*agreeing with several people at once*
this is my view on topics like this- it seems to mirror just about what everyone has said already.
you can buy a ford pinto and have less than 70,000 in it and it will outrun, outhandle, and outstop anything on the road. with a leather interior, carbon fiber parts, whatever you want. people HAVE done it. for 70k you can have a custom everything on a car that started out as a seven-hundred dollar sheet of metal. if the world truly revolved around performance, everyone would be driving pintos with blown v-8's, or something of the like. I beleive the answer to that question, and the reason that nearly EVERYONE would choose a bone stock ferrari over something that is much faster (and there are much faster cars for the money) is all in one word : style. thats what defines a car. i can show ten people a pinto that will outrun a McLaren and most will find the idea "neat" and novel for a short time. in the end, it is, and always will be, a pinto. show ten people a pristine example of a stock ferrari and watch as every single jaw in the place drops to the floor. what would you expect. its a ferrari.
alright. thats my speech for the month.

Bought mine cause I like the looks and it was all I could afford to get at the time. I enjoy cars that can be tossed around and not have to see parts go bad and maintenance easy to take care of. Unfortunately Ferrari did not do to well in that category, did enjoy the car but my little S2000 did better in all categories except for the exhaust note. In fact I enjoy tossing the S2000 around than driving the Lambo and that is the reason for buying it, it's the best compact sports car for the money and I can find parts to upgrade without the hassles and most the the upgrades I can do myself. One thing I hate of owning an exotic car like Ferrari or Lambo is being raped on service charges, I know the prices are significantly higher than what it should be and any honest mechanic can realize that. I've done my own mechanic work in the past and do some on my own time when available. Some mechanics who work on high end cars charge more for many reasons that most high end car owners should not know of. I did my own homework on this and having done mechanic work in the past I have the knowledge of this. In reality charging more for labor is nothing wrong as long as the person paying is OK with it, I wouldn't go for it unless I absolutely don't have the time to do it myself. It really boils down to is how much is your time worth vs. your payout to have someone do it for you.

At one time I worked for a division of Fiat called Comau Productivity Systems and was lucky to make trips to Ferrari Plant to take customers on tours while in Italy. One time when I was their the Italian soccor team toured with us, and we were all taken for ride in a Ferrari 308.
I loved it, and told myself some day I would buy a Ferrari. I sold my boat three years ago said it was time for that Ferrari, bought a 1984 308 GTS best thing I have ever done in my life. I have met alot of really nice people, and the Ferari has opened a whole new world. I along with Dave Wexall have started a Chapter in Michigan of FCA because of this started my own company Right Promotions which is a Promotional Idea Company (We put your company name on almost anything) I have taken my 10 plus Ferrari to shows, and last year won first place at Concours Italian in Detroit looking forward to this year.
I have just been asked to supply large sign for this years Concours from Right Promotions, and the BEAT GO'S ON!!!!

No no no. Not "why not?", but:
Because it was there.

It was there, singing to me, like Homer's Sirens singing to Odysseus. (My friends must have recognized my similarities to Odysseus -- they call me "Odd".)

It was there, calling to me, calling my name in sonorous puffs of exhaust, beckoning to me with the sensuous curves of its shapely flanks, ... heaving, ... sweating, ... umm, what? Oh yes ...

It was there, gleaming in the showroom lights, purring like a kitten sabretooth, ...

... well, really the salesman had left the stereo amp on, killing the battery, so they couldn't even start it.

Actually, ...

I wound up settling for a Ferrari, because I couldn't find a good used MR2.

What other car turns the heads like a FERRARI? I have, on more than one occasion, witnessed someone at a cross street, pull out into the middle of the road and stop after I go by. They are watching my taillights go down the road and know they just witnessed the mystique of Ferrari. Then they remember they're still sitting in the middle of the intersection and finally, move on. What other car does that? It ain't no viper and it ain't no vette either, sorry.

I actually bought my Mondy to enjoy the company of friends.I hate the 400i and there were no other 4 seater choices in Ferrari at the time. It is not my first nor my last Ferrari but, so far, I love it the best.
AND YES.. I looked at 308gt4's and many of the 330 series cars... but wanted something stable for a daily driver.

OH MY GOD THE SOUND!!!

I'm convinced you actually pay $130k for the sound an F355 Spider makes alone, then Ferrari is nice enough to GIVE you this whole car for free!

Best!

Gear ratios. No, not kidding.

I've been a Corvette guy for nearly forever. A new 'Vette has ratios such that on a twisty road you'd stick it in 2nd gear and leave it there. Good for, say, 30mph to 80mph or so. Might as well have an automatic. I wanted to shift. So I researched ratios, such that the car would require some rowing of the gearbox at normal 'sporting' speeds.

Came up with: Miata, and V8 Ferrari (any, as actually the ratios are similar in most all of them). Had a wholesaler friend looking for a suitable Miata, while I tried out different F-cars just for giggles. I don't fit well in Ferraris, and can only drive a Miata with the top down - looking over the windshield. But I found out that I fit in a GT4, and surprisingly I can actually drive it comfortably.

The ratios are perfect!

On the way to church, I was walking by an F-car dealer, a guy yelled "it is a penis extension". I thought, cool. I will take it. I have waited 2 months and much to my surprise, I have not noticed anything different with my plumbing, but it is really fun to drive. Therefore, I will keep it.

