Different likes and dislikes are what keeps life interesting.

Screw the market value. What does the car mean to you. If you bought the car because you couldn't afford the 355 and thats where your passion is, go for it. Sounds like you love your car- what else do you have in mind that could replace it? Chances are, if this guy went through this much work to find this car, then he will pay a healthy amount.

Luca Di Montezemolo said that in an ideal world Ferraris would only be made in 3 colours:
Rosso
Giallo
Nero

I can sort of see his point.....

I really don't want to sell it at this time. I love the car and the color combo myself. I have thought about buying another classic 2+2 Ferrari such as a 250GTE or 330 America . But, I love the Spider in the Spring and Fall. He sent me an e-mail a few moments ago and made an intial offer of $72,500.00. I responded with "no". I'll await his next move.

And then what will you do? Buy another 348 spider? if so, what about the additional costs of fettling an unknown car?(i assume you've sorted out whatever gremlins existed in yours). Then there is simply the transaction cost and time to switch cars, unless you were in the mood to change anyway. And, since the color is important to this guy, a premium should be paid to make you go through this. Hi eighties, low nineties, if you want to put it to him, but then he is arguably within '95 355 territory. Have him make you an offer in the first instance and see how badly he wants it...

since this guy obviously wants it, check out the price of what you want to replace it with. then set your price as close to the other one as you can without insulting him (too much anyway), and let him bid you. i agree with tom, there is always a price and color should not really mean that much to you (whats the cost of respray anyway?).

Frank, You are absolutely correct, everyone does not want a red car. My point was on resale I think a red or yellow Ferrari will sell faster then specialty colors that are mostly personal preferences IMO.

I just received a telephone call from a fellow in Nashville that said he wanted to buy my silver on black 348 Spider. He has never seen it and I have never met or spoken to him before. It seems he saw my car in The Robbe Report back in late 2000. When he called back then to inquire it had already been sold to me. It has taken him this long to track me down. Apparently Ferrari didn't make a lot of silver 348 Spiders and he has looked everywhere to find another one. He has asked me do I want to sell it and how much do I want. While it is really not for sale, I figured it never hurts to listen to an offer. What do you guys thank a 1994 348 Spider, silver on black, 16,xxx miles, four new P-Zeros, belt service done by Shelton in June 2000 is worth ?
