Tony asked: "rich, have you done these mods? What cam and carbs did you use?"

While I did rebuild the dino engine with high comp pistons (forged by JE) and bigger valves, I never got around to buying the performance cams or bigger carbs. But both are available from Mike Elliot's company in London called Superformance (www.superformance.co.uk). I think he lists the DCNF carbs in both 42 and 44.

One of these days I'd like to build up a V6 with all the goodies and see how it goes!

Steve, I like your comparison with the 360, the size difference is amazing, big difference in weight also.

Steve, I saw a picture of your 246 in the showroom section and noticed it sets a bit lower than my car, did you lower it?

If anyone is worried about lack of power in the Dino, they can be improved quite cheaply. About $2k will get you larger carbs and a new set of cams for the Dino engine and would probably add at least 20hp. (of course paying someone to install the cams is costly - but don't let them quote you more than 10 hours. it can be done at home if one wants to have a little fun). Removing any smog equipment is now ok in most u.s. states as well (even california for 1974 and prior cars) so you don't need to run a cat anymore or spin a smog pump. 200+hp for a 2.4 liter engine is not so bad, ha!

I hope to join you guys in dino 246gt or gts ownership someday. I also like it in Black!

Solly,

Awesome. The 246 is just a beautiful car, perfect. Looks great in Black. What do you prefer about it over the 360?

Vincent.

Love my dino. It's 30 years old and stuff wears out, but it's a blast to drive and is very quick if you know what you are doing (keep the revs at 5-6000 for normal driving). also sounds great). Prefer it to my 360 spider for normal usage.

Scott, I replied to your p-mail. Yes, I understand that Dino's didn't feature the horse or the ferrari logo on the back, but I like them there in any case and the rest of the car seemed to be in really fine shape and drive well. I really wonder why they weren't on from the factory... did Enzo think of this Dino as a Ferrari or not?

BTW, the previous owner in Atlanta really knew how to drive this car. He double clutched and shifted like a real pro, while I was hunting and grinding real painfully.

Tony congrats on your car. I saw that one but the only thing I didnt like on it was the Ferrari logo and horse were on the back and were drilled on.

May I ask how much you ended up paying for it? I believe asking price wa $57,500?

Thanks
Scott

I purchased a red/burgundy '72 246GT from someone here on Fchat, but I learned of the car doing a search on the web. My first Ferrari. Had a really nice model car of the Dino since I was 6 and always dreamed about the impossibility of owning one myself.

I went to Atlanta to see the car while out on an east coast biz trip (I live in San Jose). The owner kept it in really fine shape and the owner before kept it inside an aircraft hangar so the interior was in exceptional condition.

I had test driven one out here in Cal that was also in great condition, but each one of these seem to have its own natural personality, and the one in ATL was really a snarling tiger. It drove very well, was surprisingly quick, and the sound was glorious. Fell in love. Bought it. Leaves for San Jose in 2 weeks after some basic service at a local mechanic there.

Here is the for sale website:

Congrats Tony! I am looking for one also. Where did you buy it private or dealer and what type GT or GTS?. I am looking for a GT. It could take a while, loads of crap out there. I'm willing to wait and will spend for the right car. I vave a 308QV and they are fun but having driven 246s, they are much more nimble.

maybe relatively low on the HP scale, but it's still alot of fun to drive and it has enough punch to be exhilirating. Plus the sound effects are still all there.

I just bought a 1972 GT yesterday.

Search the archives, plenty of discussion (lots by me!) of the 246. Remember they are 30-35 year old cars -- so shop carefully!!
