My top is the original vinyl that the factory provided with the 1980 car.

Lots of great information being shared here. I appreciate everyone's help with the targa cover. I think I will keep my eyes open for one to come up for sale. I'm in no hurry, I would just like to complete the car. If I never find one, I'll make one.

Thanks for the information. It's great to have a place like this to share this kind of information! I don't think I would have found out about the Carbrella otherwise. I'd be interested in seeing a picture of the Carbrella to add to my ideas, if you could post it. I think I would still like something I could drive with because if I go on a short trip for a few days, I don't want to be without some way of driving if it rains.

Just bought a Carberella folding top.
$149 including shipping.(303)922-4774.
Great for sun and rain protection but can't drive with it on. Installs in about 15 seconds.

CraigFL, there was (or still is?) a company called: Carbrella Motoring Accessories from Lakewood Colorado that sold a temporary top that folded in three. It could be used on a variety of targa-top cars. Who knows if they're still in business, but they used to advertise alot in R&T and C&D.

My project in the upcoming months is to build a top that will protect the interior from the rain yet I will be able to store it in the trunk. I don't expect to have something that is perfect for all driving conditions but something that will keep the rain out during normal driving situations. I have several ideas in my head right now but am not sure which will be the best. I feel I need something to protect the car yet I want to be able to drive without the top.

While on the topic of targa tops.....what are other people doing when they can't fit their targa top behind the seats. The guy who had the car before me put in a great sound system. (Unfortunatley he enclosed everything with a wood box behind the seats. Exterior carpeted of course)

Any good upholstery shop can duplicate the original. Just borrow someones cover and take it to the shop and you can have it made from leather, vinyl or anything you want. I bought some of the fasteners at the Charlotte N.C. car show that match the originals for $5.00 each.

Mine fits very nicely and latches good both at the top and bottom. It would offer good protection if only I could use it-- I'm so tall that I need the seat all the way back, which means no room for the top onboard. You definately don't want seat marks worn into your top because that will be more than the $450 for the cover -- Don't forget the seat back will be flexing even though it may not touch at rest.

The orignal was vinyl and only in black, the $259 is a reproduction, the orignal is also listed at the same site only $450 (again without fasteners).

I just loosely place mine over the roof when I go topless. I don't think it's that noticable either way. One of my fastners doesn't lock that well. I defintely wouldn't worry about it for that much money.

Thanks for the tip Carlos - I will check ebay. Is your cover vinyl or leather? Either way $150 sounds much better than $400+

Thanks for the info!

Ouch! $400 for a vinyl replacement? Am I correct that the originals were leather? Did they come only in black, or other colors as well? Because I enjoy pain, any ideas on a source/cost of a leather replacement?

Just out of curiosity, do many of you actually use the cover? Or do you not bother and just put the top back there loose? How important is it from a functional standpoint?

If you have the time, try searching for one on Ebay. I got an almost brand new one for $150 from Forza Motors.

You will also need the fasteners since they are not included, 4 of them at $34.75 each (wow), they are on same page just below the cover.

An orginal one might be expensive, the best thing may be just getting the correct size leather cover and adding the snaps.

I am missing this from my car. Can anyone help me find a source to acquire one? Do I have to order one from Ferrari? Anyone else ever bought one of these and know what it costs? Thanks!