Along with the obvious craftmanship in styling and mystique...The shift gate was the straw that broke the camel's back for me...just a rush...kind of a cross between contemporary styling yet muscle car-like shifting sensation...I hate driving a stick that shifts like jello...practically not having a need for a clutch.

My 2 cents

As others have said, it's the history, the heritage, the fact that each one is relatively hand-built, the uniqueness (anyone can own a corvette and I see 20-25 a day...how boring!!, even the Z06 looks just like any other new corvette...how boring again!).

It's also the fact that every single Ferrari is test driven for 50-100 miles in the Italian country side and Fiorano before delivery.

Nothing gives me the hot flashes like a Ferrari. Every one of the cars ever produced is sexy. While a Lotus, Viper, or Porsche is nice, it just isn't a Ferrari.

My take is different from most of what has been posted.

I always felt that Ferrari was a flashy, overpriced maintenance nightmare vehicle made for those who wear gold chains around their neck and wrist. Exclusivity was the saving grace for the car.

However, when I saw the 360 convertible I was smitten and decided it was the car for me. I loved the look and sound of the car. That fact it is a Ferrari isn't all that important to me. Performance, styling and exclusivity is the attraction.

The truth is Ferrari's reputation for poor reliability is a handicap and why many believe Ferrari's shouldn't be driven often. It was my main concern before buying my 360 Spider.

Played Sega's F355 in the arcade and at home and fell in love with the Ferrari sound. Figured I either had to buy a Ferrari or the arcade cabinet. Although I didn't end up with a 355, a 308 will do me fine.

We all own a ferari because it is FERRARI. It is THE car a work of art both of sight and sound. One of history and performance. There is no other car like a Ferrari. This is a car that many dream of but few achive. It is FERRARI. And most important it will piss my exwife off.

First post here ... I bought my F about three years ago, loved the 308/328 body style and wanted the bulletproof-ness (relavite) of the 328. Hooked in 5th grade and reeled in by Magnum. Found my GTS right here in Texas. The sounds and the handling are unique, and a bunch of Italian workers built each piece. That's why I bought my F.

i had driven/owned a number of fast cars, but the thought that always came to me was 'its pretty fast, but its not a ferrari....'. the other thing that i figured out was that if i bought an old enough ferrari, i would probably never lose that much money on it, and even if it wasn't the fastest car of the moment, it would still give me a thrill everytime i saw it.

i really have an affinity for many different marques, but no car nut's life is complete without having owned a great ferrari. so i had to do it.

Well, of course there's the usual "always wanted one" with me. I was NUTS about Ferrari's and especially Lamborghini's when I was a kid.

What actually led to me buying one? I made the "mistake" of renting one in Las Vegas. That $600 "splurge" led to a $20,000 "investment".

Plus with me it was a "too good to be true" situation. One of my clients overheard me talking about my rental experience and general love of Ferraris and wondered if I would be interested in an old one he had that was broken down. He just needed rid of it so he could get his RV in his hanger-sized garage. I had it towed to my mechanic who just HAPPENS to work on Italian cars (another omen). All the numbers worked out for the best. The previous owner even carried the note at like 6%; I'm still making him payments! That's called being in the right place at the right time with the right people talking about the right stuff. Or something like that..

After watching almost every episode of Magimum PI, my Ferrari passion was alive and kicking. After many years and continued respect for the marque, and visiting San Francicso and Los Gatos I found my life style would not change with a 360 purchase. It's the best sports car I've ever had and the closest thing to my Vintage Formula Atlantic (1977 March) to drive everyday. Unsurpassed styling and engine sound (tubi)!

When I was in college, I wanted to achieve three goals before turning 27 years old, and one of those goals was owning a Ferrari.

Why Ferrari?

1)Beauty and performance,
2)Pride of owning one of the best performance and world-known and respected sports cars in the world,
3) Not everyone can own one, and
4) Flash, bragging rights, and public attention.

Sure, other cars out there might be more expensive and might be faster; but, in my opinion, unlike Ferrari, they are not prestigious -- they are just expensive and fast --people have an easier task of building an expensive and fast car (e.g., NSX, Corvette, and Viper -- no offense -- just my opinion) -- the trick is building an expensive, fast and PRESTIGIOUS car that appeals to those enthusiasts who have the money to purchase the car.

When I go to a social event, and a person asks me, "What kind of car do you drive?" I reply, "Ferrari." End of discussion -- I don't need to go into details to boost up the car -- Ferrari says it all.

Only a few cars in this world have prestige, and Ferrari is one of them, which is the main reason I decided to buy this fast and expensive car over the others.

You could have bought a Porsche... or a Lotus... or a Lambo... or a Corvette... or a Viper... or an NSX... or any one of a number of faster, more practical, less expensive, more reliable, less tempermental, and/or easier to maintain cars. Why a Ferrari? What is it about a Ferrari you couldn't find elsewhere?

For me, it's the F1 heritage. Ferrari's always been my favorite F1 team (even when they sucked), and owning a Ferrari is my way of participating in my favorite team and sport. Of course, the fact that the car looks and sounds beautiful helps.

What about you?
