Hi Mark..$3K for a 30K? It better not need anything but belts! With the time the car has sat, you will probably have to replace the CAM seals. A rebuild on the waterpump is probably a prudent move. Your rough running ( I assume) is probably carb related. The carb rebuild on my '77 308 was about $1K, parts included. The closest mechanic near you, who is one of the very best, is Wayne Hynes. His shop can be seen at www.srexoticautomotive.com. Waynes shop is in Livermore, well worth the tow ( I live in Sonora and that is what I do). Call him on his cell, (925) 759-6102. Wayne was Porche's lead race mechanic during the 2000-2001 season, a very high-end guy at only $100 per hour. Also, he will tell you about an aluminum-titanium custom tuned exhaust he is building for my car. His exhausts focus is of absolute performance, not just the sound that a lot of guys are after. Keep me posted and let me know of your progress at [email protected]. Lets buzz to Yosemite with some other bay area members!

Mark
To answer some of the question ...
1)stick with the orginal electronic ingition..for now.
2) Yes you can.. do not be in a hurry and do your research.
3)Orignal 16" are hard to find. See archives .. you may want to go to a re production version.
4)best deal means shopping around. Some places have better prices on some parts but not all. T.Ruttlands is a good place to start.
5)Check with the local Alfa or Fiat clubs nearby.. they understand carbs. They can be tricky.(the carbs that is)
6)Yes ... you can do it . Take your time and get the info you need. I spent a month adjusting mine.. but completely detailed the engine at the same time.
7)a)Research the archives.. there is alot of information in them. b) do not be in a hurry. c)the more you do yourself the less it will cost you. d) find some who has the know how and can get excited about having to help you with your project.
8) Yes ..see step 7.
You should also rebuild the alternator as well.
Regards
axel

I just aquired a 1977 308 GTB Black/Red. 31K original miles, 1 owner. It sat for the last several years indoors. It started right up but you can imagine how it ran. I also own an 86 328 GTS. Here is my list of questions...
1. Change to electronic ignition or stick with the original type set-up?
2. Can I do the 30K by myself (I am mechanically inclined)?
3. Where can I get some 16" wheels, or will 328 wheels fit the car? Cost?
4. Where can I get the best deal on parts to do the 30K?
5. The carbs have old fuel stains on them. I know they need to be adjusted, but should I overhaul them while the car is down? Who can overhaul them? Cost?
6. Are the valves (adjusting) something I can do myself?
7. Is there anything else I should consider or any other advice any of you might have?
8. Can I do the timing belts myself?
I have a local guy who is pretty knowledgable on these cars who will do a 30K for around $3K. I would like to learn to do this stuff myself as well as save $2K.
Here is my plan of attack: Do the timing belts and tensioners, water pump, all hoses (water and fuel), adjust the valves, R&R the cards as nessessary, change the oil, flush the radiator etc. Any advice on any of what I have just written will be helpful :-).
Regards, Mark
