Hey Vincent- the Audi Quatro rally cars were/are AWD (dirt is a different story, Audi started a revolution there!) AWD has it's uses, I shouldn't be so quick to denounce it. Certinly the various Audi AWD road cars are awesome for incliment weather (eg an Allroad makes a near perfect ski-ing mobile!)

I just don't think it's *the thing* to do for sports cars. (mostly adds un-needed weight there IMO.)

The current Audi A8 LeMans cars are RWD only. (and run a twin turbo V8 and kick serious butt!) The modular design is amazing, something like 10minuites to change out an entire transmission/suspension/rear-clip assembley

Best!
Ben.

Nope, the Audi R8C LM-GTP is RWD (according to info on the web).

I doubt it, Ferrari still uses belts largely to save weight.

My personal opinion:

AWD adds a quick 300+ lbs to any car. Frankly, modern tyre technology can cope with 700+hp fairly easially, if the driver has any buisness being in said car in the first place :-)

"Do you folks think that Ferrari will put 4WD in future production models, considering its competition (Murcie & Gallardo) uses it?"

The Lambos use it because they can't get their power to the pavement through only two tires without turning into smoke factories.

In the purist sense, Ferraris exist to support racing. And most racing venues don't permit AWD (except the off road ones).

I wouldn't mind seeing an nice little Maserati AWD coupe, but they wouldn't build it small enough to compete in WRC, and probably couldn't build it cheap enough to compete in the market against the X-type or AWD Volvo or BMW Xi.

I think they should.

Hi, OK Ferrari made the 2 prototype 408s, they were both 4wd. That front shot of the race car is indeed a 312 the "Spazzeneuve" (sp)? Not a 4wd car.

Jim,

To me it looks like he already gave up there.

Just being close to it and maybe touching it is good enough. :-)

Cheers

This is the car I think that I was refering to:

Upload

312 B3 Snowplough s/n 009 (picture from Barchetta ... )

But it does not look like it is actually 4wd.

A little bit knowledge is a dangerous thing...

I believe that Ferrari commisioned an English designer to design a F1 car that possibly was 4wd. It was a very ugly car but was Ferraris first true monocoque ... it never race I believe.

Wayne might be able to confirm chassis numbers and whether it was 4wd ... actually I could search the Barchetta site I guess.

Chris and THK, the 408 wasn't a one-off. More like a "two-and-a-half-off."

Thanks Chris!

I knew there was no production car. I was wondering about the racers or on offs.

Only 1? Why did they abandon the idea? I'm guessing that it must've cost a pretty penny to conceptualize and build. Was it the purists or other reasons?

2 ways to answer this, yes, Ferrari has built an all wheel drive vehicle, no, it was not a production car in fact it was a one off chassis. It is in the Ferrari Galleria in Marenello.

4, 6, 8, 10, 12 cyl cars. They've also done forced induction. Front engine, mid engine.

How about 4wd?

Cheers
