William,

It's 4AM here in the Bay Area and I find myself still in front of the computer doing what I detest most: working. Are my eyes playing tricks on me or was that the funkiest post you've ever put up?

About the My Cousin Vinny reference, you're still welcome in my book. As long as you bring Marisa Tomei that is...

Cheers

Oh, on the Pebble Beach, Sierra Nevada run: i'm slated to have a pretty busy summer already, what with a long-planned sex change operation and moving our household and all. But, seriously, if i buy that Drogo referred to in the other thread, i'm in, right? I can see it now, showing up like MY COUSIN VINNY in that funky piece, only to be met with disdain by the headwaiter, who eyeballs my motheaten red clown suit, and says, icily "Sorry, sir, but we do have a dress code here." But, and here's the plot twist, Gerald and L. Wayne both discover that the car was originally commissioned for Queen Bertha, a notorious piano bar singer who maintained questionable relations with Enzo. Enzo was said to have actually spoken something other than Italian in relation to this car, and soon, all the owners of Enzos, F-50s and other more mainstream ferraris are having their cars rebodied, Drogo-style, in anticipation of the next year's concourso. Ross: I hear you.

bill, have you driven porsches before? if not, i would highly recommend some professional instruction in your car before you attempt any barchetta type speeds in turns etc. porsche requires a slightly different technique. they have ironed out a lot of the rear engine ills over the years but when it breaks it will do it in a hurry and there is little chance of catching it. just a word of warning from somebody who's been in the bushes pointing back at the track.....

Mr. Hart, I just want to say that your Barchetta in Road and Track is the car that got me hooked on Ferraris :-)

That said, there is a GT2 sitting in an exotic dealer in Vancouver, my friend and I would check it out every so often...its a sweet car, congratulations!

Congrats Whart. The Porsche is one amazing car. Enjoy it and with all the money you save from longer maintenance cycles, you can easily buy the BB all over again!

Best wishes

I am always one to say that all that "soul" and "spirit" is a bunch of codswollop. I drove a GT2 on the track this month and marvelled at its handling, brakes and (somewhat late) power but I got back in my regular run-of-the-mill 360 and smiled again. I am beginnig to believe this bs myself.

Like I said on the phone, bill, you're going to love that GT2. And, it's hardly "mass produced", but what it will do is smack every other sports car on the market (save for an enzo, mclaren f1, zonda, ascari, etc.) back into it's place on the street or track.

Yeah, not to be a about it or anything, but i think the w/w production numbers for the GT 2 are actually lower than that of the barchetta. But, i respect your feelings, Martin. I'm still with you in "spirit."

Martin,

Porsche has only 3 robots assembling their cars. The rest is done by hand. As a matter of fact, I think that they have more hand craftsmen than any other auto maker in the world.

The GT2 is hardly mass produced either. You should see them build these things in Stuttgard. It's not like a Bentley where a steering wheel take 40 man hours to fit with leather, but pretty close. These cars are amazing.

sad to see you trade up for a mass produced honk of metal.
yes it may be fast, it may be this and that but it lacks the spirit of Enzo and the little kinks that you only get with a hand built car.

Maybe I am bias (forget maybe, surely) but since I have seen them being hand built in Maranello a week ago a Porsche is no option.

Hope you will be back with us soon. :-(

I'd be interested in the decontented 12 that you speak of also, wm. 575 Stradale, 575 GTO or whatever senisble handle might be placed upon it, bet there'd be a ready market. Hope it'd come with an exposed gated six-speed like some of the early cars, too, if we're going full-wish list here.

Also think the 365 Competizione on Mike's site looks interesting.

Thanks for the support, guys. Porsche will be silver/black. The barchetta is now in the hands of Eddie Karem, the broker, who will handle the sale. Dunno what the next F-car will be. On the one hand, i like the convenience of the modern cars; on the other i like the characterfulness of the older ones. One ideal, since i do like the 12's, would be a "decontented" 12 like the version now being done with the 360: stripped down, lower weight, tighter suspension, higher tune on the engine, racing seats, dump the radio (perhaps even the air con), but still street legal. I'm glad i have the luxury of fantasizing. We will see. I bought another house, this one has a 5 car garage, so i guess there will be room for expansion...

I always wondered how people could justify having a $300K 100% convertible. the GT2 is a very nice car. Nothing wrong with mixing it up.

did you sell the 550 or trade it?

Congratulations, William. it sounds like a good decision after a multitude of Ferraris. You've pretty much been through most modern cars except the Testarossa. 456 and 360 anyway.

If you dropped out of this community we'd have to search you out and drag you back, so you saved us a lot of effort.

I've been hesitant to post this, for fear that i'll take a waxing over my decision not just to sell the barchetta but to replace it, with (god forbid) a porsche. (Still have a hard time spelling that). Anyway, i love the 550- been driving it in coupe, and now open form, for close to 4 years. The top on the barchetta has, however, been a source of huge frustration, since i can't use the car for long trips; even the jaunt down to Reading a couple weeks ago became a when the sky opened up. So, the barchetta is gone, not without a little sadness, but because i can't fully enjoy it just having it for short runs within shooting distance of my house,or looking at it parked in my garage, i decided to part with it now. Difficulty was, what to buy next. I thought seriously about another 550, in coupe form, but having driven them for a while, i think i needed a change; i do like the 360 spider, but i'm still smitten with serious torque. So, i'll pick up the P-car later this week, and let you all know what i think, performance wise. I don't plan on dropping out of this community, though, even if i have to park in the spectator lot at upcoming events. Regards.
