Thanks for the information guys.

John Dillinger - saw that and mouthed the word 'wow' without meaning to!

William - read yours and mouthed the word 'sh$t' - glad to hear you are using the car on the track - sounds amazing fun, but with those servicing costs I will be using the tracks vehicles and keep mine for the road!

The TR I am looking at (this afternoon!) will be used for road use only - I expect to do about 5,000 miles per annum, and it will be used on a regular (weekly) basis.

Just had another look at John's post. WOW.

William... Thanks for the info! The track would definitely make a huge difference... Just to make sure I'm clear, so do you basically do the 30k every 15k to compensate for the additional track wear?

Marc, I run my 512 on the track quite a lot, 3 or 4 x per month in a good month so my maintenace is higher. She eats Lots of brake pads & shock bushings & slicks :-) That $1.00 per mile includes the $8,000 major service done every 15,000 miles

Mark, me neither. L's comments about $12,000 for a major is insane! I was looking for a Testa, but that 996TT is starting to look real good...

William/Bruce, there's a big discrepancy between your maintenance experiences. Is that a regional thing? It doesn't seem like it's an individual vehicle issue as there is even a big gap on major service pricing. What do you think the discrepancy is most likely attributed to?

The reason I ask is that Bruce's numbers I would be willing to live with, but Williams cross over to the threshold that I wouldn't be willing to live with =)

Power steering isnt needed in this car, thats why it doesnt have it. My car was running top condition and the 30k major serv. was over $12,000 that included new tires, a clutch depends on the year, mine a '88 model was close to $4,000. Its expensive to maintain but highly reliable. In 3 years I have run 22,000 miles of total pleasure.

Marc,

Greetings from some one not too far a way from you!

Try QV London for some advice http://www.hamletcg.co.uk/qv/ - They are a great bunch of guys there, and will give you any advice you need via email (the links on the website)

I drive a LHD 348 and I always use the right hand mirror overtaking on the motorway for example.

Hope this helps If you need any more info, just email me.

Marc, I owned a 1986 Euro TR for 2 wonderful years. Bought the car with 35,000kms, sold it with 50,000kms. Had a complete major service shortly before I took delivery. Absolutely rock solid dependable the 2 years I drove it. Other than standard yearly fluid maintenance the TR required nothing. Mine was black/ tan. Beautifully styled road car. Perhaps the most competent high-speed car I have ever driven.
Mine was a single mirror TR. I prefer the original look and style. Here in the US the single mirror was not an issue.
My wife was quite upset when I sold the TR. When my current 348 spider arrived, she politely said, thats nice. Nowhere near the wow factor.

Marc, I budget about $ 1000.00 for routine service yearly on my 91 TR and usually don't spend all of this amount. My car has 38800 km and the last major service was done in April 1999 so the next major service will be done in the winter of 2004-2005 at a mileage estimated at 50000 km (30000 miles). I usually over service the car a bit- for example, at the last service Aug 2002, I had new rotors installed in the distributors just to prevent possible cap damage($$$$). I kept my car outside under a cover for one winter before my garage was built with no obvious problems but I did'nt like it. A TR must be driven frequently to prevent problems IMHO.
Adrian, a TR doesn't have power steering and it's really not needed as I never parallel park it.
Bruce, hello again Don.

Marc, I own two 512TRs so I know the cars. Will you be using it mostly for the road or for track days also. Are you looking for a TR, 512TR or 512M ?
A major service can easily set you back $8-10,000 US. SInce you already own a hire CO you must know how important it is to have a trustworhy mechanic look the car over for you. if the owner doesnt have service recordds or tools you should subtract that from his asking price.
I would not recommend leaving the car outside, especially over the winter

Wow Bruce, that's one FINE ride!!!
Have you heard about the diff being a problem with Testas? Does the Testa have power steering?

Mark, I might just take you up on that! Hope to be in London in September for an electronics show.

Adrian,

I live about 3 miles from Watford, in Radlett, Herts!

I work in London, on Haymarket (Picadilly Circus) - I can see Big Ben from my window as I type - it is a stunning city.

Let me know if you are ever in town..we can hook up for a beer.

Hi Bruce - Wow..not many yellow ones around! Yours looks stunning! Who said there wasn't money in pink battery operated bunnies!?!

I am interested in knowing what kind of cost you incur on normal servicing, and how reliable the Testarossa is, from an owner like yourself (i.e. not the dealer trying to sell the car!).

Also, I currently do not have a garage, so would be keeping the car on a driveway (under a weatherproof cover) - is this likely to effect the car in terms of wear and general maintenance costs?

One other thing - the car I am looking at is LHD and has only the left mirror..for U.K driving this will be too restrictive (coming on the the motorway from the left to right would be a little scary!), so I plan to have the right (high) mirror fitted - any advice?

Thanks in advance - any comments you have about the car's noise and driving experience (just to whet my appetite) would also be appreciated!

I bought a 246GT Dino about a month ago, then followed up with an 89 328 GTS recently. The Dino is a car I've coveted for years, and unless things go badly wrong is a keeper. The 328 is driven almost daily. Superb car and easy to drive. Still, I think I want a 348 Spider or a 12 cyl like a Testa or a Boxer. Just not sure if I am ready to handle the service payments. Good luck.

Where is UK are you? I have family in Essex, Watford and around London. Love the city to visit.

Thanks Adrian,

I will get the mag and have a read. I have come accross a couple of specialists who offer fixed price servicing, and the car is being offered with a warranty, but I won't know how extensive it is until Friday.

What Ferrari did you buy recently?

Hi Marc
I know how you are feeling as I recently became an owner. For more info on Testas, read the June copy of Classic Cars published in the UK. There's a good buyers guide. Also check the archives...lots of useful info.

I've been chatting with a knowledgeable mechanic who tells me that the main issues with TR ownership is potential cost of repair. Major service is engine out, so labour is high. Also, since the engine is out, it is prudent to change/rebuild things like hoses, water pump, tensioners, seals etc. Can get expensive quickly.

Perhaps the other big thing to note is apparently the differential can fail and the cost is VERY high. No easy way to check for that either!

On the plus side, you have a magnificent car, beautiful lines, a drive that will leave you wanting more, and at a price that is virtually a bargain.

I'd buy one. Come to think of it, I am looking for one!!!

Hi chaps,

I am new to the forum (from England), and have been a general car nut - Ferrari in particular - for, erm, ever.

Ridiculously excited about the prospect of purchasing my first personal Ferrari - I am test driving a Red Testarossa (1986 LHD) on Friday, and wondered if any of you have some good advice on what to look for, and what I can expect the car to cost me to run (servicing/consumption, etc). The car I am looking at has only 40,000k on the clock and apparently is in mint condition - it is from a dealer who imports from Europe in to the U.K - the car has apparently been in a humidified personal collectors museum(!) for the last 13 years, but has been correctly serviced and maintained.

I do own a small prestige car hire company - www.carmania.co.uk and hopefully will build up the fleet of Ferrari's in time - alas at the moment the ones we can offer are through link ups with other hire companies in the U.K.

The Testarossa is for my own use - not as a hire car. At the moment I do not have a garage at home - is is a bad idea to keep this vehicle on a drive?

Thanks for your help - I have had a great time reading the recent postings & hope to be able to add something of interest soon!

What-ho from sunny England,

Hedge (Marc)
